St Johnstone 0-2 Celtic

609

Celtic were always in control against St Johnstone in Perth this afternoon and deservedly picked up the three points although it took them almost an hour to open the scoring.  Gary Hooper knocked in a loose ball on 59 minutes before Ki Sung-Yeung finished off a sweeping Celtic brea five minutes later.

St Johnstone kept things tight early on and kept Celtic from creating a chance before Georgios Samaras created space for a shot which was saved well by Enckelman.  Celtic’s best move of the first half came after 31 minutes when Ki, Forrest and Brown combined to release Hooper.  The striker shot low and on target but Enckelman pulled off a remarkable save.

Both teams picked up the pace after half time but it was Mackay who created the first chance of the second period, forcing a save from Fraser Forster.  Cha DuRi twice crossed dangerously.  Firstly for Hooper, whose hooked effort from 4 yards was turned over by the impressive Enckelman.   James Forrest then turned a snatched chance over from Cha’s next effort.

Just before the hour Charlie Mulgrew dropped a corner into the six yard box which Victor Wanyama contested.  The ball dropped between a sea of St Johnstone legs but Hooper was onto it in a flash and prodded over.

The game was put beyond the home team five minutes later.  St Johnstone were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Celtic penalty area after Mulgrew was penalised for climbing.  The Celtic was stood strong and from the subsequence block James Forrest drove forward at pace.  Samaras returned a 1-2 to Forrest to drew Enckelman before squaring for the unmarked Ki.  The Saints’ keeper did well but could not prevent Ki’s shot from crossing the line.

Samaras mishit a shot after the impressive Cha again crossed to effect before the Greek striker ran 40 yards and had his shot blocked.

St Johnstone’s only real chance fo the game came when Wanyama slipped to let Haber close in on Forster but the keeper was equal to the shot.

  1. The Honest Mistake on

This game is not going to go the full 90 minutes.

An evening kick off during the Christmas holidays, everybody drinking all day, Celtic fans feel that they are being prosecuted by the media, police and government. A lack of action against fraud, cheating, racism and sectarianism from rangers. rangers start singing their sectarian and racist songs.

Step up Willie Gollum to push everybody over the edge.

This has been scripted, a perfect storm that we have no way of avoiding.

‘I can live with the mild embarrassment of an ill-considered banner. UEFA might find it uncomfortable being both victim and judge of the incident, but I’m sure they’ll get over it.

Setting off flares/fireworks in a football stadium recklessly disregards the safety of others.’

There must be hundreds of flares/smoke bombs let off at games every week across Europe. If they really are as dangerous as you and others say I’m sure we would have heard about people being injured, burned, gassed or whatever.

The guys who let them off do so amongst themselves. They don’t throw them at the unsuspecting. They aren’t weapons.

He wasnt off – but I think the ball was played backwards by a St Johnstone player anyway .

The ref and the linesman had a clear veiw.

Some over the other decisions I was raging about at the time turned out to be ok when calmly watched on tv.

  5. Rangers players are welcoming the milder weather expected this week as this will allow the ground to soften at Murray Park just in time for a doubling up of diving practice .

When is D Day? I am asked this with increasing frequency in our CSC, usually articulated as: “I thought you said the huns were going to be bust by now …”, as if it was my fault they’re not, as if I was single-handedly keeping them going.

Anyway, you say by this time next year at the latest. I honestly do not think there is any chance they will last that long.

The MBB could pull the plug any day. Absolutely any day. Including today. The Abbot of Clonmacnois has mentioned to me a couple of times an aspect that doesn’t even get much of an airing on RTC. Can you imagine the discussions between the MBB and his fellow conspirators, Andrew Ellis and whoever? Dear God. I bet UEFA wouldn’t fancy that kind of language on a banner. Whoever it is who is coming up with the money or coming up with the emergency cash-raising wheezes must be getting very, very fed up.

The MBB has two choices: pull the plug and take the flak OR wait for the FTT and for Murray to get the flak, but keep putting his hand in his pocket until the FTT concludes. I bet he’s changed his mind and changed it back dozens of times. A real dilemma.

Either way, if the FTT fails to finish when it re-re-convenes in mid-January, it is just possible they could make it to the end of this season, if the MBB keeps coughing up and if he manages to sell some of his best players in the window. But these are all pretty big ‘ifs’. Plus, the call from HMRC, whispering in his shell-like “No more Mr Nice Guy”, would likely be precipitated by any further delay.

The delaying tactics have come from Murray’s QC. Murray’s preferred outcome would surely be for the MBB to cop all the flak. He may even be hoping that the FTT doesn’t get to make a final call on the EBT scandal, or at least on the part of it that pertains to Rangers. Respected opinion is that HMRC will press for the legal ruling in any event, pour encourager les autres.

    We live in amazing times.

  8. I rarely post as I find that others have more eloquently expressed any feelings that I want to convey. The recent events however and the way that it seems to have tarnished Celtic have caused me to break with long stance on posting.

I am really struggly to understand the rational of the people that are defending the barner and the smoke bomb.

YES individuals or groups have a right to express their opinion of UEFA …but they should do it, if they wish, in their own time and space and not drag Celtic into it. They were not expressing any sensitiment on behalf of the footbal club. [Eg. You have aright to express you contempt of my neighbough who you do not like…but if I invite you and you agree to accompany me to his home, then you should have the good sense to bite your tongue knowing that you are my guest amd any offence you cause their will be atributed to me. When you next meet him in the streets out of my, company then you can have a square go etc without it impinging on me].

If these people wish to go and expess any sentiments for or against UEFA they should do so in their own time and not when travelling and watching a game on the auspecies of Celtic Footbal club, who sold them the tickets purely to go and watch a game and not to provide a platform for demonstration.

As for setting off a smoke bomb .. someone here justified that as not being important because it was in a half empty staduim…..beggars belief ??… I suppose that their should be a law that says smoke bombs permited if the stadium is less than 25%, 50% , 75% full. If there had been an emergency that needed the stadium to be evacuated during the game … the smoke bomb would have helped to ensure that all were safely evacuated?

From being the best behaved supporters in the world with recognition from both FIFA and UEFA, within a few short years Celtic has become a brand that is now associated with negative sentiments in Europe.

All this because of a few lunatics .. that somehow tries to defend the indefenceable. We were fined because of a few weekend “I am a nerd” singing some songs which we all know will get us into trouble. Instead all accepting it and moving on to get our house in order and limit the damage, a few idiots thinks that they are acting for the fans or club and throws their dummy out of the pram. What I am not quite sure about is what the dummy spitting at UEFA is trying to say: Were they trying to say that Celtic moral compase is so base that we can’t really see anything wrong with singing a song that may offend a section of the population. Or that we recognise that it is wrong, but as others clubs are also singing offensive songs we just thought we might as well sink to their level… maybe I am a romantic but I always thought that Celtic is much more than a club, we are the good guys, so we never take our cue from what others are doing. We are supposed to be a club based on family values …we point the way to a standard of behavior that others can only dream and aspire to, so any celtic supporter who tells me that he is doing it because the supporters of club XXX is doing it clearly are not versed in their history.

It is high time that a few supporters recognise that Celtic is a club that is open to all irrespective of religion , class, political opinion. Hence if you want to express class, political opinion or anythiung else which does not encourage the catholic, ( and I use catholic here to symbolise universal and not religion), nature of the club, then you should find other avenues to express it. Yes we had our roots in Ireland but I am sure brother Wilfred did not set it up just to feed and provide a focal point for just the Irish … it is just coincidence that at the time most of the disaffected in Scotland were Irish….. but even from its humble beginings Celtic was open to all irrespective of etnicity, religion, political leanings or social status.

Those that seem to have a narrow view of the Celtic family, maybe they should “know the history” as the song goes. If they want a club that is neither all welcoming nor treats people both friends and opposition with respect and diginity and puts emphasis on a person’s religion, ethnicity and class … then I think that they should go and find a new club to support that meets their narrow view of humanity. I can suggest a good option for them along Govan area.

There is a good saying that a Celtic shirt does not shrink to fit inferior players . but that is on the field, off the field .. Celtic moral compass does not lower itself to suit those that wish belittle the celtic image. There is a previlage to being a Celtic supporter, you join a worldwide family… but within that family we have a collective family behavioral standard that maens that we are seen as being polite and well behaved whereever we go. It is the responsibility of anyone who is a member of this family to always act in such a manner to enhance the image and reputation of the family.

  9. Good old SFA at it again, collum will take charge of the old firm game after last years controversial game and yes the received he received death threats.
