Squad management with two objectives

174

We seldom see squad management in action just as starkly as the have over the last week.  Brendan Rodgers rested players in each of our last two games.  We banked six points and the manager will consider it a productive exercise.  David Turnbull opened the scoring in both games, James Forrest, Luis Palma and Oh all scored, while Kyogo and Cameron Carter-Vickers each missed out on a starting line-up.

Odin Holm came back into the team, Tony Ralston returned to the scene in Dingwall, while Yang made an impactful appearance on the bench against St Mirren, rewarded with a starting place at Ross County.  The only two outfield players who were not rested for a minute were Liam Scales and Greg Taylor, an indication of their importance to the team during this period.

Oh desperately needed gametime and a goal, he scored a second across the two games, but the effort was ruled out by a ridiculous VAR decision.  If we were not ahead and so much better than the rest, the VAR situation would be a real worry.

Brendan’s primary objective would be to keep as much energy in the legs as possible ahead of tomorrow’s game in Madrid, where Atletico have the advantage of playing their most recent game on Friday, two days before Celtic were in action.

The secondary objective could be even more important to the season.  Oh, Holm, Paulo Bernardo, Yang and others all need to develop as Celtic players.  We will need to lean on them to get the job done.

  1. Tom McLaughlin on

All these valid claims about cheating refs disallowing good Celtic goals and ignoring blatant Celtic penalty claims are greatly demeaned when supporters accuse referees of being livid when Celtic score. That is just rampant paranoia and provides our detractors with the ammunition to shoot down our genuine complaints.

  2. But they are livid

In contrast to when the huns score

And it is the contrast that’s important……

  3. If we were not ahead and so much better than the rest, the VAR situation would be a real worry.

dearie dearie , not a good comment , we have to batter it into them at all levels that we will not except VAR under its current regime , you only have too see the enjoyment on the face of the 4th official on Sunday to see what we are up against.

    At 2-1 Song missed a good chance…….

Next 10 mins it was 4-1

He won that game in the minds of the spurs fans

  5. Am I happy that “Anges Spurs” have been pumped tonight?……..yes.

Am I grateful for what he done for us?…..oh yes.

Am I still hurting from his tub thumping, heart pumping crap he displayed with zero feeling for our club whatsoever after every game until “A Premiership Club came calling? YES. Big time.

Will the Spurs fans feel the same way I do when Man Yoo come calling when they’ve had enough of Ten Hag?

    Yes yes and yes again

Ange has no connection with ANY CLUB OR FANBASE WHATSOEVER.

Ange is in it for Ange. Good luck to him but he’s no hero of mine.

VAR started incredibly badly, it peaked at disasterous and since then it’s been downhill all the way.

  7. Hello again all you young rebels.

  8. Ange: “If we go down to 5 players, mate, we’ll still have a crack”.

I don’t agree but find it funny.

  9. Going back to the game…..I’ve said it already…Romero thinks he’s a better player than he is…I like his aggression, but, he’s NOT an Ange type player. He makes a successful tackle then makes a pass…..THEN….he STROLLS around as if saying “Look at me everybody, how good am I?”

Ange wants the tackle and pass then MOVE for the possible return. That’s not Romero

  10. I’d love to see us go 3-5-2 swapping to 5-4-1 when required tomorrow night. Even if only for the 1st half…

  11. The big difference between us fans and the employees of the club…

For us it’s a par of our identity and life. For them it’s a career, job and income opportunity.

I know they’re entitled to max their skills out and get the highest recompense (our fave players can easy leave as Ange did). So I get it.

Actually lot of respect for Brendan coming back; I’m sure he coulda got mad money in most Euro and Asian leagues but he came back up the road.

Anyways, Ange is in my rear view. And I think Man U are just as likely to look at BR as they are AP. Jus sayin.

Here’s hoping for a memorably great Madrid result.

    Good points…

Regards Brendan…..for Man Yoo he’d definitely steady the ship… but Man Yoo history demands instant success….and much like Celtic….want to play in a cavalier fashion….in this instance I think Ange is the better bet..

    Agree with you and 31003

Still miss the bhoys and Ange getting a nightly

Moderator sounds like you have had a tough night. Take care. My girls struggled with covid lockdown, we take our freedom for granted, labour just got kicked out in New Zealand because of lockdown, they didn’t see the death here, my Dad died in Scotland, they can’t connect the lockdown with saved lives in NZ. That and they didn’t like labour giving Maori a voice, Te Reo, co-governance they called it. The majority revolted. Have a good weekend, no flags just a Celtic win and chill.
