Squad vandalism visible in Korean players

245

Yang’s call up to the South Korea national team squad is recognition of his current form.  The player arrived in Glasgow as a raw 20-year-old in 2023, shortly after compatriot Oh (then aged 21) became a Celtic player.  A week later, Kwon (then 22) made it three came in from Korea that year.

Kwon never played a minute for Celtic.  He was left to wither on the vine for two years, with short loan spells at St Mirren and Hibs, before Nantes took him to Ligue 1 last summer.  He moved to Germany in the winter transfer window and is now a regular in Bundesliga 2 for Karlsruher.  Kwon (25) is a 6’ 4” No. 6 who was brought in to shadow Callum McGregor.  He joins Yang in the Korea squad this month, and had the profile of recruit we were looking for in 2023.  If we’d developed him correctly, he would own the No. 6 role in Callum’s absence.

Oh left Celtic for Genk for £2m in 2024 and has not looked back.  A medical denied him a €20m move to Stuttgart a year later, but Besiktas paid €14m for him in January.  At 24-years-old, he is a hot talent who is now miles out of our reach.  He makes it three players Celtic signed in 2023 who are in the South Korea squad this month.  The Koreans rank 22 in the world; Scotland are 38th.

Others who arrived in 2023 were Tomoki Iwata, who starts every week for Birmingham while Kyogo watches from the bench.  Gus Lagerbiekle (25), who is ripping it up for Braga in Portugal.  Maik Nawrocki (25) came in that summer and is currently on loan at Hannover – he scored against Schalke on Sunday.  Hannover will exercise their option to buy if they gain promotion from Bundesliga 2.

Luis Palma got 18 months and more game time than the others before being shipped out.  He is a big favourite at Lech Poznan, where he is on loan.  Marco Tilio is a player who signed that summer, picked up an injury almost immediately and was then ignored.  He rescued  his career with a move to Rapid Vienna last summer after a productive loan spell back in Australia.

Alastair Johnston joined from Montreal in January 2023 and despite an injury-hampered season he has been a standout at right back.  Illness denied Odin Holm an early chance and he has made little impact since.  He is the only permanent signing made in 2023 who has not kicked on in the game.

It is almost vandalism that talent like Oh, Kwon, Lagerbielke, Narwocki and others, recruited in one calendar year, were left to wither on the vine at Celtic, only to prove their worth elsewhere.  Why did Honda Civic Man take the job if he didn’t want to do the work?  No wonder the squad has a hollowed out feel to it.

“I am also enjoying playing for the manager. It’s a very big honour for me to play under Martin O’Neill.

“It’s been an extraordinary experience in my life. He’s a very friendly person, he tries to communicate a lot with the players.

“He reached out to me when he first came in and that boosted my confidence and I have felt that in my performances.”

I wonder how he felt about Celtic after we almost sold him in the Summer for no apparent reason

He’s quick, strong, good in the air and has a great shot on him, and importantly he’s prepared to defend and to learn how to do it better. 23 years old, more settled and a series of starts, his football intelligence seems to be getting better.

Its not easy developing young players from totally different cultures and it wont work every time for a number of reasons one of them being lack of talent, but we 100% need to do it.

B78 – I always find it ironic how you often cite Brugge as a club to benchmark Celtic against for it was they who effectively rumbled the myth of Rodgers being an “elite manager”.

If memory serves they were the first team to man mark Callum McGregor and deploy a mid-press. These tactics were then copied by many other teams and from then on (November 2024) a deflected o.g. against Young Boys In January 2025 and a 2-1 victory against Strum Graz in late October 2025 would be the only big games of football Celtic would win during 90 minutes of play. Unfortunately for Rodgers, the latter was followed by a 3-1 defeat to Hertz after which he was shown the door.

So the manager was 100% responsible for choosing/assessing all the players purchased under his tenure?

  11. Play Yang properly and he’ll score goals.

Look how these players mentioned in Paul 67’s article have come onto a game when managed properly and not cliqued out!.

Its not Paul 67’s, or Lawwel’s fault that Celtic majority of the supporter base are not cute enough to see through Brendan Rodgers.

The same fans could not see through the SNP for 17 years.

And they still can’t see through Sir Rod the fraud Royal Family Shill.

Or, Sir/Lord Wullie Haughey who kissed Fergus’s ass AFTER Fergus had lied to and intended to shaft the Celtic supporters who bought many shares, rather than walk out the front door with, BRIAN DEMPSEY!

    Who’s fault is that?

Celtic players must be dreading who the PLC full of Tories will bring in next as manager.

I don’t read CQN that often now, but yet again Mine Host failed to surprise me.When I read today’s eulogy, the first thing that came to mind was “They don’t like us Tims” or in this case “P67 doesn’t like that Brendan much”.

When P67 thinks of the ‘not missed one bit’ Peter Big Peter does he burst out into the old hymn “Mine eyes have seen the coming of the glory of the Lord”? Even faithful CQNrs can see PL had an agenda.

Brendan Rodgers was in charge of the football department, not Peter Lawwell.

Why did BR sit like a nodding dog at the AGM agreeing with and thanking the board for their efforts during the Transfer Window, and then when a certain player does not measure up, BR starts whispering that it was not BR who bought the dud player, it was the club!

Why was BR not sacked for that behavior?

As I understand it University students down in Kent (or anyone in that age group in that area) would have missed out on being vaccinated against MenB as infants back before 2010. One in 10 of any age will have side effects from the BexSero vaccine, and one in 100 may have more serious side effects, high temps/seizures etc. Risk, as with many vaccines, also of allergic reactions or worse. Given that MenB is a bacterial form of the illness, might be better to opt for the antibiotics that are being made available, though the Govt. has just announced that the NHS will offer “targeted vaccinations” to at risk groups. The former will act quicker than the latter……

  22. When Brendan Rodgers became Celtic manager in 2016, we had £3.6 million in the bank and had completed 3 domestic trebles in our history.

He left this year bringing an end to his second stint which sees the Club sitting on £80 million and now on 8 domestic trebles.

We’ve some very sad and bitter little men in our support – not in any way reflective of the wider support in my experience. History will judge Brendan kindly.

Call your Rodgers and raise two Lawwells.

Burnley78 … players Brendan developed and sold for big profits.

Not too many but one stand out per tenure.

    Moussa – £500k became €20m

Kuhn – £3m became whatever (I’ve forgotten but it was lots).

Brendan did a good job second time round getting decent, not spectacular, money for a few ordinary Joe’s incl. Mikey and Bosun.

In other circumstances they could have drifted away as free transfers or sold for pittance just to clear them out.

I believe the perception of them being exposed to elite coaching put a few quid on their tags.
