Stellar career with recent patchwork of clubs

500

In the space of three days, Celtic have gone from having a goalkeeper deficit to looking like they are sorted for the coming campaign, and possibly for a few years to come.  Kasper Schmeichel will fill the leading role this season with Viljami Sinisalo as understudy.

Kasper is four years older than Joe Hart was when he joined in 2021.  Whereas Joe only played around 40 games in the four seasons before then, Kasper has been first choice everywhere he has been for 15 years.

While at Leicester two years ago, Brendan Rodgers sold then 36-year-old Kasper to Nice for £1m.  After one season in France, Nice promoted their reserve keeper to the top spot and released Kasper, who spent last season at Anderlecht.

That recent patchwork of clubs is the only concern in a stellar career for the Denmark captain.  At Celtic he will be required to cope with high pressure environments like cup finals and Champions League games, while helping to develop the career of the man who will hopefully succeed him.  His form at the Euros suggests he is ready for the task.

  1. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    EKBHOY on 20TH JULY 2024 2:58 PM

    Re Adam Idah ….

    Yip.

To me it looks like a very blunt shakedown.

Fair enough. The player is under contract.

“How high Celtic will go?” doesn’t actually interest me much.

“What date we walk away irrevocably and go to plan B” (in full sight of Norwich) is a factor.

  2. BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL on 20TH JULY 2024 3:10 PM

    ……

Norwich’s need for cash is greater than our need for Adam plenty more fish in the sea if Norwich don’t want to play ball.

  3. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Ekbhoy – cheers.

Have heard tell of Norwich’s financial woes but don’t know the details.

Plus, if Adam wants Celtic and only Celtic, selling club’s position is immediately weaker.

On the face of it a financial game or chicken (aren’t most transfers?)

If Celtic have a plan for Adam’s acquisition … and this is just unsophisticated foolishness by Norwich for the gallery …. then fair enough.

Paradoxically – because Adam has had five months already in the Brendan system … we don’t actually need him in early to acclimatise.

A completely new striker needs to come in earlier.

Can the guy Conway actually play? I’d never seen or heard of him till his name pitched up in the Scotland squad.

If he isn’t good enough to displace the guy Adams, whom I think is pretty hopeless from what I’ve seen of him, I’d rather we look elsewhere.

  5. I don’t figure how Norwich can be viewed as being disrespectful by having one of their contracted players start a preseason game, just because he is wanted by another club (who have not offered the fee required to get the deal done).

By that reckoning, Celtic would be disrespectful starting Matt in a preseason friendly.

  6. Just read that ukraine leader wants our permission to use the long range rockets he bought from us to be used to attack inside Russia, ffs.

So, by that logic, I buy a BMW but have to get their permission to drive, world is nuts

    Agreed.

I’d like to think that any thoughts of signing Conway would be for a nominal fee, and with the intention of having him as 3rd choice centre forward.

    Call me Gerry

    I agree.

I can see that Idah is a good target as he looks to me to be the style of striker that Brendan likes. He has more pace than Oh, so I would see him as an upgrade on Oh.

I would have said having Kyogo, Idah and Oh challenging for the striker position would have seen us well covered.

I would be happy to be proved wrong, but I think Conway would be very much a retrograde step as a replacement for Idah or Oh.

  15. Sorry I missed your post there GG. Yip.

UEFA force Celtic to play the game behind closed doors as a punishment after Celtic fans misbehaviour at Old Trafford against Rapid Vienna.

Celtic estimate that they lost £250,000 in lost gate receipts.

Only 170 people permitted in the ground.Even Celtic players and officials needed tickets to enter the stadium. This creates an eery, unreal atmosphere.

Press, radio and TV people were limited and only a couple of minutes highlights were allowed to be shown on news programmes that night.

Game kicked off at 2.00pm in the afternoon when the majority of Celtic supporters were at work.

Stewards and police kept a tight cordon around the ground to prevent fas coming anywhere near the stadium.

Atletico reached the final and were beaten 3-0 by Dynamo Kyiv in Lyon.

  16. Let me get this straight

There are those on here who have never heard of a player

    But dont rate him…….

    Ye couldnae make it up….

    And ye dont have to….

  17. garygillespieshamstring on

    CelticMac

On the basis of him not being able to get picked for Scotland, I assume he is no better than Adams.

If he were better than Adams I would assume he would be in the Scotland team.

It is my opinion that Adam’s is not good enough for Celtic.

On that basis, there is no evidence to suggest that Conway would be good enough for Celtic.

I was asking if anyone knew anything of him from seeing him play that would suggest he might be a good signing for us.

Idah and Oh have already shown they can score for us.

It seems to me that the only reason he has been suggested as a player for Celtic is his late addition to a poor Scotland pool when all the other possibilities were injured.

My opinion is that if we are bringing in a number two striker, it should be someone at a better level than Bristol City.

I am just curious as to why he has suddenly come to our attention.

For me, he would definitely be a “project signing”when we need a proven goalscorer.

  18. ⛳️ 🏌️‍♀️ great viewing today the weather making it tough for a few players.

  19. !!Bada Bing!! on

Conway is 21 years old, scored 10 in 39 games last season, in a better league than we play in,a decent prospect, for a 300k cross border transfer fee, definitely worth a punt IMO

  20. garygillespieshamstring

You haven’t seen Tommy Conway play, ergo you are not really in a position to pass any kind of judgement.

As for Steve Clarke, well I wanted him sacked months ago. Another who does not believe results matter, one win in thirteen might suggest that they do, not least given that the win was against the mighty Gibraltar. Clarke was the worst manager and had the worst team of twenty four in the Euros. Only played two up front in the last fifteen minutes of our last match. His future is in the past.

Conway is 21 going 22, had a good season in the Championship, the most competitive league in Europe, and one of the best, had a reasonable scoring record and here’s the thing, is mobile, good off the ball, and pretty good in the air. I think he would be a good signing then again I’ve seen him play more than a few times. Check out both his goals in the FA Cup over two games against West Ham last season, there is a player there. Could be a good signing, especially if Adam Idah does not return.

  21. I enjoyed Maestro`s 8:50 am post but the attendance at today`s game suggests other Huns don`t feel the same as the author of Maesrto`s link does:

`The announcer states there are 56,574 fans in attendance `

  22. PS Sorry to those who feel the Huns shouldn`t be mentioned on here but they did lose 0-2 so I thought it would be OK to mention how many saw that happening :-))

  23. Whilst I’m loathed to put too much scrutiny on preseason games, especially with regard to results, you can assess individual ability and body language to a certain extent.

From watching the majority of the game between Man U – Sevco, there were some good things to see from the performance of our main domestic challenger.

The new left back didn’t show up well. Amad Diablo had him rinsed a few times, including when opening the scoring. There was also a moment in the second half were he misplaced a pass, and his body language was to react by flapping his arms as if to blame his team mate. Good to see.

Cortes was another poor performer – so much so that he was the only player hooked at HT (all 9 other outfield players were subbed after 75 mins). He also displayed poor body language when a pass intended for him went astray. Shrugged his shoulders in a lazy fashion and didn’t make any attempt to track the Man U player nearest to him, who took possession, ran forward untracked, and made the assist for the first goal. Then, in 2nd half, Sevco had a clean breakaway. Dessers out wide right, crossed into the box for the on running Matondo. Put a little too much on cross, ball went out wide left which Matondo ran after. Desserts? Rather than make a run, stopped motionless with arms outstretched for a good 5-10 secs, playing to the gallery as if to say “I did my bit, it’s his fault”. Again, good to see the body language displayed.

Connor Barron looked like a Dons level player wearing a Sevco strip (granted it’s early to judge, but he doesn’t look an upgrade on what they had before).

Yes, I know this is a Celtic blog. But it’s good to see your only domestic challenger for the league have any sort of misfortune 😁

    I will have a look.

Just wondering what the evidence was that he is a good player as I knew nothing about him.

Obviously if he signs I would be 100% behind him and hope he does well. When Celtic sign a player I don’t make snap judgments on them based upon a few brief appearances.

Just a bit of a concern for me if we were buying a “punt” as a deputy for Kyogo. I’d have preferred us to have kept Oh until we had another proven striker in place.

I don’t really watch English football so I don’t know much about players playing in the lower divisions.
