Standing up for your views, San Siro

658

Another day another Uefa fine for crowd-related transgressions, the umpteenth in recent years.  When we went to Seville we knew you could take tens of thousands of Celtic fans anywhere, secure in the knowledge they would make friends with police and locals alike.  That reputation’s gone, the Fifa and Uefa awards, relics.

The world appears to have its share of Pussy Rebels.  Someone who will tarnish another’s reputation (in this case Celtic) but not have sufficient courage in their convictions (in this case their right to break Uefa rules) that they will do so in their own name, accepting consequences accordingly.

The internet is full of them too, keyboard hard men who will carry a campaign to the ends of the earth, as long as it doesn’t leave a trace of identifying information.  If their name gets out, they will run 100m in the opposite direction of their declared stance, faster than Usain Bolt at am Olympic final.  Pussy Rebels, every one of them.  Lots of people have crazy/offensive/just plain wrong views, but manage to put their names to them – nutcases, but Tiger Rebels.

If you have a view, or way you like to enjoy a game of football, stand up for it.

The incidents in Zagreb pale into insignificance compared to the mini-bus attack which left a child injured before the League Cup semi-final.  That wasn’t a rule transgression, it was proper violence.

A few days after the incident I wrote I was concerned there had been no arrest.  Despite the overwhelming outrage among Celtic fans and others, and the damage done to the victim, the reward money is still unclaimed.  Do the proper thing, report the crime and claim your reward.  We have a reputation worth putting your name to.

Not sure how things will go (on the field) tomorrow night.  Celtic have an incredible record in the San Siro over 90 minutes, four draws and I think only a couple of defeats?  A win would see us into the last 16, it’s a huge ask, but don’t bet against Ronny.

Farewell James Easdale, we’ve loved your work.

My thanks to Andy Coyle.  Don’t know him from Adam, but he called me out of the blue, met outside Celtic Park, and put £100 in my hand for our Mary’s Meals appeal.  God bless the Celtic support.

On the subject of which, you know you’re dealing with someone special when you learn Lisa Hague, Kris Commons partner, bought a ticket for CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner.  She’ll be helping out too, more on that later.  After the dinner we have Packy Bonnar, Joe Miller, Tommy Coyne and the one-and-only Tom Boyd, with Archie Macpherson speaking about Jock Stein and Patricia Ferns on song.

Let me know if you still need a ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com

  1. Don’t often post but feel the need to today following the reaction from some Celtic fans to the media reports of another UEFA fine.

Firstly, I was in section 111 the night of the Rennes game, first and only visit, and I came on here and defended them from the allegations made that night and the subsequent fine. There was no pro IRA chanting at Celtic park that night, I certainly heard one from section 111. Why it was reported there was and why Celtic did not appeal that particular fine remains a mystery.

Secondly, on here and around Twitter Celtic fans are taking the opportunity to sink the boot into those Celtic supporters who actually made the trip based on the SMSM accounts of what happened.

I happened to be there and it seems I’m everything from a clown to a plastic rebel. I’m neither and neither is the huge majority of the Celtic support who travelled to Zagreb.

I don’t condone the flare but I don’t believe that is what Celtic have been fined for. An altercation occurred in a small pocket, the riot police in heavy armour proceeded to surround the whole support, very intimidating. The police then waded into the small pocket with batons drawn, the inevitable happened when someone is trying to batter you or your mates senseless. There was no need for such a heavy handed response, I’ll argue that forever and a day.

Seems strange to me that as a support we constantly bemoan the integrity of the SMSM and the SFA but are quick to believe the MSM and UEFA in this instance, why should UEFA be any better or less useless than the SFA?

Never mind, why let the truth get in the way of a good story.

  2. Theres an ad at the bottom of my CQN page stating, `Free transfers, send money abroad for free.`

Why would I want to send my money abroad? Even if it is for free?

  3. We’re way too quick to criticise fellow supporters afterthe bus incident. No evidence at all (yet). What happened to the celtic family? Falling over ourselves to condemn and criticise not to mention handing over a wedge to the victims family. Ditto rennes singing fiasco. Far too quick at the forelock tugging.

  4. Sevcomedians experimenting with peyote:

“f you told Muslim or a Jew to go home, there would be outrage, and rightly so. The same would apply if you said it in relation to Sikhs, Hindus or Catholics.

Action against those committing the crime, would be demanded by all.

Yet, in 21st century Scotland, Protestants are fair game for being told to go home, complete with derogatory sectarian term of abuse. It has been going on for decades.

Why are Protestants considered second class citizens in modern day Scotland when it comes to their rights?”

    ——

“I’ve only experienced it once in the workplace by a Dundee Utd supporting women who called me a h[un] when she found out I was a Rangers fan. I said to her, what do you mean by that? She replied, you know a Rangers fan. I told her that I found it offensive. I probably should have taken the matter further, but I am thick skinned.”

    ——

“as native Scots this is our home ..remind the immigrants of this”

    ——

“We as a group and community simply don’t have the political will or interest, to take on our enemies where it counts, at Westminster and Holyrood.

They have gained political power through Scottish labour, when that went a bit its up. They simply moved on to the SNP.

Look at the GCC, it’s a catholic community and Celtic run supports club for the benefit of that community, same with BBC Scotland.”

    ——

“The rug has been pulled from under the feet of a huge section of Scottish society, and we let it happen.”

    ——

“It’s been going on for years… First they infiltrated the labour party and then the law, media and anything you care to mention, even the complaints system and charities… but we should not give up on politics in Scotland as if we do, we might actually one day see our society being organised from Rome once again.

There’s some ‘bull’ from Rome dating back to the 11th century or so, claim Scotland as a daughter of Rome. Like all laws they pass, this as far as they’re concerned, this is still current.”

    ——

“If only the British government had sent the tattle munchers aid when they needed it we would have none of this bigotry, we probably wouldn’t even have had that excuse of a club in the east of Glasgow”

    ——

“Because no one speaks for them. That lot have multiple bodies and individuals doing their bidding.

We are 2nd class citizens whether we admit it or not.

The Church of Scotland no longer recognise the word Protestant.

The Orange Order do not speak out on such matters. If they do it’s rare and incoherent.

The media is infiltrated and run by them.”

Def get one fully-loaded. Certain ones provide updates when the links etc are moved. I would not really recommend as a replacement for Sky/Cable, as there is no programme menu as such, but for a second tv ideal. You really need to know what you’re looking for in that respect. But I don’t regret purchasing mine. Last night for instance there were links to around 140 live games coming up this week throughout the world. Not to mention the thousands of movies and series that are sitting waiting for you to watch. Quality depends on the feed and your internet speed. 10mb is recommended to get full benefit, however mine is only 2mb and is usually perfectly accceptable. Considering an upgrade to fibre though!

For normal telly I think you’re better off getting a Freesat box. Works with your Sky dish. I got a Humax one and the HD picture quality is far better than Sky’s.

  7. That the assailant of Kieran Duffy has failed to hand himself in should come as no surprise. That his friends and associates failed to assist the investigation even less so. They, one and all, have joined the cowards rank. And that is where they will remain.

You can (never used it myself) through a few programs, Mobdro being one. Remember to make sure your broadband connection is pretty decent or they won’t run properly.

  9. Paul 67,

I don’t expect you will get unanimous support for your leader today, but I thought it was worth saying, and well said.

That’s nearly 100k in fines, and when you include the in house management time and assumed legal advice , probably double.

  10. “A flare had been lit ” – passive voice, weasel words.

I posted this on the Huddleboard this morning:

Anyone who takes a firework to a football match is a moron. Anyone who sets a firework off is a criminal, and a moron.

A 100 per cent committed, dyed in the wool Stoke fan set off one of these fireworks in the crowded concourse at half-time in the cup tie at Blackburn the other week … there are invertebrates with more sense than some of the people you have to associate with at football matches.

Blame the police, blame UEFA, blame Lawwell, blame Paul (!!!) but don’t blame the moron who brought the firework to the match and set it off. Weak, hopeless, childish evasion of facts.

  11. It’s the flares that’s the problem, i’ve been all over in Europe at away games and seen little trouble from Tic supporters. I’ve witnessed heavy policing/stewarding as was the case in Udine, the stewards were right out of order on that particular night, they actually tried to withhold a guys small bag that contained his phone, cash & passport.

I witnessed this myself and if i was a bit younger i would have waded into the bastards myself on that night.

  12. If I knew the person who threw the bottle into the Rangers supporters bus, I would have a word in his ear and tell him to do the decent thing and hand himself in. I certainly wouldn’t consider reporting him myself.

I don’t know what that would make me, but I would have to live with it.

  13. Why doesnt the club come out and tell UEFA that they are doing everything possible.

That way we will never be in trouble again.

    Well.

Is that not the way it works in Scotland. We could always call Neil Doncaster as our star witness

  14. Remember the half bottle of vodka thrown from the Jungle onto the pitch in the match with Rapid Vienna? It gave a beaten club an excuse to cheat, it gave UEFA an opportunity to hammer us, it denied us the opportunity of winning a second European trophy – or at least getting to a final. Everton? They were there to be taken IMHO.

It knocked us out of Europe the next season when we played a second leg at home against Atletico Madrid in an empty stadium. We drew in Spain then lost in a deserted Celtic Park. We started to lose our way as a club after that, slowly but surely. Recovery took years.

All for a half bottle of vodka. What price a flare?

I should say that if you’re not interested in being able to Sky+ or HD your sky box will still pick up free to air channels.

  17. Thanks for the advice guys, ill maybe use freeview for normal telly and get an android box for live sports and movies

  18. Winning Captains,

I was at both the home and neutral Rapid games.

As you say the actions of one imbecile had grave consequences.

If I remember correctly, Athletico were beatable, and I suspect playing to a full CP could have made the difference.

After the Rapid game, Desmond Whyte received widespread criticism for not paying for the first aid attendant to fly to the Appeal.

In that instance Desmond probably made an error, and was made out as the bad guy , whilst the bottle thrower faded into anonymity, and our team got put out of Europe.

I made the point that if “respectable” people do nothing when a group are being dehumanised by songs and slogans, then evil will triumph, as in Nazi Germany. You took exception to my comparing thems to the Nazis. I still maintain that the precursor to the holocaust was the systematic dehumanising of the Jews by the Nazi propoganda machine.

The progroms in Belfast in 1968/69 were preceded by the hateful speeches by Paisley and his ilk.

On a lighter note, and fairly topical, do you remember Mr Scally telling us from the balcony in the days leading up to the 1970 EC final that nobody was allowed time off to go to Milan? I clearly remember that the morning prayers the following morning were VERY sparsely attended. Did you stay or did you go?

  21. Ger57 –

I didn’t go to Milan in 1970. My father went but no way could the family afford more than him going. However, I did boycott morning assembly on principal, as did many others. Did you go?

    What is it with Hibs?

HIBS star Jason Cummings has been banned from McDonald’s over claims he threw muffins at staff.

I just thought the comparison to Nazi Germany was rather extreme, and if you are talking about “dehumanising” people, what do you think the “Build a Bonfire” song does, especially in the context of Germany in the 1930s.

  28. Anyone carrying a flare at a football match should be heavily fined. In this case Celtic should issue a statement saying that if they suffer in anyway because of this act, they will start court proceedings to claw back the fine and damage to their reputation.

The press reported two violent incidents surrounding the Old Firm game.

This one, and one in Lanarkshire in which the Daily Record informed us a hun supporter had been set upon by two or more Celtic fans and subjected to a sustained beating.

The general understanding now is that the version of events narrated by the Daily Record was wrong, that none of those involved were Celtic fans and that sectarianism wasn’t an issue.

Maybe worth bearing in mind when considering the other incident.
