Standing up for your views, San Siro

658

Another day another Uefa fine for crowd-related transgressions, the umpteenth in recent years.  When we went to Seville we knew you could take tens of thousands of Celtic fans anywhere, secure in the knowledge they would make friends with police and locals alike.  That reputation’s gone, the Fifa and Uefa awards, relics.

The world appears to have its share of Pussy Rebels.  Someone who will tarnish another’s reputation (in this case Celtic) but not have sufficient courage in their convictions (in this case their right to break Uefa rules) that they will do so in their own name, accepting consequences accordingly.

The internet is full of them too, keyboard hard men who will carry a campaign to the ends of the earth, as long as it doesn’t leave a trace of identifying information.  If their name gets out, they will run 100m in the opposite direction of their declared stance, faster than Usain Bolt at am Olympic final.  Pussy Rebels, every one of them.  Lots of people have crazy/offensive/just plain wrong views, but manage to put their names to them – nutcases, but Tiger Rebels.

If you have a view, or way you like to enjoy a game of football, stand up for it.

The incidents in Zagreb pale into insignificance compared to the mini-bus attack which left a child injured before the League Cup semi-final.  That wasn’t a rule transgression, it was proper violence.

A few days after the incident I wrote I was concerned there had been no arrest.  Despite the overwhelming outrage among Celtic fans and others, and the damage done to the victim, the reward money is still unclaimed.  Do the proper thing, report the crime and claim your reward.  We have a reputation worth putting your name to.

Not sure how things will go (on the field) tomorrow night.  Celtic have an incredible record in the San Siro over 90 minutes, four draws and I think only a couple of defeats?  A win would see us into the last 16, it’s a huge ask, but don’t bet against Ronny.

Farewell James Easdale, we’ve loved your work.

My thanks to Andy Coyle.  Don’t know him from Adam, but he called me out of the blue, met outside Celtic Park, and put £100 in my hand for our Mary’s Meals appeal.  God bless the Celtic support.

On the subject of which, you know you’re dealing with someone special when you learn Lisa Hague, Kris Commons partner, bought a ticket for CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner.  She’ll be helping out too, more on that later.  After the dinner we have Packy Bonnar, Joe Miller, Tommy Coyne and the one-and-only Tom Boyd, with Archie Macpherson speaking about Jock Stein and Patricia Ferns on song.

Let me know if you still need a ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com

You’re probably right, I have no memory for these things. I wonder if UEFA draw a distinction between flares set off prior to kick off and those let off during the game.

I certainly wouldn;t want one near me when I take LB Jr to games.

We have a big game tomorrow and should be talking formations and thinking about our chances. As usual we are discussing guff like flares and what other fans are singing.

    Alfie..,

How many times must you be corrected, Celtic has always had a political element from foundation on.

Today the guardians only enforce political conformity, from poppy to carrying political adverts.

Charity is a fundamentally political statement.

    ——————————————————————————————————————-

Celtic have always had a charitable core.

Do you know what charity is?

Charity is the voluntary giving of help to those in need – it could not be further away from politics, in its purest sense.

I am always open to correction when the correct facts are forthcoming – BUT – I am never open to COERCION.

    from the beeb website

2011 – fined £12,600 in 2011 after supporters made pro-IRA chants during Europa League home match against Rennes

2012 – fined a further £21,000 after fans unfurl a banner criticising Uefa and set off flares away to Italian side Udinese

2013 – fined £4,200 when a firework was let off during the Champions League qualifier against Cliftonville at Celtic Park

2014 – fined £42,000 for “illicit” banners at home defeat by AC Milan

2015 – fined £7,300 for crowd disturbance away to Dinamo Zagreb

Article 16 of UEFA’a disciplinary code includes just about every activity known to man.

    Including blessing yourself.

  11. Alfie..,

Celtic has always had very strong links to the Irish emancipation movement, or should we simply ignore that political connection ?

The poppy on the jersey is a very strong political statement

Holding a minutes silence for political activists is a very strong political statement

Charity IMO is a fundamentally political statement in that it identifies that those in receipt are not being properly cared for by their state.

I have seen you mention going to see your family in Motherwell and thought I’d ask. Hope you enjoyed meeting up with CQNers at CP recently.

You should try to get to the next hootenanny or even the golf day in July. Aberdour is perhaps handier for you. If you don’t play golf, you can still attend the evening do. Every CQNer I’ve met has been great company.

BTW, Paul if you’re about, when is the golf day this year? I have my eldest son’s wedding on Sat 4th July. Hope there isn’t a clash of dates.

by ra way big man….. ‘good lhad, power to ra peepil and all that…’ ?

It would seem you don’t have to carry a flare to be a ‘wee dick’ within the Celtic support.

  28. People are absolutey right to point out that the ‘scale’ of the flare problem and one or two banners is insignificant in comparison to tens of thousands singing sectarian bile and all that….

But…… That is to miss the point.

The fact that most Celtic supporters care about the good reputation of the club means we will get het up about it; the fact that one idiot on the pitch at CP or with a flair in Milan will get more publicity than 20,000 singing the billy boys or 2000 singing racist and sectarian chants about Stan collymore…..

We’re different and we have higher standards than others. Most of us like it that way.

We get enough bad press with lies and false comparison without allowing a literal handful of eejits to ruin it.
