St Pauli 1-0 Celtic

1482

By Alex Gordon.

A DREADFUL penalty-kick miss by Bahrudin Atajic condemned Ronny Deila to his first defeat as Celtic manager.

The Bosnian striker had the ideal opportunity to level the scores four minutes from time after substitute Paul McMullan had been downed in the box.

Unfortunately, Atajic blazed his spot-kick over the bar into the Hamburg crowd much to the annoyance of the new Hoops gaffer.

It was a largely experimental Celtic line-up with Deila taking no risks ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League qualifier against Legia Warsaw in the Polish capital.

Alas, appalling defending by Filip Twardzik gifted the Germans the winning goal before the interval.

The left-back made a mess of trying to control a long and hopeful punt into the Celtic penalty box. The ball broke clear and was immediately presented to Christopher Nothe who could hardly believe his good fortune.

Nothe struck his effort first time from eight yards and Craig Gordon had no chance as the low drive zipped past his right hand in the 39th minute.

Twardzik toiled in the opening 45 minutes and was also booked in the 33rd minute after a lunging tackle after once again giving the ball away with a slack pass.

Celtic started at whirlwind pace and had three excellent opportunities inside the opening 10 minutes.

Atajic fizzed in a low shot from just outside the box, but keeper Philipp Tschauner got down swiftly to hold the ball at his right hand post.

Five minutes later, Tony Watt, looking lively on the left wing, tried his luck from a tight angle.

His shot totally bamboozled Tschauner, but carried over the crossbar and out to safety.

Amido Balde should have got the game’s opening goal in the 10th minute when he was through on goal after some neat play outside the box.

However, the Portuguese Under-21 international lacked composure at the vital moment and allowed the keeper to block his hurried parting shot.

Gordon, making his second appearance for the Hoops, showed he was still rusty after being out for over two years with a slack goal-kick to Nir Biton.

The Israeli midfielder, captain for the day, was taken unawares and St Pauli broke forward, but made a mess of the opportunity.

Stuart Findlay, partnering Eoghan O’Connell in the middle of the inexperienced back four, was also sloppy with some wayward passes, but the Hoops escaped punishment.

The game was billed as a friendly – and the clubs have an affiliation – but the home players weren’t slow to put in some punishing challenges.

Skipper Soren Gonther was yellow-carded for a rugby tackle on McGeouch that wouldn’t have looked out of place in Celtic’s current home at Murrayfield.

Liam Henderson tried to set up Balde with a neat chip into the danger zone, but the ball carried over the giant frontman’s head.

It looked like being a stalemate at the interval until Twardzik’s lapse in concentration and control allowed St Pauli to snatch the lead.

Deila put on Lukasz Zaluska for Gordon at half-time and replaced the ineffective Balde with Paul McMullan.

Henderson brought the St Pauli keeper into action with a long-range free-kick in the 65th minute. The idea was good, but, unfortunately, the execution didn’t quite match the ambition.

Zaluska produced one memorable moment when he pushed a raging effort from Sebastian Mhyre over the crossbar 10 minutes from time.

Then came Atajic’s dreadful spot-kick blunder which was followed in the last minute by an effort from Watt which swept just wide of the target.

As an exercise, it was worthwhile and the Celtic youngsters will expect to do better when presented with the opportunity to impress the new manager.

CELTIC: Gordon (sub: Zaluska 46); Herron, Findlay, O’Connell, Twardzik; Biton, Henderson, McGeouch; Atajic, Balde (sub: McMullan 46) and Watt.

Just caught your follow up question.

I don’t follow Rangers history closely enough to answer accurately. My best understanding is that there was no religious discrimination in the recruitment of Rangers players when they were founded. That policy crept in unannounced and unofficially around WW1. So I suspect that a catholic may have played for them in the 19th century but I honestly do not know or care.

In my volleyball career, I played against a team called Sikh Temple from Birmingham. It never bothered me if or whether they were all a team selected by religious profession. It did not bother me when I played a Maccabi team that may have all been Jewish. After all, I had played Boys Guild football and everyone there was RC, I believe, as were our Cub and Boy Scout teams, because the non-Catholics tended to play for Boys Brigade teams. Our school football teams were, pretty much, all catholic. None of them ever made an issue of religion. I only ever encountered one team who brought religion into sport and that was a touring US side called something like Athletes in Action, an evangelical team who invited you to join them in prayer after a match. It was not a big deal for anyone.

However, in professional sport, in the modern era, I think Rangers and Linfield were among the few to employ a religious basis for selection and recruitment. Have any Polish clubs ever refused to recruit anyone on religious grounds?

There were many Catholic Rangers players in the late 1800s. The earliest one that I know of was Patrick Lafferty 1886.

  7. Ger57. Sorry if my writing is too poor for you! I think my so called style is Bourne completely out of frustration and a reaction to the attitude and abuse that posters like you regularly give me.

I don’t claim everything I say is fact. In fact you will find I am very cautious of FACTS.

In any case it is completely inconceivable that celtic didn’t know about the 5 way agreement but let’s go with what you said. If we didn’t know why didn’t they respond furiously when they found out?

Thanks for the advice. I brought up the CQN page in the Apple Store to see if there were any replies and sure enough there you were. The store was VERY busy and several people read your post. I had to explain who the people were and how they exemplified the product etc. So I am now the owner of a Mac Book Pro.

There is a player inside Amido, just as there is a George Clooney personality within myself – sadly I fear neither suppressed positive will flourish, hence a dull as Doncaster personality for myself and a footballing struggle for the big man. That is life.

Report: Hamas Used Child Labor to Build Terror Tunnels; Hundreds Killed

    by Joel B. Pollak

    27 Jul 2014, 5:36 AM

Hamas killed hundreds of children in the construction of its extensive tunnel network, built partly to carry out attacks on children across the Gaza border in Israel. That report–confirmed by Hamas itself–emerged in 2012, not from the Israeli government, but the sympathetic Journal of Palestine Studies, in an article that otherwise celebrated the secret tunnel system as a symbol of Palestinian resistance to the Israeli “siege” of the Gaza Strip.

The article, “Gaza’s Tunnel Phenomenon: The Unintended Dynamics of Israel’s Siege,” was published in the Summer 2012 edition of the Journal by Nicholas Pelham, who writes for the Economist and the New York Review of Books, according to his bio. It is receiving new attention thanks to Myer Freimann of Tablet, an online journal of Jewish affairs, whose post about Hamas’s use of child labor has gone viral in social media.

Pelham wrote that despite the economic success of the tunnels underneath the Egyptian border, which enriched Hamas through a thriving black market as well as arming it with new weapons, there were a few drawbacks. One of these was a “cavalier approach to child labor and tunnel fatalities,” he noted. “During a police patrol that the author was permitted to accompany in December 2011, nothing was done to impede the use of children in the tunnels, where, much as in Victorian coal mines, they are prized for their nimble bodies. At least 160 children have been killed in the tunnels, according to Hamas officials” (emphasis added).

Though some children likely worked voluntarily, the fact that there were public complaints about child deaths, to which Hamas felt compelled to respond at least superficially,  is evidence of some amount of coercion. The number of deaths since 2012 has yet to be reported, but almost certainly exceeds the number Pelham reported.

To sum up: Hamas is not only using child labor, but likely child slavery, in building its terror tunnel network. While the world worries obsessively over the child casualties of Israeli attacks on Hamas targets in Gaza, it has ignored Hamas’s deliberate killing of hundreds of Palestinian children, over the objections of the local populace.

The knowledge that Hamas used children to dig tunnels for smuggling and terror up to 25 meters below ground changes the moral calculation of the war significantly. Not only does Hamas show extreme indifference to the lives of Palestinian children by using them as human shields, placing rockets in UN schools and the like, but it actively destroys those lives by sending Palestinian children to die underground in 19th century conditions.

Those defending the Palestinian resistance to Israel–and, equally, those demanding a ceasefire that would leave the Hamas tunnel network in place–are effectively defending a slaveholding regime more odious in moral terms than any the world has seen since the child soldiers of Joseph Kony’s brutal Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda, or the forced labor camps of the Nazis in the Second World War, who set children to work for the war effort.

It is rather ironic that President Barack Obama, who touted his own election in 2008 as an answer to the moral stain of slavery in America, would insist today on shoring up a Hamas administration that demonstrably uses child slavery. The Israeli government was reportedly shocked at how closely Obama’s ceasefire terms reflect the Hamas position. The American public ought to be shocked at how cynically Obama has cast morality aside.

  22. Re Watt he wants to poach like Swally if I may so, however the game has moved on and it seems so will Tony.

Big Baldie looks very raw but he knows where the goal is , problem has been the infinite number of square baws our midfield play , just does not suit him. Harald and Misser both runners equally found it difficult with Celtic deploying a tip tap possession strategy.

Never right off a player, new manager may get the best out of some fringe guys.

Still It will be turned into a board conspiracy by the usual muppets , I guess our dads had to put up with the drivel down the pub , scrolling past is much easier.

  23. Who the feck would buy Amido?

I’d rather buy a bit of class than buy a throw at the dice, like we seem to do and when we get a double six, we punt them for pennies in comparison to the transfers down south.

Build the team and fill Celtic park.
