Sticking it to the man, cautionary Swedish tales

1347

Absolutely delighted for St Johnstone, who recorded one of the finest aggregate results by a Scottish club in European football in the last 30 years.  My brother was speaking to a Saints player this week, who told him the successful strategy and drive came from chairman, Steve Brown, a fact which Hibernian would do well to ponder today.

Malmo’s 0-7 victory at Easter Road yesterday was chastening ahead of our game against fellow Swedes, Elfsborg on Wednesday.  Celtic are in a remarkably strong position now, having produced excellent on and off-field results for the first time in the modern era, but those seven goals last night (not to mention the multitudes we shipped preseason) are a cautionary tale.  It’s also worth remembering that Rangers decline into liquidation was precipitated by Champions League elimination at the hands of Swedish opposition two years ago (“Larsson has scored”).  Wednesday presents a huge challenge.

As soon as I heard the stadium announcement on Tuesday I knew there was trouble in store from Uefa.  The second pyro punishment will lead to a heavier fine.  Celtic’s statement yesterday advised of matters of concern to Glasgow City Council Safety Advisory Group, who issue stadium safety licence, regarding a whole range of issues (overcrowding, lateral movement, moshing, body surfing).  What to say about 131 broken seats?  Ouch.

The club and Green Brigade (whose members occupy only a part of section 111) have met and we carry on as normal for now.  Question is, can either control everyone in the section?  I hope so but it’s a big ask. All it takes is one off-message person keen to ‘stick it to the man’, and there’s a long season ahead.  Place your bets, folks.

Our thoughts are with Paul Lennon and the Thai Tims after the news that one of the boys who sang on the Celtic videos died in a road accident while another is critically ill.

Only way to Police this is self Police. I have confidence we will do that.

There is actually a very high level of self policing goes on at grounds across the country and I have been impressed on a number of occassions when fans have put other fans right and effectively ensured they were ‘on message’. Notably at Pittodrie a few seasons ago when a Hearts player was getting some racial abuse. Surrounding fans rose as one and shouted the idiot down, before calling Stewards.

I’ve also expierenced it at Celtic Park when the ‘RA songbook came out – similar response.

My worst experience was at Ibrox, where I occassionally went with a Hun mate who has corporate seats. The full songbook was given an airing, some serious racial abuse dished out and as far as I could see the Stewards not only turned a blind ear/eye but were literally toe-tapping along with the singing.

I’m confident the Celtic fans will sort out our current problem.

I hope they do so in a way that doesn’t overly squash the enthusiasm of GB (if indeed it is a GB issue)…who IMO bring life to the stadium on match days.

  5. Talk of macjay’s post at 1.42 grabbed my attention, so I scrolled back and reprinted it. IMO a very silly post but hardly deserving of any major controversy.

    The fact.

The Celtic support are divided in their attitude to and opinion of the G.B.

    Well,of course.

That`s precisely what a political wedge is designed to do.

    That`s the function of entryism.

    First divide.Then…?

Nice banners are designed to hide the intention.

Then, before you know it,you have demonstrations in George Sq.

All going nicely according to plan for those who pull the levers behind the scenes.

    The goal?

    Power.

On the broken seats , that should be straightforward, if the season ticket holder for that seat has entered the stadium then he should be billed for the damage and their season ticket refunded and banned for life.

A touch draconian but I would suggest that the club need to nip this in the bud before we are over-run by muppets. It is clear to me where the authorities (Scottish) will want to take this and we are providing classic whataboutery fodder …….. so this behaviour needs to stop now.

  13. elbhoy,

After the games I’ve seen people use the seats for stepping across the rows to avoid the crowded stair to the exits, this could lead to damaging the seats, how would you feel if this happened to your seat and you got one of those sanctions you advocate ?

  14. Celtic_First on

Roy Greenslade calls Charlotte the Julian Assange of Scotland. This is brilliant, because it means a big increase in attention all round the world on the cheating that cheats have carried out in and around Scottish football.

Maybe we will get back the game we love and the shysters will turn their attention to something else.

Poor Jack Irvine. He just got caught up in the moment.

The revelations have been acutely embarrassing for Irvine, who declined to comment. But a former colleague told me he believes the emails need to be seen in the context of Rangers problems and the consequent frenetic atmosphere at the time.

I hope we have enough up front to see off Elsborg. I feel they will probably score so we need to (obviously) score more than them.

We should have had a new striker embedded by now and I hope this does not come back and haunt us. We probably will squeeze through.

I hope we give Amido a full game tomorrow – give the big man some match time and hopefully a confidence boosting goal against the Germans. The physical side could well be our best weapon against the Swedes.

PS: Some lads in section 111 need to grow up and seek attention by other means; often their actions are over illustrated for sure and distracting from an otherwise commendable section/spectacle. While their actions are pretty harmless anyone casting an eye at the recent charge (EUFA) sheet would think we had a violent element in our ranks which is clearly not the case.

No, he says others have referred to CF as the Julian Assange of Scotland, which is slightly different.

I can’t help thinking that Levenson is being used as an excuse here.

The emails are already in the public domain. It’s not like the MSM have obtained them themselves (as if).

    Dear all

Please try and understand that section 111, is not wholly Green Brigade.

There was a whole new load of young Celts arrived last season, taking up empty seats caused by banning orders, false arrests and harassment, most of the main GB can’t attend football matches due to the harassment, the younger lads have moved into this area and don’t have the same respect for CFC\ our property and good name. We need to reclaim 111 and stop the non ticket holders getting into the area, shame really that but it needs fixed.

If All GB Members or Supporters in their Section were like these two guys we would be in Good Hands..

Fast Forward the Thai Tims game..As a guy Who had a Accident that Changed his Life..Watching the GB ‘Passing the Section when Rangers Die’ (Croudsurfing) l knew this was Going to be Not good with the PLC..Croudsurfing in most Clubs here is Banned and that is on Flat floors..Croud surfing on Concrete steps at a 30 Degree Angle is………Do the Math..
