Squad management with two objectives

174

We seldom see squad management in action just as starkly as the have over the last week.  Brendan Rodgers rested players in each of our last two games.  We banked six points and the manager will consider it a productive exercise.  David Turnbull opened the scoring in both games, James Forrest, Luis Palma and Oh all scored, while Kyogo and Cameron Carter-Vickers each missed out on a starting line-up.

Odin Holm came back into the team, Tony Ralston returned to the scene in Dingwall, while Yang made an impactful appearance on the bench against St Mirren, rewarded with a starting place at Ross County.  The only two outfield players who were not rested for a minute were Liam Scales and Greg Taylor, an indication of their importance to the team during this period.

Oh desperately needed gametime and a goal, he scored a second across the two games, but the effort was ruled out by a ridiculous VAR decision.  If we were not ahead and so much better than the rest, the VAR situation would be a real worry.

Brendan’s primary objective would be to keep as much energy in the legs as possible ahead of tomorrow’s game in Madrid, where Atletico have the advantage of playing their most recent game on Friday, two days before Celtic were in action.

The secondary objective could be even more important to the season.  Oh, Holm, Paulo Bernardo, Yang and others all need to develop as Celtic players.  We will need to lean on them to get the job done.

“There is enough evidence for the club to publicly call it out.”

There are enough instances that require clarification which I think we do query case by case. Evidence I am not convinced of. Evidence of what? Mistakes / process failure as per Jota/Abada offsides? Or cheating? Short of the same ref/VAR operator having two very similar incidents (think shirt pull Sevco/Hearts RC/Us) and behaving differently consistently in favour or one club / to the detriment of another I think it takes a while to build a pattern.

“The level of cheating is now plain for all to see and the fact that we say nothing on;ly gives them scope to continue with it.”

Not sure it is a fact that we say nothing; though if you meant say nothing PUBLICLY then fair enough, but again I can see why they choose not to as it would only strengthen resolve against us whilst the SFA have no interest in reforming this area.

  2. Happy Birthday Celtic, good article Paul. We all saw how Arsenal reacted to a terrible VAR call, that’s what we should be doing. Not taking it like a bunch of mugs

  3. The Celtic board will do nothing with regard to the deliberate governing of VAR. In fact I’d go as far as to say they are complicit. It keeps Rangers relevant. We can’t have Celtic being refereed fairly, we’d walk the league and win both knockout cups year on year. Not attractive to tv audiences at all.

Nope, nothing will be said or done. Bad for business

What I do know is that Dr John was silenced.

I also know that our chairman is a bare faced liar.

  5. In any incident involving Celtic, VAR will always look to disadvantage us. Whereas, in any game involving them, it’s always to their advantage

  6. is the arsen wenger faouring the attacker for offside being trialled somewhere ?

none of the offisde calls given against us are in the attackers favour, never,

That would need a process, a procedure, a legal format.

  11. Glasgow council Safety Advisory Group respond to Celtic decision to suspend Green Brigade supporters

Celtic cited safety concerns as they suspended a supporters group from home matches.

Celtic addressed the Green Brigade supporters goup last week as the club explained the rationale behind suspending the season tickets of around 260 fans who attend matches in the Rail Seating Section of Celtic Park.

Celtic detailed illegal access to Celtic Park, the use of pyrotechnics, unsafe behaviour and the display of “a number of banners and flags used by the Green Brigade which relate to or are connected with terrorist organisations involved in the conflict in the Middle East.” You can read the list of events that are now being investigated here.

The detailed and lengthy statement went on to say that the club was required to submit a report to the Safety Advisory Group of Glasgow City Council, following every home game in an attempt to address the SAG’s “concerns regarding the conduct of certain spectators located within the north-east curve area”, quoting the council body.

In relation to the council’s position on the conduct of fans within the stadium, a spokesman for the council said: “The Safety Advisory Group for Celtic Park is solely concerned with the physical condition of the stadium and the safe management of spectators.

“As a member of the Safety Advisory Group for Celtic Park, we have been aware of long-standing safety management issues in the area of stadium used for rail seating.

“Along with other members of the safety advisory group, we have continued to provide the club with advice on how they can fulfil their obligation to ensure safety within their own stadium.

“How tickets are allocated and the content of fan displays are not matters considered by the Safety Advisory Group.”

Following the announcement of the sanctions against the fans, a report in The Herald stated there had been an emergency meeting of the Safety Advisory Group in relation to council action, with the suggestion that stands could be closed by the council.

Councillor Ruairi Kelly who represents the Glasgow North East ward contacted police and council officials. He told GlasgowWorld: “I have been assured that there have been no investigations or proposed sanctions by Glasgow City Council and there have been no specific issues raised by Glasgow City Council with regards to the rail seating area.”

Leader of Glasgow City Council Susan Aitken’s office was asked about Celtic Football Club’s investigation into fan behaviour in the rail seating area of the stadium and whether there are any current monitoring or intervention measures being considered by the council. A spokesman said: “I’m not clear what the leader’s involvement would be. This is a matter for the club.”

Police Scotland referred enquires about illegal entry to the stadium on 4 October – included in the Celtic charge sheet against the Green Brigade – and display of “a number of banners” related to terrorist organisations back to the club. A police spokesman said: “If the club confirms that details of banners have been passed to police, then pass me the dates of the game and the location and we will speak to officers and come back to you.”

On 1 November Celtic were asked to confirm whether details of banners and incidents of illegal entry to Celtic Park have been provided to police. The club have not responded.

  12. Irrespective of our specific opinions it appears to me that all posts on here reflect that the SPL is no more genuine than WWE wrestling. There is never a shortage of gullible people anywhere which I assume is why this continues. I have to say that I find the whole thing a bit of a waste of time. Sad really, but it also answers the question about the very small league size. The whole thing is easier to control. No need for any replies from Celtic employees.

  13. On this issue of sevco supporting referees and officials openly and brazenly cheating to help their team, we are on our own. The other ten teams in the league know decisions will go against them when they play sevco. Their compensation is they know when they play celtic the decisions will go in their favour. This is how things even themselves out in Scottish football.

  14. And there you have it , a Celtic statement condemning some supporters is denied by groups who are no friends of Celtic supporters …

It’s time the board wised up , some wagon circling is in order …

  15. If the VAR officials are cheating us so that The Darnel can win the league.

Then why did they chalk off the Darnel goal against us at Ayebrokes?

A 6 point swing in the match and a highly contentious decision went our way.

Celtic need to write asking for clarification on DAllas decisions every time it happens. A case will easily build and he will need to be removed as he consistently fails ( involving us and the team he supports). Others will deploy the same tactics.

The ultras group issued a statement saying that fans who are part of their group had been left out of pocket despite the club imposing sanctions following what the club said was unacceptable behaviour. They said members had spent hundreds of pounds for the Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid in Spain on Tuesday night.”

IF Celtic said ” NO ONE has lost money for tickets ” Then WHY have Celtic issued a statement this afternoon advising Banned Supporters that they WILL be REIMBURSED” ?

This STINKS. Why promise to REIMBURSE Fans….IF NO Money was taken from fans accounts ?

I accept that Celtic apparently have NOT taken money from fans accounts for the game in Madrid tomorrow night, due to Celtic NOT issuing any tickets for this particular game.

Celtic appear to be digging a hole for themselves over this issue ( and OTHER Issues)

  25. Just after reading on CQN that Newco got four penalties in the past week…………can this actually be a fact? Despite our chalked off goals last Saturday and with the sending off, the game turned out to be a routine three points for the Hoops. But nevertheless it took some terrific scores to finally crack the packed defence of our opponents.

Young Turnbull has football skills to burn and another fabulous long range strike from him. Luis Palma as I’ve said previously has this penchant for scoring spectacular goals and he did not disappoint. Since when is a professional sportsman over the hill at 31 years of age, glad to see Brendan doesn’t think James Forrest is in that category. A great man to have on the bench. Brendan seems a lot more relaxed in his recent press conferences now that he has settled back in his role at Celtic and the past has finally been binned.

After Saturday it’s a return to Senior Hurling with the Champions League trip to Madrid tomorrow night with all the regulars returning after being rested at the weekend. Let’ss hope Liam can dink some of those beautiful passes over the Athletico defenders for our attackers just as he did on Saturday. Once again hope for a good performance from the Hoops and a welcome result.

  26. From “If there is any club in world football that will benefit from the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, it is Celtic” to “If we were not ahead and so much better than the rest, the VAR situation would be a real worry.”.

Where did it all go wrong?

We’ve watched this movie enough times to know no one within Scotland will ever change the indoctrinated behaviour of the SFA and their officials, you might get them to behave for a week or two while the noise dies down but they’ll always gradually revert to form. Scrutiny must therefore be external, of appropriate importance, and recurring.

It would be entirely reasonable for a club like Celtic to ask for an independent review of VAR undertaken by a footballing authority who has extensive experience of the implementation and monitoring of VAR across multiple associations. Such review to assess the operation of VAR across its first year in Scotland, illustrate what has worked and what hasn’t, where decision processes could be improved etc. with a view to implementing the proposed changes. This could be maintained as an annual “temperature check” on the operation of VAR for ongoing/continuous improvement. I’d suggest the perfect organisation to undertake such a review would be UEFA, for the benefit of all Scottish football.
