St Pauli 1-0 Celtic

1482

By Alex Gordon.

A DREADFUL penalty-kick miss by Bahrudin Atajic condemned Ronny Deila to his first defeat as Celtic manager.

The Bosnian striker had the ideal opportunity to level the scores four minutes from time after substitute Paul McMullan had been downed in the box.

Unfortunately, Atajic blazed his spot-kick over the bar into the Hamburg crowd much to the annoyance of the new Hoops gaffer.

It was a largely experimental Celtic line-up with Deila taking no risks ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League qualifier against Legia Warsaw in the Polish capital.

Alas, appalling defending by Filip Twardzik gifted the Germans the winning goal before the interval.

The left-back made a mess of trying to control a long and hopeful punt into the Celtic penalty box. The ball broke clear and was immediately presented to Christopher Nothe who could hardly believe his good fortune.

Nothe struck his effort first time from eight yards and Craig Gordon had no chance as the low drive zipped past his right hand in the 39th minute.

Twardzik toiled in the opening 45 minutes and was also booked in the 33rd minute after a lunging tackle after once again giving the ball away with a slack pass.

Celtic started at whirlwind pace and had three excellent opportunities inside the opening 10 minutes.

Atajic fizzed in a low shot from just outside the box, but keeper Philipp Tschauner got down swiftly to hold the ball at his right hand post.

Five minutes later, Tony Watt, looking lively on the left wing, tried his luck from a tight angle.

His shot totally bamboozled Tschauner, but carried over the crossbar and out to safety.

Amido Balde should have got the game’s opening goal in the 10th minute when he was through on goal after some neat play outside the box.

However, the Portuguese Under-21 international lacked composure at the vital moment and allowed the keeper to block his hurried parting shot.

Gordon, making his second appearance for the Hoops, showed he was still rusty after being out for over two years with a slack goal-kick to Nir Biton.

The Israeli midfielder, captain for the day, was taken unawares and St Pauli broke forward, but made a mess of the opportunity.

Stuart Findlay, partnering Eoghan O’Connell in the middle of the inexperienced back four, was also sloppy with some wayward passes, but the Hoops escaped punishment.

The game was billed as a friendly – and the clubs have an affiliation – but the home players weren’t slow to put in some punishing challenges.

Skipper Soren Gonther was yellow-carded for a rugby tackle on McGeouch that wouldn’t have looked out of place in Celtic’s current home at Murrayfield.

Liam Henderson tried to set up Balde with a neat chip into the danger zone, but the ball carried over the giant frontman’s head.

It looked like being a stalemate at the interval until Twardzik’s lapse in concentration and control allowed St Pauli to snatch the lead.

Deila put on Lukasz Zaluska for Gordon at half-time and replaced the ineffective Balde with Paul McMullan.

Henderson brought the St Pauli keeper into action with a long-range free-kick in the 65th minute. The idea was good, but, unfortunately, the execution didn’t quite match the ambition.

Zaluska produced one memorable moment when he pushed a raging effort from Sebastian Mhyre over the crossbar 10 minutes from time.

Then came Atajic’s dreadful spot-kick blunder which was followed in the last minute by an effort from Watt which swept just wide of the target.

As an exercise, it was worthwhile and the Celtic youngsters will expect to do better when presented with the opportunity to impress the new manager.

CELTIC: Gordon (sub: Zaluska 46); Herron, Findlay, O’Connell, Twardzik; Biton, Henderson, McGeouch; Atajic, Balde (sub: McMullan 46) and Watt.

My apologies re. Charlie Adam. I didn’t see a post from you but thought I read a post from someone else which seemed to suggest that you had linked Charlie Adam to Celtic. I for one don’t want him. He’s a hammer thrower.

    Re Tony Watt.

If he is going to Standard Liege then it is a shame but it is inevitable.

Immediately after the Barcelona game where he scored the winner, I spoke to someone whom i would trust implicitly who had met Tony in a night club during the following week.

The meeting was by chance, and the two did not know one another.

Young Watt apparently made it plain that the most important thing about the Barcelona goal was how it enhanced his reputation, put him in the spotlight and would bring about a big money move for him– with West Brom being mentioned at the time.

The party who spoke to me said there seemed to be a real attitude problem and said that he did not think that Tony would be at Celtic that long as he wanted away for the “big money”.

Not too long after that, I was told by someone completely different that there was a real attitude problem with the boy believing he had made it and was on the verge of a move to elsewhere. Further, the club were well aware of his attitude and were trying to bring him back to earth so to speak.

The rest as they say is history.

I hope he screws the nut and goes on to greater things but unless he has grown up a fair bit in the last two years he may never fulfil the potential that was there for him to grasp.

Put it this way with goals scored 3 and goals conceded 14 in CL last year I think it’s best if Celtic do qualify.

An even bigger humiliation this season will be good in the long run.

    IMHO.

Re yer video… a wee critique,

As someone who works in Communications, ditch the title and subject line and, use, for instance, “It’s a Wonderful Life”.

As for the Subject line…. make it “Is It?”

I say this as someone who, when clicks on various vids on the same subject then automatically clicks away, seen them all.

You want to keep people interested (for 4 sec) and they will watch the rest of the video.

PS, I watched all of the video shocking as it was, cracking music but, think about drawing people into watch it.

    Mega Tag various words etc…

William Kivlichan ( otherwise known as Doc or Dr Kivlichan ) was a Catholic who played for Rangers in 1906 immediately before joining Celtic in 1907 for one of the greatest eras in the club’s history.

I know relatives of Willie’s and his is a story that I will get round to telling one day.

*Dr Kivlichan’s grandson is a doctor over here and once was in a practice I used to attend.

I believe ger57 got alec bennett mixed up with him as when bennett left us to join his boyhood heroes Willie replaced him in the side, it was not a swap, it just turned out that way.

Willie went on to be a police surgeon in Glasgow and was also the club’s team doctor, in fact it was he who was first on the park when John Thomson was fatally injured.

As for alec bennett, seemingly he regretted leaving the bhoys.

No worries. Thanks for the advice mate. Only the 2nd video I’ve made, took up so much time I just wanted to get it out there. I’ll have a think about it and maybe change it up tomorrow.

  17. Was at the CG opening ceremony on Wednesday evening. Lots of highlights.

John Barrowan’s gay wedding kiss at the start was an important wee nod to the disturbing commonwealth countries who criminalise homosexuality. Glad this was not ignored.

The corner of the Lisbon Lions stand with no view of the giant screen was filled with flags of the commonwealth. Made me think of the diverse faiths and cultures who have sat there over the years…

The Big Yin’s spiel about the naming of Nelson Mandela Place was informative. I didn’t realise that was where the South African consulate was situated and they were forced into an embarrassing address change.

As the athletes came past, a Lesotho guy doing some funky wheelie/spin moves in his wheelchair came a cropper when one of his wheels fell off. A gasp from the Lisbon Lions stand, then the fella stood up (?!), fixed his wheel back on, sat back down and spinned off to a cheer from the Lions stand.

Our favourite Tongan raised a huge cheer each time he ran toward the crowd with his hoops top. He did it about 10 times as he made his way round.

Special cheers seem to be reserved for team England. There’d be a few English folks in the stands alright but it seemed to be something more than that.

The athletic ladies of Wales in their red dresses stole the show for me.

Betty arrived and God Save the Queen rang out. Was what is and isn’t surreal discussed a few days ago?

As dusk crept in, the neon lights on the North stand that read “Celtic Football Club 1888” grew bolder and bolder.

Had the Celtic board come out all guns blazing at that time, there is no doubt, IMO, they would have been accused of stoking the fires of civil unrest etc which Regan had already predicted were Sevco not to be allowed to join the top league, or at worst, the second tier. Remember also the hordes had marched on Hampden, prominent huns were talking about their “enemies”, Sleekit was demanding the names, Raith Rovers ground was under threat of being burned down, and other individuals were warned by the police of threats to their safety.

All this in addition to the attacks on NFL, Paul McBride and Tricia Godman.

Our First Minister had gone on record talking about the importance of Rangers to Scottish society, Labour MPs spoke about HMRC treating them as a special case.

The MSM studiously ignored evidence pointing to serious lack of governance at the SFA.

But the Celtic board could have done something. Aye, right.

I read a book on the “Old Firm” about 20 years ago.

It stated that after 2/3 years of the league and cup being won by Celtic and Hibernian (1st Catholic club) in 1920’s the Scottish media challenged the “Scottish” clubs to mount a challenge to the 2 Irish clubs.

Rangers, who were the “best of the rest” at that time, decided to be the Protestant alternative to the 2 Catholic teams – and things were never the same again.

Up to that point Rangers were just another Glasgow club like Clyde, Patrick Thistle and Queens Park.

I hope you enjoy your team just narrowly failing to beat the mighty Celtic over the next 10 days :-)

I’d like a club of the stature of Celtic to have a long term vision. Celtic have had ample opportunity to grow in a structured way over the last 10 years having managers like MON, WGS Lenny, some legendary players and coinciding with hun implosions. However, not with the current executive custodians of the club. Their mantra of
