Stats reveal Aberdeen turn up when it suits

80

Aberdeen sit eighth in the Premiership table, one of the rare sides not to have recorded a victory over the champions this season.  With 12 points still to contest, they can no longer make the top six at the split and are 8 points from the relegation playoff spot.  A 2-0 Scottish Cup win over red card-afflicted Motherwell was a recent bright spot.  They have played nine league games this calendar year, with seven defeats, one draw and one win. So it will be straightforward tonight, right?

Aberdeen have been safe from relegation and in no danger of reaching a European place for months.  They are by any definition coasting towards the end of the season, fulfilling fixtures to the letter of their contracts, while waiting for the next poor soul to be appointed manager.  They are a significantly better squad than results suggest and are in no worse a state than they were when they denied Celtic a treble at Hampden in May.

In their nine league games this year, they recorded most shots on target (7) against Livingston, whom they defeated 6-2.  Their second most short on target game was against Newco.  For context, they only made 7 attempts on target across all four league games last month.

Aberdeen turned up when Newco were in town and they will do the same tonight.  They will be motivated and less stressed by the rigours of exertion than Celtic.  Tonight is so much more important than the cup game at the weekend the two matches do not deserve to be mentioned on the same page.  It would be a huge win for the champions, if achieved.

  1. finally,

nephews youth team were in Liverpool couple of weeks ago, playing a game, and then got taken to Everton game.

The feedback was that it was a jaw dropping experience, ………..

There are I think 14 expansion or relocation projects for English clubs.

We are getting left behing in all things.

  2. Our payback need for

Capital projects has been one of my personal gripes with those who run our finances.

  3. Saint Stivs – world class at everything we do . . . except when it actually means doing anything.

  4. Any suggestions of what ‘vision or star’ these malcontent groups have in mind or are they still just on about sacking a board who will almost all be leaving as soon as they can get out of dodge anyway ?

For me I really don’t care what crap various factions are on about but personally I would like Celtic support aligned and backing the team to win the league and cup.

People wasting effort about a structure which is going to change and sowing seeds of disagreement amongst us does little good. Change will happen and hopefully it will be for good.

The future may not be as good as we have enjoyed for 20 years but it starts tonight at Aberdeen.

Listened to Homebhoys other day, one of the contributors follows the ladies team, and she said the users of Barrowfiield are loving the whole experience, and the amount of professionalism at the venue is fantastic, with only one caveat , they wish there was a stand to allow the matches to get supporters in.

I had heard when foloowing the development that planning permission for a stand was not given with the reason being access for a few thousand was not acheivable. We should go back on that and ask what would it take to allow for it.

I feel the same for Lennoxtown, but the access up there is diabolical. But we could ask for help by the respectivew councils.

Interesting re Rennie at the All Blacks. I got to know him when at Glasgow. Ange always reminded me a bit of him. Although his rugby was a bit more structured.

He was working with a really poor set of tools with Australia. It will be fascinating to see how he gets on as there is a fair bit to do to catch up with the Boks France and probably Engerland when they finally get it right.

    I totally agree re Barrowfield.

Even 3000 or so such as Heriot Watt Orium has would be fantastic and generate great atmosphere.

Maybe just not seen as priority but it feels that there is £20m over 10 years left on the floor right there.

    An escalator up to 444?

Which would give the Board the opportunity not only to build one but to send a message to all dissenters…

et pour encourager les autres…..Maybe even with a European bent…..so to speak….

Or maybe it’s New Zealand actually just blowing them away. 90/0 after 7 overs chasing 170. Wow.

B78 – I’m not very familiar with him but your comparison with Ange in the way he comes across is spot on.

Although lacking detailed specifics, I thought the framework for his hiring seemed very thorough. NZ Rugby were also very quick to get rid of Scott Robinson who they felt wasn’t taking the team in the right direction despite having a decent record.

I’m sure DD could learn a few things from them.

I’m hoping Aberdeen really have one eye on a far far bigger game for them at the weekend

  14. SAINT STIVS on 4TH MARCH 2026 3:20 PM , and in further response to AN TEARMANN

I’m not sure what any of the groups are capable of achieving, but I know that there has to be a compelling reason for the board to embrace the need for change, and this is not easily achieved through dissent and external forces alone.

The CST, CSL, and CSTA are all interested in acquiring/controlling a shareholding. While the first two are framed similarly, Haughey has obvious wealth that he is willing to use as described, and has creatively proposed to attach this to a group of season ticket holders that subscribe to his program. All of them are ultimately seeking to represent/control a bloc of shares and the voting rights, which becomes significant to the board once at the 5% threshold which permits them to call general meetings.

The Celtic Fans Collective are doing what they can to represent the views of many supporter groups, but they ultimately have limited authority. They wield nothing more than the threat of protests or disruption, which could certainly manifest as financially detrimental to the club, and should not be ignored. Even so, it’s an uneasy and fragile position from which to negotiate or “represent” needs/expectations, much less demand change.

I reflect on my personal experience running businesses with unionized workforces, and consider the nature of that relationship as largely productive. Having a handful of people representing the interests of thousands made light work of negotiating and communicating terms for labor agreements and such. My point being, I see these groups as an opportunity for Celtic. They could be proactive, even assist these groups in their goals, and create proper fan/shareholder based bodies to liaise with on a formal basis.

The board really needs to recognize that there is a choice to make; continue to resist and fight the growing sentiment of the support, or embrace the opportunity to make Celtic better together.

The one condemns them to conflict and inevitable decline, while the other represents hope and a way to harness the energy and loyalty of that support.

I’ve worked this into several comments, “harmonize the ambitions of the support with the expectations of the shareholders”, and I continue to believe that this is where conversations should be started. It feels like we don’t actually know what the major shareholders are seeking from their investment, yet at the same time, the fans make it very obvious what we want for our pound.

  18. ST STIVS and BURNLEY78 – agree on the potential for Barrowfield.

The EPL teams all see the bigger picture, and their development projects are as much for survival as anything else. They need to spend at the highest possible levels in order to build teams that can just keep them in the EPL, let alone have ambitions to win anything. They see the eye watering money being spent by Championship clubs desperate to ascend to the land of milk and honey, and they feel the pressure.

In short, they are taking the business of business seriously because a club can use revenues from “related” projects to boost their baseline when calculating permitted football squad budgets under UEFA’s FSR.

I have a friend who is a director for the leading architect in the sports stadia and conference center space. They do massive projects all over the world, and there is increasingly emphasis on multi-use, multi-purpose solutions. Expect to see more hotels, leisure facilities, retail and entertainment venues attached to stadia.

Incidentally, the company I mention did speak to Celtic, and it was not encouraging.
