Spartak Moscow have appointed Valery Karpin as caretaker manager. The former Russian international has had an active role in the club since 2008, variously as chief executive and manager. He took control of the first team when he replaced Michael Laudrup in 2009 until Unai Emeri’s appointment this summer when Karpin returned to his executive role.
He is an experienced pair of hands who is likely to stabilise things after the spirit had been drained from the club. Spartak are already out of Europe but will pose no less a threat than Inverness when they arrive at Celtic Park next midweek.
Neil Lennon will not be particularly concerned by the impact of Celtic’s defeat by Inverness on Saturday on the league table but the experience will still be arresting. Celtic have won three of five away games in Europe this season, losing the other two by a single goal, but there is clearly still work to do when faced with a home challenge in the SPL. Valery Karpin will be keen to prove he can exploit this.
Celtic have established credentials in three areas this season: they can defend adroitly when setup to do so, they are a major threat at set-pieces and they are an effective counter-attacking side. Any other attributes remain a matter for conjecture.
The first instruction against Spartak should be ‘stick to what you’re good at’.

Sitting having a beer in Sai Gon reading CQN, and the Celtic song just comes on the sound system. Had to blast out a few verses.
Hail Hail Celtic.

I was at that Who gig at Celtic Park
Was a good day out, Alex Harvey stole the day for me
The Green’s Playhouse closed in 1973 and re-opened in Sept 1973 as The aplool
First gig in the new venue was Johnny Cash – 2 nights
Followed the next week by The Rolling stones – Goat’s Head Soup Tour
First time of 5 I have seen the stones live
oopps
As “The Apollo” I have no idea what the aplool is :-)

It’s all tongue in cheek, gentle ribbing.
Truth be told,I obviously don’t like it much-though each to their own-but it’s too strong for me!
Gotta be careful wi my intake when I’m driving come midnight, and the 4% stuff works in that respect.
Had two pints of Peroni over the last few months-whether I liked it or not was incidental, cos at that price I certainly wisnae gonna spit it out!

To all you old timers talking about the rock scene in the 70s etc
Here’s one: Who put the boot in at Celtic Park in the year of Our Lord 1976?
Eh? Eh?

I went to the one at the Valley, Charlton FC the same summer.
There was a mini riot – Chelsea fans probably!
The Who were brilliant!
…. and the SAHB of course!
HH!!
FC Zombie needs BBC Zombie Shortbread.
And vice versa.
A pity really; I thought Jim Spence had a chance to make a change but the ETT result means Jabba returns to his place of dishonour.
Bloody hell, they have put it on for a second time. If anyone is in sai gon and wants some Celtic tunes head down to the Japanese area in district 1.

Being in a bar with a mob of partying Hells Angels who were mad on meta amphetamine was way worse than the time I made the decision to travel on the tube to a derby game at Ibrox [ boarding at Partick ]
Tourtenay for me one of the many great things about the web is the anonymity.
It means in debate one has to respond to what is said. Not who said it.
Ad hominem replies are seen for what they are.

Brace yourselves for more.
Tallybhoy, don’t know why but that made me laugh out loud there – getting a slap fae the missus tae the shock of passers-by. Must be something wrong with me!
So it’s true then, wummin slap…..and Allez LeCoist!

The old fellow in the park was just wondering whose wife’s bottom you’d just pinched.
Bringing my Lady to the Brazen Head wasn’t my wisest move ever, particularly when a row broke out outside as we were leaving, since then changed my Glasgow local to The Scotia Bar.

The truth will out.
He is hanging on by his fingertips-can’t believe his luck that the decision came out the way it did,and has been spun accordingly.
It gives him one last chance to use his influence-and let us not kid ourselves,he does have it in Scotland, which of itself speaks volumes-to put a tin lid on it,discredit any dissent as petty or bullying.
Faffin’ ironic,if you think about it.

Yes – I drink gin on occasions!

Tallybhoy:
“Crowd behaviour at Glasgow and Swansea appears to have been far better then that at the Charlton show, although The Streetwalkers were bottled off at Celtic Park.”
That made me laugh for some reason.
Don’t remember that happening myself, but, as you know, there are always some grumpy baskets at Parkheid!!!

I did that,meant to be meeting my mate-coming from Edinburgh-in the Devil’s Elbow,then The Wenches’Bar,IIRC.
We had a contingency plan for me planking the ticket if he was late-as usual-but I hung on a tad much.
Buncha Rangers fans I was talking to suggested taking the Underground as no way would the bus get me there in time.
Well,no scarf,no problem,I thought. No singing,BIG problem,as it turned out!
The carriage was rocking when some eejit noticed I wasn’t joining in.
“Haw,you,why you no’ singin’?”
“Don’t think you’ll like my songs…”
Amazes me how I get away with it,tbh.
My Guardian Angel has been on 24/7 loony alert for nigh on 50 years, and surely needs a rest.

Pleasing to read your reply to post.
Can see that you do/did appreciate the Stones and I would agree that their early days were their most productive and exciting but if countless numbers of fans are still prepared to pay to watch them it’s fine by me. If I could have afforded to go to the O2 I would have.
I took my then 22 year old son to see them the last time they were at the SECC and he really enjoyed the experience. If someone had told me I would be doing that when I first saw them in Glasgow (Greens Playhouse I think) when they topped a bill that also had Ike & Tina Turner and the Yardbirds on the show I would never have beleived them.
The last couple of weeks on BBC2 have had some very good old and new Stones shows on, hope you managed to catch them.

Ornithologists and Christina Hendricks ogglers alike will be alarmed to know that insects have been identified as responsible for the spread of a virus that has very significant adverse impact on great tits.
Praecepta.
Unicorn Leesure, now there is a name from the past, are they still a going concern and didn’t they run a number of clubs in Glasgow among them the old Maestro’s off Sucheihall Street.

your comment regarding who watches or doesn’t watch the BBC does not make any sense, if we just look at the news alone, if that is not the biggest load of right wing state drivel then what is, it has nothing to do with right or left it is all about value for money and the BBC do not give it. I would say that their drama programmes are second to none but still not worth the licence fee, throw it all open break up the monopoly.
Thank goodness that’s my Christmas shopping done for another year, well apart from the Internet bits n bobs. Hot bath, cold cider and away to read back.

Can you remember if there was any booing way back then?!
There was at Charlton – among other things!

Oh, for reporters like Alex Thomson in Aul’ Scotia !
He takes a breather from the stink of Syria and the Gaza Strip, to bring a breath of fresh air to the Govan basket case.

Leave it to the free market and you will end up with trash.

Really Great Tits

These days you can get arrested for taking a bottle of water into Parkhead, but back then we were carrying cases of beer into Celtic Park! Classic rocknroll day out Glasgow style. SAHB were, well, sensational, Little Feat brilliant and the Who pretty much at their best. Noted some the contributors mentioning the light show, lasers did not work too well In Glasgow’s June summerlight skies. Incidentally, also saw the Stones at the Apollo just a month earlier, May 12 if I remember rightly. Same night as the European Cup Final (Bayern-St Etienne) at Hampden, so, hard to believe but the pubs were open to all hours courtesy of the Council!

I have to agree with Ernie. BBC News channel, for instance is largely preferable to SKY,FOX,CNN,etc.
Their original programming content is quality-driven,rather than ratings/sponsor driven.
When many of us pay a grand a year for SKY,and barely watch it,apart from the football and the occasional high-quality import,£160 or so is a pittance.
To prove it…

I think you are speaking from pure dogma and not common sense, the free market has its problems but some good does come out of it, as for the BBC the majority of it is trash, yes every now and then they will produce a little gem but it is rare.
Just look at what is available on line and no licence fee required.
The BBC is state run and what they feed us is what they want us to hear.

On the concert ticket theme, my first ever gig was Pink Floyd at the Usher Hall in 1974. They played Wish you Were Here (all of it) in the first half followed by the whole of Dark Side of the Moon. Then came back on to play Echoes as an encore.
Ticket price was £1.40. I’ve still got the ticket. In fact I’ve still got the tickets for every concert I’ve been to, including the Rolling Stones at the Apollo in 1975.
