Good stuff, it was all a bit mental then.

    In 1979 I was clearing 20 quid a week.

I started full time work in 1980 working as an apprentice in the shipyards and was only clearing 24 quid a week. That was a shock to my system. I was soon regretting giving up the paper round. :-))

    Football Boots.

I know many of you have heard this story before but ……..

I was given wee Jimmy’s Boots after the 5-1 defeat of Red Star Belgrade on 13th November 1968.

My old man was waiting around outside the ground when Jimmy and others came out and my dad asked him to give me the boots as it had been my 7th Birthday the week before.

My dad thought it was Jimmy’s greatest performance.

The boots were miles too big for me at size 5 but I knew that one day I would wear Jimmy Johnstone’s boots.

In the interim, my big cousin George (Yes Sips, that bloody Georg!) took them home to wash, dubbin and hang on to for the moment.

Of course when you are a teenager one day you are a size 4 and the next you are a 6 or a 7, so I never got to wear the bloody things and, to be honest, I forgot all about them.

Years later, I asked George if he still had Jimmy’s boots?

He looked a bit sheepish and explained that his son Thomas ( Yes Sips, that bloody Thomas!) had a wee pal who had got into the school team who was a right good player but came from a pretty poor family.

Apparently, the boy had no boots ……. but was a size 5!

Aye well, you know the rest.

And if you stop and think about it, there could have been no better outcome or destination for a pair of Celtic boots. Even for a pair of Jimmy’s!

I doubt the boy ever knew whose boots he was wearing and I have no idea what happened to them after that.

I had a mate who progressed from getting lift overs, to jumping over turnstiles from about 15 years old. He was an athlete, who would jump the turnstile then run at full pelt past stewards and cops into the crowd. He reckons he has skipped into every ground in Scotland that way as a teenager. :)

  12. Evening all

I recall that match on 5/11/83 – we had beat Sportimg Lisbon 5 nil on the Wednesday and it was the only time I mind going there to play the Original Rangers knowing we would win. Did not play particularly well and Big Packie gifted them a goal late on but result never in doubt.

Also exchanged texts with an ICT supportimg mate who is over in Buenos Aires at moment- he is a Racing sympathiser and was ar their game last night. Cardenas – who scored the deciding goal – took a bow. I gather that anybody turning up in hoops would be well recieved. I may put that to the test.

Choon heaven !!!..Headed off to Uni in 1968 and couldn’t believe how little I had to spend. I was forced to get a job in a bar and 2 hotel dishwashing gigs to reach the same level income I had as a teenage schoolboy.

Magic. The choon heaven, it’s stayed with you are your days, you must have had some amount of enjoyment over the years.

I’ve said before I have a keen music interest but certainly not to your level.

I’ve just realised that’s when it all really started when I had all the spare cash from the paper round.

As an aside when I had my paper round I was allowed to keep it all, as long as I gave my wee sister some pocket money. When I started work I had to hand dig money in, so working full time and worse off by a long way when you took bus fares into account too.

I can still recall 50 years ago tonight as if it was yesterday. At the bonfire with my mates, stomach churning. Then my da shouted from the verandah that we’d lost 1-0 to Racing Club. That feeling of sheer disappointment at a young age never leaves you.

  22. Does anyone remember football boots early 70’s that had a rotating disc with 4 studs at the front? Dear for muddy pitches and were supposed to allow you to swivel for a quick change of direction whilst the studs remained in the mud.

As a 10 year old they looked like space age technology ( I was wearing hand me down Billy’s boots circa 1950 with 2 pairs of socks and paper in the toe caps ) . They quickly disappeared off the market as they were more likely to break the ankle of the wearer.

Just checked Tinternet to be sure that I hadn’t imagined them ..

.made by TUF and were called TUFSPIN.

Endorsed by Alan Hinton Derby County ( which makes sense as the Baseball Ground was notoriously a mud bath.

Celtic’s record breaking domestic run broken down by stats and key games

The record was broken with a 4-0 win over St Johnstone but here are the key stats and games.

    SHARE

Celtic made history by going 63 games unbeaten with a thumping 4-0 win over St Johnstone on Saturday.

The run has been going for 542 days, with 56 wins, seven draws, 183 goals, 21 goalscorers and 36 clean sheets.

    Not bad.

Moussa Dembele scored 33 of those goals, with Leigh Griffiths hitting 19.

It all started with a big win over Motherwell in Ronny Deila’s final game in charge meaning Brendan Rodgers has been the manager for 62 of those games.

Here, Record Sport Online look at 10 key games.

    Celtic 7 Motherwell 0

Kieran Tierney opened the scoring and maybe it was a sign of things to come as the Celtic number 63.

Jack Aitchison became the youngest ever Celtic player and goalscorer on the same day as Ronny Deila roared at Celtic Park for the final time.

Tom Rogic, Mikael Lustig, Stuart Armstrong, Patrick Roberts and Ryan Christie also scored on the day.

    Celtic 5 Rangers 1

It was the match when Celtic really showed their dominance, and was the beginning of the end for Mark Warburton at Rangers.

Joey Barton flopped in the middle of the pitch with Scott Brown dominating him.

But the game is best remembered for Dembele’s hat trick with Scott Sinclair and Armstrong scoring the others. Philippe Senderos was sent off for Rangers, who scored through Joe Garner.

    Celtic 3 Aberdeen 0

The 2016 Betfred Cup Final was supposed to be a competitive affair, but the game was over before half time.

Rogic opened the scoring before James Forrest added a second with Dembele scoring from the spot in the second half.

It was the first trophy of the historic treble winning season.

    Motherwell 3 Celtic 4

The first time it looked like Celtic’s unbeaten run could be coming to an end was December 2016.

Louis Moult netted a double in the first half and Celtic were on the ropes. McGregor got one back early in the second half but an incredible three minute spell saw Roberts equalise on 70 minutes, Lionel Ainsworth put the home side back in front on 71 and Armstrong equalised again on 72.

Celtic have made a habit of scoring late goals and Rogic netted the winner on 90.

    Hearts 0 celtic 5

The day six in a row was sealed.

Sinclair scored a hat trick with Armstrong and Roberts adding the others.

Celtic ran riot at Tynecastle and it summed up their incredible season as they dominated from start to finish.

That day saw Celtic start without a main striker with Dembele and Griffiths both injured but it showed they had the firepower behind to do the job.

    Rangers 1 Celtic 5

If the 5-1 win at Celtic Park was the beginning of their dominance, then this one really showed how far ahead they were.

Getting their biggest Old Firm win at Ibrox was a game to remember and it was on the cards from the very start.

Sinclair scored a penalty early on, before Griffiths, McGregor, Boyata and Lustig added to it.

    Celtic 2 Aberdeen 1

Celtic made a habit of scoring late goals and this was the really big one.

Aberdeen dominated the early stages of the final and Jonny Hayes opened the scoring after nine minutes.

Armstrong equalised right away but it was end-to-end until the late stages.

As the game neared extra time, Rogic broke through the defence to complete the treble.

    Celtic 1 St Johnstone 1

McGregor has scored two vital late goals in the late stages of this run, and the first one came against St Johnstone.

Saints opened the scoring after a shocking error from Craig Gordon allowed MacLean to net.

Celtic pushed forward but couldn’t find a way through until McGregor made an appearance on 61 minutes.

McGregor played a one-two with Sinclair but it deflected off Anderson and back to the midfielder who smashed into the net for the equaliser.

    Celtic 2 Hibs 2

Once again it was McGregor who was the hero for Celtic.

He opened the scoring before John McGinn equalised for Hibs, before the midfielder put the Easter Road side in front.

It looked like Hibs were going to end the run but McGregor popped up on 80 minutes to equalise again.

The draw wasn’t great, but it was a vital result for the run.

    St Johnstone 0 Celtic 4

And the game the record was beaten.

The Hoops went to Perth to face St Johnstone and would have been expecting a tough game but it was anything but.

Sinclair opened the scoring before a late show from Dembele, a Steven Anderson own goal and Olivier Ntcham sealed the win and put Rodgers’ men into the history books.
