Squad management with two objectives

174

We seldom see squad management in action just as starkly as the have over the last week.  Brendan Rodgers rested players in each of our last two games.  We banked six points and the manager will consider it a productive exercise.  David Turnbull opened the scoring in both games, James Forrest, Luis Palma and Oh all scored, while Kyogo and Cameron Carter-Vickers each missed out on a starting line-up.

Odin Holm came back into the team, Tony Ralston returned to the scene in Dingwall, while Yang made an impactful appearance on the bench against St Mirren, rewarded with a starting place at Ross County.  The only two outfield players who were not rested for a minute were Liam Scales and Greg Taylor, an indication of their importance to the team during this period.

Oh desperately needed gametime and a goal, he scored a second across the two games, but the effort was ruled out by a ridiculous VAR decision.  If we were not ahead and so much better than the rest, the VAR situation would be a real worry.

Brendan’s primary objective would be to keep as much energy in the legs as possible ahead of tomorrow’s game in Madrid, where Atletico have the advantage of playing their most recent game on Friday, two days before Celtic were in action.

The secondary objective could be even more important to the season.  Oh, Holm, Paulo Bernardo, Yang and others all need to develop as Celtic players.  We will need to lean on them to get the job done.

G’Day Mick enjoy your football/horses and 2moro morning enjoy Celtic beating athletico. (no capital A from me)

If you were on the ran dan with Tony Scapatichi you were probably drinking in Montrose and not Arbroath.

Scapa’s been a mate for over 30 years and now spends most of his time in the Alicante region of Spain but still has a place on Montrose

Looks like we have been preparing and protecting out First XI for the game this evening.

    Big ask!!

Still, we have given ourselves the best chance possible of going to Madrid, the famous Celtic Glasgow and given an account of ourselves.

  4. The rules of football may not have changed too much, but interpretation certainly has.

Enjoyed the Spurs game last night, but VAR was the main focus and memory.

It was difficult enough to comprehend on TV with numerous replays, slow motion and panel debate.

If you attended the game it eas mushroom syndrome.

The match attending fans are being shortchanged with VAR..

    Anyway, COYBIG.

  5. Good matchday morning bhoys (oh I can here Mrs David66 woth blender in kitchen making my kael and spinnach shake) yuch. She says its good for me, ffs.

  7. Unless I heard wrong Ange Postecoglu, (who got some flack on here last night from Snowflake Central) called twice for VAR to be scrapped after last night’s match with Chelsea. And return to a system where the on field officials make the decisions. Now, I know that in Scotland special conditions prevail, where the vast majority of our top level referees are part of the Craft, but I doubt if that is also the case South of the Border. That said Celtic FC are currently paying the most for the privilege of being refereed twice or more by the same members of the brotherhood. Cui Bono? Not us. We should follow Ange’s lead, call for the scrapping of VAR, or, failing which, tell the SPL, and the SFA, you want to use it you pay for it. Include us out.

  8. Could not agree mor Celtic Mac. Over refereeing especially with Rangers Assisted Video will ruin the game. The same happened with the Rugby World Cup final. It was a game of referees with an incidental sports game. NZ woman team scored a spectacular equaliser that was ruled offside by mm. Ruining the game. VAR is destroying football as a spectator sport.

  10. We will need grafters in our team tonight in our midfield.Calmac and O Riley, starters,if hopefully we play four there, choose between,Bernardo,Holm,Iwata,to make up the middle.Griezman is their genius. He must be marked.Las Palma’s did it at the weekend, and he got hooked. The striker in brilliant form, same.Big job for our two CHs.They are not unplayable, but 100% work from everyone needed.

All we can really ask for, then its in the hands of the Gods.

Holm in MF ,Palma on the bench….

    ___________________________________________________________

If true no diving into tackles Holm as these Athletico players treat all contact as being mortally wounded!

  12. Bernardo has got a fair bit of 1st team experience,at a good level.39 games in Portugal,26 of these for Benfica, and over 60 caps up to under 23 level.Maybe this boy just needs a run of games to show us what we have.

  13. An Tearmann

Those that seem unable to accept that Ange has left Celtic and is now the Spurs manager. And feel a need to insult and attack him for so doing rather than appreciate what he brought and what he did for us. And us for him. Do not know offhand how they felt when he was appointed only how they feel now that he has moved on.

Time some on here did likewise.

  14. We have never won in Spain , scary statistic !

Traditionally , it’s the second round of fixtures where the opposition have learned how to play against us and come out tops in the return leg.

For me our best chance is complacently from AM , we can’t invite them onto us as our back line is not good enough to keep a clean sheet.

AM weaklink looked like their left back when confronted with Luis , also the Belgian lad at centre half looked like he had a mistake in him but got away with it.

Brendan will need to tweak the tactics , one option is to go narrow in the midfield with Callum and Iwata in front of the centre halves , with Matt feeding Kyogoal , out of possession we’ll line up 4-4-1-1

    All fingers crossed

  15. Ange’s post match interview where he was questioned about their high line despite being a man and two men down reminded me why I’m very happy we’ve got BR. Chelsea were not very good last night and a point was definitely there for Spurs with ten men had the game been managed differently.

Great entertainment and he’s done well there so far but at the very top level, managers need to be able to manage a game as it develops and adjust accordingly.

  16. MCPHAIL BHOY- it’s just my preferred formation, I think we need to be more pragmatic, and set up a bit more defensively against most European teams IMO

  17. onenightinlisbon on

Totally agree with comments about Spurs tactics when down to ten men last night. Loved Ange but his refusal to adapt cost his team the points.
