Stand up for the Champions

I know when you begin to dominate a championship that when another team eventually lift the trophy it can seem like an intolerable failure; compare our distress in 2009 to our resolve to do better after the final home game in 1996.  Time adds perspective to our triumphs.  As does not being there and seeing photos of the presentation hours after the event.

These are special times, enjoy them.

Many thanks to the Columba Club in Blantyre for Friday night’s Question and Answer event, and to the irrepressible Phil Agnew, who organised the event.  I was delighted to share a stage with Paul McConville and Phil Mac Giolla Bhain.  Great to see so many CQN’ers there too, my only regret is that I didn’t get a chance to catch up with everyone. With supporters like those in Blantyre on Friday night, we’re in good hands.

Remember to buy Heart of a Lion, Willie Wallace’s magnificent autobiography, available below.

See this orange walk that I got caught up in yesterday morning on Duke street. How come the knuckle draggers weren’t kettled and beaten with sticks the same way the wee boys from the GB were a few weeks back?

Why is it they allowed to conduct their shameful sectarian marches with the full blessing of the council and the police?

These marches are an affront to decency and don’t belong in modern society. Disgusting vile people full of hatred should be locked up, but instead they roam our streets playing their wee flutes and drums, terrorising decent people in the middle of our towns and cities. They are a stain on Scotland that should be wiped up and flushed down the toilet.

Meant to say… 36 minutes into the second video (the lower one) you’ll see the assault.

    Good Afternoon Folks.

I am sure that by now many folk are fed up with me saying strange things happen at Celtic Park or to people who wear a Celtic strip.

However, I do not know why or how fate decrees that such strange things happen but they do– and I have no idea why they happen to people who follow our club– but they do.

A few weeks ago, I wrote a wee article on my own blog page and I called it “Living in a city of immigrants”.

It was all about living in Glasgow and how Celtic were a team and a club who fielded players from all over– irrespective or colour, race or creed.

In it I highlighted that Celtic were the first European Club to field an Indian Player– Mohammed Salim– and that he played for Celtic long before the first Italian Player– Rolando Ugolini.

In the course of the article I was really saying that there were three countries that began with I — India, Ireland and Italy– who have all contributed greatly to the immigrant population of Glasgow– and that players from all three countries had played for Celtic.

In the end I pointed out that there was a young man of Irish/Indian ethnicity who had recently played in the youth squad who was now in America studying for a Law Degree at Chicago University– he was also related to Matt Lynch who played for and served the club for years. The boy is called Ciaran Kohli Lynch.

Anyway, so there I am having written this story when the opportunity arises to take a wee break for a day or two to the Isle of Arran, where lo and behold, I meet up with the parents of Ciaran Kohli Lynch– friends who I had not seen in a good few years.

I hadn’t told them that I had written about young Ciaran, but sitting about at night I found the article on line and showed it to his mum and dad– and later sent it on to Ciaran himself.

However, I was in for a surprise when I did so.

I doubt if anyone else has ever written anything else that links Ciaran to Mohammed Salim or Roloando Ugolini– sure there would be no reason to.

However, having read the article, Ciaran’s mum then told me the most amazing story.

A few years ago the family went on holiday to Tuscany and one day they found themselves in the town of Lucca.

A young Ciaran ( he is the only boy in the family ) was running around the town ( as boys are want to do ) wearing a green and white hooped shirt. Obviously you see the odd hooped shirt when you are abroad but they are not always ten a penny and it is safe to say that Ciaran and his Celtic shirt are likely to have been unique in the town on this particular day.

Anyway, he is running about doing whatever when he is stopped by an elderly man who says ” Hey– that is MY team!”.

The man talks to the young boy and his parents and explains he used to play for Celtic and that they are HIS team.

He provides his name– which means nothing to the family as they have never even heard of Rolando Ugolini and to be honest it is only when they return home and look him up on the internet that they discover anything about him. They had simply never heard of an Italian who played for Celtic in the 40’s and they were amazed to just bump into him in the centre of Lucca– and would not have done so if their boy had not been wearing THAT shirt.

Accordingly I think they were quite surprised and pleased when they saw my wee article that linked Uncle Matt, Ciaran and Ugolini. Their meeting Ugolini was a pure coincidence and my writing about Ciaran and Ugolini together was another pure coincidence.

I find things like that just amazing.

Celtic Football Club and hooped shirts– making connections and coincidences– for 125 years and more!

  10. While I don’t need to repeat on here how much I despise Walker and his ilk, I sometimes wonder why they do us down. I take it that it is to keep their jobs in the media. The trouble, as I see it, is that they are never going to be accepted by those they are trying to ingratiate themselves with. I wonder too how they face their families and friends (certainly Walker and Nevin) as they are among the people they do down by their bias.

Its not the marching thats the problem its that they get permission to march. Put them in a field somewhere and they can march till they drop imo. Poor cattle!!

  14. My dismay at Walker yesterday was his lack of courage to just plain call something for what it was.

He saw the re-runs. Yet went out of his way to poorly try and justify the assault. The cameras focussing in on the guy smirking.

We talk of role models – you don’t have to be a Celtic supporter to comment on a nasty, vicious, considered assault.

Lustig is very lucky not to be sitting with his jaw wired up. In a game where St J were trounced, and that early, and saw Celtic carry 80% of the possession.

I despair when the truth is spoken out loud.

    Enjoy your soup Andy.

    ===========

I used to see Matt Lynch on a Sunday in The Afton Bar in Paisley with his great friend Pat Flood. Both were real gentleman. Couldn’t say that about the rest of the clientele including my old Faither in law. :-)

  17. I recorded the game yesterday and have just watched the Fraser Wright attack on Lustig.

Totally disgusting, premeditated and must be dealt.

As for Walker’s comments – even more disgusting. He is defending the indefensible by blaming the victim.

  18. In the match yesterday, even in real time, never mind slo-mo, you could see the neanderthal lining up exactly what he was going to do to Lustig. And it had to be absolutely calculated, because a blow like that if delivered in the right place will kill.

And yet the horrors in the studio said ML should expect this kinda thing…….since when?

No doubt an x-ray / scan would’ve had to be done to ensure no lingering damage.

Mate, I would disagree when you, or anybody else, who proclaims Neil Lennon a prince among men. Neil Lennon is not even a King among men, he is merely Neil Lennon. He is a common man with class to burn; albeit with a six counties accent. In the status order – our God above us is above him – our God above us looks down on him with a smile. Neil Lennon looks down on nobody but he doesn’t look up to any either. Apart from his God and his family.

Did Matt not used to go up to an Irish Club or Catholic Club in Paisley on a Sunday? I used to run his brother Jim up there regularly each Sunday– can’t remember the name of the club and would have to ask.

He regularly had a pint in Harvey’s in Glasgow Road.

No Matt wasn’t related to Andy I don’t think– bit coincidentally I was at the opening of one of Andy’s Pubs in the Gorbals with my dad a good few years ago.

Andy Lynch was always a really nice guy. Lovely fella.

Years ago and I mean years ago guys from Dundyvan iron works used to paint the bridge at the Clock Bar with the tricolour and other things. Then they wd pour the green paint over the street so they wd have to walk thru it. Oh what a laff we had. They were still trying to get the green paint of thems shoes by the time they got to Chrichton street. LOL306 to you and I.
