No disrespect to Falkirk, but I was delighted Hibs overturned the three goal deficit on Saturday’s Scottish Cup semi-final. It was almost a miraculous victory for a team in bad need of a miracle. Things were not always this way.
Celtic and Hibernian meet in next month’s Scottish Cup final sixty years and six days after the teams met in the Coronation Cup final. Back then Hibs were hot favourites. Celtic had won only two leagues in the previous quarter century whereas Hibs, with their Famous Five forward-line, won three leagues in the previous six seasons, losing a fourth on goal average.
These were hard times to be a Celtic fan. Two league titles in the 20s, two in the 30s and one in the 50s (a double winning team in 1954), ensured that a couple of generations of fans survived on little more than folklore. So the team who won the Coronation Cup in 1953, before securing that double a year later, had a significant impact on fans then, which you’ll easily learn if you speak to one.
Charlie Tully, Bobby Evans, Bobby Collins, Bertie Peacock and Willie Fernie all played in the Coronation Cup final, as did Neily Mochan and a man called Stein, the captain. A 117,000 crowd of Celtic and Hibs fans ensured Hampden was covered in banners of green.
Apparently Hibs were by far the stronger team but Neily Mochan scored a cracker in the first half and Johnny Bonnar played the game of his life in goal before Jimmy Walsh scored a late second.
“Said Phillip to Liz watch the Celts don’t step in…….”

Scottish football, just don’t get it
monteblanco-I posted a while ago that Barry Hearn could possibly be the man to lead Scottish Football out of this mess.Look at what he’s done with snooker and how big darts is now ,anyone who can get Sky to show live fishing and get 500,000 viewers is a genius in my book, the current mob are hopeless.
Someone mentioned ticket prices too high, BFDJ just about sh&t a melon! ‘Clubs cannot afford to reduce prices!’. That is, one club cannot afford a reduction!

STATEMENT FROM STEPHEN THOMPSON, DUNDEE UNITED CHAIRMAN.
Today saw Scottish Football miss a massive opportunity to move the game forward. The package that was voted on was a balanced package with many items that would have breathed new life into the game. The proposals would have attracted new sponsors and advertisers and, more importantly, encouraged more fans to attend the exciting and vibrant spectacle we are producing on the park, as was witnessed in the two William Hill Scottish Cup semi finals at the weekend.
I have stated publicly before that the proposals that were presented were not perfect, but that there were enough positive changes in the package for the overall good of the game. Merging two league bodies was a massive step forward, an all through distribution model supported other full time clubs in Scotland, and the introduction of play offs and a pyramid system, would have rewarded ambition at all levels of the senior game. The restructuring proposals also brought more meaningful games during the season with clubs always having something to play for.
At Dundee United we were not happy with a number of issues in the proposals, but we preferred instead to look at the undoubted benefits of the overall package for the game as a whole. It has taken years for clubs to agree a way forward and many individuals and groups have given up a considerable amount of their own time to bring the proposals forward. In doing so, they gained the support of the vast majority of SPL clubs and most of the Division One clubs. Indeed, approximately 90% of full time clubs in Scotland supported the proposals and all SPL clubs were given ample opportunity to express any concerns during the many months of consultation.
In an attempt to overcome some late concerns, concessions were made on the day with regard to voting of 11-1, but these were not even allowed to be amended; never mind voted on!
Despite all of this, two clubs today decided to vote in a certain way and my belief now is that it will be many years before other proposals backed by so many will reach the table again.
As a family who have rightly or wrongly injected £5.6 million into one club, and not an individual who is taking huge amounts out of the game in salary, it’s now time for football supporters throughout Scotland to ask questions.
I personally believed that the proposals were a major step forward, one league body would have been progress and brought sponsors and advertisers to a new and exciting product, the new league structure would have brought excitement and meaningful games and a financial distribution model that would support all clubs in Scotland and in particular all full time clubs.
There are no other proposals on the table and none are likely in the near future.
It is now time to concentrate on all that is positive on the park. Many Scottish clubs, including Dundee United, have a vibrant youth policy and we have also seen many exciting games throughout the season, especially in recent weeks. Our own club still has much to play for this season and the outlook for next season excites me.
I now propose to work even harder at Dundee United and build a better club for our supporters. We have an exciting new manager in Jackie McNamara and I believe we have a bright future ahead of us.
Baku/Black Isle Celt,
You may well be right in what you claim, with regard to the feelings of the fans and reconstruction but today most Celtic fans are convinced that St Mirren simply voted to help the deady bears, not to respect the views of the fans. Therefore, we feel cheated. because we see it another attempt to propel the deid team back into the top flight of Scottish Football.

Absolutely spot on …….. All greengo is looking for out of this is the justification for hiking sevco SB prices next season, if they survive until then….LOL

Agree, Doncaster was impressive in his handling of that sevco loving trumpet McIntyre on Sportsound. He actually gave a little away tonight without actual saying anything but I don’t think he believes it will be the status quo next season. He seems to be handling himself with the confidence that the true power brokers in Scottish football, i.e. Us, are backing him fully.
I don’t think any reconstruction will take place this year, sevco in div2 and hopefully relegation for st mirren, wonder when we will get the sevco /saints fundraising game

Interesting that PL has given support to Doncaster.
It should be ND given support to PL after all PL is running our game :)
To create an SPL 2, would there not need to be an 11-1 vote in favour of this?
If so.
Surely Celtic could get at least 1 other current SPL club to veto such a vote.
Whilst my contacts told me weeks ago that the plan would be an attempt to form an SPL 2.
Surely Celtic can scupper this if they wish to.

I love your thinking and agree some kind of new vision is required…
Barry Hearn? I always think he was the guy that got shot but he isn’t.
Aye, a Barry Hearn type figure is exactly right.
hen1rik-Silly me :}
Andy Goram is an absolute bell end of a zombie.

Surely the “concerns” that St.Mirren and Ross Co. have would be shared by other clubs who are in similar situations.
Caley, St.Johnstone, Kilmarnock, Motherwell, etc., are in the same situation as the two No voters, therefore should have shared their concerns.
If so, why did those other clubs think that, on balance, the deal would benefit them?
What football or business factors caused those two clubs to think differently.
Short of libeling them, those clubs that have made statements have discounted football logic from the equation.
Ross County stand beside St.Mirren under a large shadow.

I think Celtic would be in favour of an SPL2.
Watch Junior Soprano’s trial.
The jury voted 11-1 guilty.
A unanimous decision was required to convict.
Uncle June bought the juror.
MMmmmmm.

The statement confirms what I have been saying all day. Celtic were prepared to give up £1M after the success of the CL to help the rest. The offer is off the table now.
St Mirren or Sevco can give up the £1M the next time…
Kayal33
You could be correct.
I would hope not.
TT
Kayal33
If it goes ahead then you will be correct in my book.
Celtic could stop it quite easily.

Can’t believe that there isn’t one single caller who thinks that chuckles is in this up to his oxters! Not one caller about the ‘independent inquiry’ into sevco.
BFDJ can vaguely remember….how sevcovian!
Good evening friends.

We are very disappointed to learn of the
outcome of today’s SPL vote on league
reconstruction. Like many involved in
Scottish football, Spartans believe that
something significant is needed if we are
to safeguard and develop the game in this
country. As an ambitious club we had,
obviously, welcomed the idea of a
pyramid structure and the prospect that
our national leagues would become
inclusive rather than exclusive. We had
believed that other clubs felt the same
and that this time action would
accompany the rhetoric.
However, while this decision was
disappointing, like all forward-thinking
clubs, we will continue to look for
opportunities to progress and strengthen
the sport for all and endeavour to work
with like-minded clubs to make it more
equitable.
Since Snyde employed BFDJ they made their intentions clear as to what audience they wished to attract, why are you listening? further more please dont tell us here!

Stephen Thompson must mean Charles Green.
Didn’t both Celtic & Aberdeen back the Henry McLeish report recommendations of a return to a 10 team SPL, but there wasn’t enough backing from others to make it happen. Wonder if they have been playing the long game, and are about to get their way??
Alright guys doing a bit of clearing out and have a load of old football annuals 50s through to 80s. Scottish football books and Playing for Celtic1969 then 3,4,9,13. If anyone would like them get in touch. Not looking to sell just someone who would appreciate them can have them. Could even put donation to Oscar or Kano charities.
Mick
I don’t think Peter Lawell would have to look any further than Steven Thompson for another vote to stop an SPL2.
As i have said over the last couple of days ,that has been the alternative plan of some.
It won’t get off the ground if Celtic don’t want it to.
