St Johnstone 0-2 Celtic

609

Celtic were always in control against St Johnstone in Perth this afternoon and deservedly picked up the three points although it took them almost an hour to open the scoring.  Gary Hooper knocked in a loose ball on 59 minutes before Ki Sung-Yeung finished off a sweeping Celtic brea five minutes later.

St Johnstone kept things tight early on and kept Celtic from creating a chance before Georgios Samaras created space for a shot which was saved well by Enckelman.  Celtic’s best move of the first half came after 31 minutes when Ki, Forrest and Brown combined to release Hooper.  The striker shot low and on target but Enckelman pulled off a remarkable save.

Both teams picked up the pace after half time but it was Mackay who created the first chance of the second period, forcing a save from Fraser Forster.  Cha DuRi twice crossed dangerously.  Firstly for Hooper, whose hooked effort from 4 yards was turned over by the impressive Enckelman.   James Forrest then turned a snatched chance over from Cha’s next effort.

Just before the hour Charlie Mulgrew dropped a corner into the six yard box which Victor Wanyama contested.  The ball dropped between a sea of St Johnstone legs but Hooper was onto it in a flash and prodded over.

The game was put beyond the home team five minutes later.  St Johnstone were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Celtic penalty area after Mulgrew was penalised for climbing.  The Celtic was stood strong and from the subsequence block James Forrest drove forward at pace.  Samaras returned a 1-2 to Forrest to drew Enckelman before squaring for the unmarked Ki.  The Saints’ keeper did well but could not prevent Ki’s shot from crossing the line.

Samaras mishit a shot after the impressive Cha again crossed to effect before the Greek striker ran 40 yards and had his shot blocked.

St Johnstone’s only real chance fo the game came when Wanyama slipped to let Haber close in on Forster but the keeper was equal to the shot.

One more game to keep the pressure on and keep breathing down their necks.

Scott Brown did a lot of good work today- if only he could pass a ball. Wanyama was superb.

Watched him closely in the 2nd half we were right behind his goal, he oozed confidence.

  5. Great 3 points today, with big Dan oot for a while,do we go with Rogne or Wilson for the huns game?(me would prefer Wilson, but hardly played lately)maybe even go with Mulgrew&Wanyama? (no be surprised if Sneaky went with Jellylegs&Laffaminit up top?)even though lucky yesterday with one up at home v Caley.HAIL HAIL!

At the risk of breaking CQN harmony…can the Sammi haters identify themselves – just watching the big fella – he’s a class apart!

Fraser F passes the Old Firm test and I’m a convert… another sound performance today – Well done big fella!

I’ve said it before. Sad that I’m having to say it again. Would you all be making the sarky comments if the commentary was in Irish? Thought not.

To the smartarse who mentioned that the Gaelic for Samaras is Samaras, what’s the English for it?

And I would also like to point out that one of the commentators use to present The Daily Huddle.

Lots of excellent Celtic fans speak Gaelic. Not least a few on here.

    Another great 3 points.

Funny how we all see things differently, I thought Broonie was poor today. Sammi, Cha and Forest (second half) were the highlights.

Forster has been growing week after week in every aspect of his game and the one time he didn’t catch cleanly from a cross (which Sammi cleared) I thought he was fouled. It was great to see how much the Hearts penalty save meant to him and after a fantastic, and very busy, evening on Thursday he was focussed today. Long may it continue

  18. I’m 51 seconds into the ict rangers highlights on bbc website and ict should have had 2 penalties already. Rangers are riding their luck but will be so up for it in the old firm, alistair mccoist will have them full of horseyplops about siege mentalities and everybody’s against us. It’s going to be a real difficult mental test for us, hold our nerve and we’ll win well.

  19. voguepunter 1- Kano 1000

Hope so but they ignore what doesn’t suit them, airbrushing is a way of life for ra peepul.

  20. When they had that one on one in the second half with big Fraser it’s the first time I’ve though…he’ll save this!

Aye it was mate, always a worry after a euro trip, but the bhoys played well.

Did you see the highlights of the hun mob? really struggled and got away

    with murder as per.

We keep playing like this and that mob will need 3 instead of two pens(not that I

    am discounting that happening)

    Hail hail

  22. I mentioned to someone some months ago they could award Charlie Mulgrew the POTY award already. It’s a measure of the improvement that there are now several players who have worked their way into contention. James Forrest, Victor Wanyama, Charlie Mulgrew, and wait for it….big Sammy all staking a claim now.

Looking at the manner in which the darkside are playing, I see no reason why we cannot turn them over in 10 days time, and that’s not being complacent, I’m basing it on what I have seen since Naibalance was sidelined.

Stop the supply to Jelavic by controlling the midfield and they struggle as evidenced in the last few games. We however can look to several players to cause them problems, none more so than young James and big Sammy who could give their back four a real torrid time.

Get 2 goals clear of Killie early doors and get the key men off and wrapped in cotton wool.

Seems since Victor was moved into central defence we have looked a lot more solid.

The performance in Italy gave me great belief that this team has completed it’s apprenticeship, and the management team as well. I can see a comprehensive win in 10 days time. (although I’d take a 1-0 right now!)

Add 2 more faces in Jan and steamroller all in our way and wrap it up pre split is the basis of my letter to Santa. Huge party in our last game v the rotten mob post split.

Well done Lenny – visions of you running around the track in celebration at the last league game v them will have us in raptures and have them beyond themselves with rage.

They are fearing a Lenny title celebration. Really fearing it.

Make it happen – NO MERCY.

  23. Evening all,

Watched that game with the biggest hangover ever, think I understood the commentary!!

Nothing else for it, crack open a bottle of red.

Another cleansheet, we’ve a really good squad/team here. Roll on the 28th

    No offence taken,I hope.

Point made in a spirit of fun, not disrespect.

There’s no doubt it is decidedly strange listening to a commentary in a language you don’t understand.

Thanks for making a hard copy of the CQN magazine available online to UK residents, at a fair price. (for old bazzas like me who like to digest articles in hard copy). Don’t know if it would save you on admin, but maybe an option to buy 1, the next three or the next six ?

For a fiver ghuys, the postie will pop one through your letterbox. Lookin forward to it already.

  27. hamiltontim

Sorry, I was away watching BBC Alba

I acknowledged that Scott Brown’s passing was weak but he broke up every attack that St. J launched and he made himself available when teammates were being harried. I thought he took a leading role today and had a good, not a great, game.

I don’t know why people are surprised at Fraser Forster. I see only a slow gradual improvement rather than something dramatic since the Hearts pen. He got lots of plaudits for the Udinese game but, to me, he has been very good in all 6 Europa League games and made just as good saves in Rennes and made the best of his saves in Madrid when we lost.

  28. prestonpans bhoys on

Just back in from the game after two pints of course!!

Well done bhoys keep the pressure on them……….at HT I read their programme (at £1 btw!!) and it just struck me how young this team is, even Miss Prestonpans pointed out the some of them are younger then her.

  29. Hi Ghuys /Ghals, Good win Today after a hard away European tie – always tough but don’t think the result was ever in any doubt.

Can anyone advise where I can watch the huns game in Bratislava ?

I travel on day of game but will be there from mid afternoon onwards.

    Cheers
