Stein, Famous Five, Lizzie and Phil

No disrespect to Falkirk, but I was delighted Hibs overturned the three goal deficit on Saturday’s Scottish Cup semi-final.  It was almost a miraculous victory for a team in bad need of a miracle.  Things were not always this way.

Celtic and Hibernian meet in next month’s Scottish Cup final sixty years and six days after the teams met in the Coronation Cup final.  Back then Hibs were hot favourites.  Celtic had won only two leagues in the previous quarter century whereas Hibs, with their Famous Five forward-line, won three leagues in the previous six seasons, losing a fourth on goal average.

These were hard times to be a Celtic fan.  Two league titles in the 20s, two in the 30s and one in the 50s (a double winning team in 1954), ensured that a couple of generations of fans survived on little more than folklore.  So the team who won the Coronation Cup in 1953, before securing that double a year later, had a significant impact on fans then, which you’ll easily learn if you speak to one.

Charlie Tully, Bobby Evans, Bobby Collins, Bertie Peacock and Willie Fernie all played in the Coronation Cup final, as did Neily Mochan and a man called Stein, the captain.  A 117,000 crowd of Celtic and Hibs fans ensured Hampden was covered in banners of green.

Apparently Hibs were by far the stronger team but Neily Mochan scored a cracker in the first half and Johnny Bonnar played the game of his life in goal before Jimmy Walsh scored a late second.

“Said Phillip to Liz watch the Celts don’t step in…….”

  1. Hearts chief executive David Southern continued:

“There’s been compromise for the last seven months, even up to the very last minute today. There was quite a significant compromise made by Celtic to try to get this over the finishing line.

“However, when it got down to whites of the eyes time, there were certain clubs who were not prepared to make that move.”

  2. If Celtic were left with the casting vote on sevco being parachuted into the top division, just how would such a vote be cast? My money would be on Yes.

    Thanks for the clarification.

  4. So Gilmour has been outed it was not the 11-1 vote he was against like he has been telling anyone that would listen.

  5. I’d like an SPL2 with no relegation to, or promotion from, the SFL. A completely separate league.

30,00Sevco Shares dumped for 61p before lunch. Chickens & Roost comes to mind. If there is any talk at all re Sevco being parachuted into an SPL2 it will be take to the streets time.

Spot on mate , we need to fight this all the way .

Hope i am wrong but if the powers that be want Sevco in the second tier that is what will happen. The Scottish spring will not be allowed to happen again. The wishes of the fans will be ignored. That is unless of course Sevco FC 2012 are placed in administration before SPL2 can be formed.

I would be very surprised if Celtic would vote for Rangers getting into the top league or even an SPL2 if it came to that. What in the past year would have changed their minds?

If they are worried about falling attendances and think having a strong Rangers in the SPL will help with this, then we as a support have to shoulder some of the blame for not turning up in sufficient numbers.

  11. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

It might actually be better this way. With 12-12-18 they would have argued (however ridiculously) that it was unfair for them not to get promoted. With an SPL 2 with invitations it will be 100% clear that they are favouring them for no other reason than they are them.

  12. Time for another breakaway. Take the 10 that voted yes along with the top 9 in Div 1 & QOS as Div 2 champions and go 2 leagues of 10. Let St Mirren and Ross County rot in the lower leagues with the zombies. No trickle down money, all cash stays with top 20.

Our declining support to blame ? That may be an unpalatable truth, but truth, nevertheless.

  16. Gordon_J,

I disagree, simply because some clubs will cherry pick what they want, others will do likewise, therefore there would never be agreement. Which parts are important and need to go through now, and which can wait.

It was all or nothing for good reason.

I think Gilmour wanted the pic and mix option, that is where problems began.

It will be a long time before consensus such as we had in January will be seen again.

You would hope there is a contingency plan from the majority given that it was obvious from the public utterances that there was a good chance of two clubs voting against….

  21. Seems that Celtic were giving most up. Approx. £1m per season, change in voting structure from 11-1 to 9-3. What was in it for us??

  22. Celtic vote for Sevco FC in the top league! The board would consider self immolation or seppuku as preferable to facing the wrath of the Celtic support if they even considered such a thing. They may not be able to prevent it but happening but should at the very least be seen by the Celtic support as doing their upmost to foil it.

  23. Attendance figures for these two games could be interesting:

    Ross County V Celtic on the 5th of May;

St Mirren V Aberdeen on the 11th of May. Will the respective Chairmen do a Chuckles and ask their fans to boycott the games in question?

  26. Not convinced Celtic wanted this reconstruction model to go ahead. Well chosen words by Mr Lawwell at the weekend.

  27. maybe the fact that Ross Co. didn’t renege on what they said they would do is saving them from the early flack.

Not enough though to save them from a boycott, post split, if the away support have the heart for it.
