Stein, Famous Five, Lizzie and Phil

527

No disrespect to Falkirk, but I was delighted Hibs overturned the three goal deficit on Saturday’s Scottish Cup semi-final.  It was almost a miraculous victory for a team in bad need of a miracle.  Things were not always this way.

Celtic and Hibernian meet in next month’s Scottish Cup final sixty years and six days after the teams met in the Coronation Cup final.  Back then Hibs were hot favourites.  Celtic had won only two leagues in the previous quarter century whereas Hibs, with their Famous Five forward-line, won three leagues in the previous six seasons, losing a fourth on goal average.

These were hard times to be a Celtic fan.  Two league titles in the 20s, two in the 30s and one in the 50s (a double winning team in 1954), ensured that a couple of generations of fans survived on little more than folklore.  So the team who won the Coronation Cup in 1953, before securing that double a year later, had a significant impact on fans then, which you’ll easily learn if you speak to one.

Charlie Tully, Bobby Evans, Bobby Collins, Bertie Peacock and Willie Fernie all played in the Coronation Cup final, as did Neily Mochan and a man called Stein, the captain.  A 117,000 crowd of Celtic and Hibs fans ensured Hampden was covered in banners of green.

Apparently Hibs were by far the stronger team but Neily Mochan scored a cracker in the first half and Johnny Bonnar played the game of his life in goal before Jimmy Walsh scored a late second.

“Said Phillip to Liz watch the Celts don’t step in…….”

    Natastoola mentioned Frankie Bhoy earlier.

I remember travelling back from the Dortmund defeat. A match when Celtic were crying out for a striker. We had chances a-plenty in the Westfalenstadion.

Anyway on the road back, some kind lorry driver held up the back page of a newspaper to reveal the imminent purchase of Frank.

What a player he was for Celtic: tireless, passion and ability.

  2. Celtic_First,

Just checked soccerbase.com – it too doesn’t show another Cup yellow for Kayal.

So perhaps he is not suspended? I can’t see a single booking carrying forward from a previous season.

  3. Maybe a bit cruel but this brightened up my monday mornin..

I work in a bank (i know i know boooo!) and this mornin a letter landed on my desk from the local sevco supporters club

The letter explains that they are currently struggling financially and wont be able to pay this years fees. They ask if there is any way they cud have them wavered or they will have to look to move their account elsewhere as the account will become unmanagable..

Wat is it with that club and banks?

    B-)

I think we should be told … certainly before Beram goes home to Israel for an early holiday.

James Forrest is exceptional when he has the ball in wide positions but his off the ball work is very poor particularly tracking back. He offers the full back no defensive support whatsoever. If he could work a bit harder he could become a top player.

I thought Gary Hooper was poor yesterday. Didn’t see him doing much off the ball to help the team. Hope he enjoys a Premiership relegation struggle next season.

  8. Anyone remember a row of houses that needed demolished?

    Naw? Me neither.

I heard of the story of people in nearby tenements that demanded compensation from Celtic as they couldn’t recieve a TV picture when on of the new stands went up.

Fergus asked the complainants to pop along to Celtic Park with their TV licences for a chat about the problem……….Nobody turned up :-)

Don’t remember the club building anything on the resulting wasteland though.

  11. I was a secondary school teacher in the 80’s, now retired. As in many schools, all over Scotland, myself and two colleagues used to take three age groups for football training two or three times a week.

On a Sat we always had a game which we Ref’d if at home or travelled to distant points in the region on a hired bus. We also took our best players to Regional trials and also National trials up at Herriot Watt Univ.

One of our boys played in the same Under 16’s team as Paul McStay and he was persuaded to sign for Ipswich by Bobby Robson, I was told the family were given a new house as a signing on fee.

Times were good as was the standard of football.

Thatcher stopped all this as all the teachers went on a work to rule and suddenly the supply of talented home grown players to clubs dried up.

12-12-18 #SPL proposal has been rejected according to @BBCAlLamont

  15. St Mirren and Ross County vote against the reconstruction proposals so it looks like its status quo again for next season.

No doubt they will try to rush through plans for an SPL2 but I would presume that would require 11-1 vote and I think Aberdeen and Celtic are opposed, maybe others too.

  17. BCW I was working at the time with fans of Ipswich, Norwich and West Ham.

I went to some of the games and was caught up in their drama.

This is what Butcher said – It’s not right. A club like Ipswich should not be allowed to go down. It’s wrong.

Even then it seemed a strange thing to say. With his “should not be allowed to happen” mode of thought he must have found his spiritual Nirvana at Ibrox.

When I recounted this episode to Celtic supporters in Glasgow it made Frank’s encounters with him all the sweeter.

Not sure why you think SPL2 would now be proposed, was that not the fallback if SFL clubs rejected the deal?

Now since they will not even have to vote on the issue, can’t see why an SPL2 would be rushed through.

Gonnae be funny when St Mirren and Ross County get relegated in the future and squeal about the lack of money in the lower division.

Had enough effing about,we need to have sensible and hard-headed people in charge of Scottish football.

  25. Condolences to Lennybhoy’s Uncle Pat.

On the surface of it, it looks like we have just lost another off field battle in the reconstruction vote. Yon deid club is still wielding influence beyond its economic power, it seems.
