Sticking it to the man, cautionary Swedish tales

1347

Absolutely delighted for St Johnstone, who recorded one of the finest aggregate results by a Scottish club in European football in the last 30 years.  My brother was speaking to a Saints player this week, who told him the successful strategy and drive came from chairman, Steve Brown, a fact which Hibernian would do well to ponder today.

Malmo’s 0-7 victory at Easter Road yesterday was chastening ahead of our game against fellow Swedes, Elfsborg on Wednesday.  Celtic are in a remarkably strong position now, having produced excellent on and off-field results for the first time in the modern era, but those seven goals last night (not to mention the multitudes we shipped preseason) are a cautionary tale.  It’s also worth remembering that Rangers decline into liquidation was precipitated by Champions League elimination at the hands of Swedish opposition two years ago (“Larsson has scored”).  Wednesday presents a huge challenge.

As soon as I heard the stadium announcement on Tuesday I knew there was trouble in store from Uefa.  The second pyro punishment will lead to a heavier fine.  Celtic’s statement yesterday advised of matters of concern to Glasgow City Council Safety Advisory Group, who issue stadium safety licence, regarding a whole range of issues (overcrowding, lateral movement, moshing, body surfing).  What to say about 131 broken seats?  Ouch.

The club and Green Brigade (whose members occupy only a part of section 111) have met and we carry on as normal for now.  Question is, can either control everyone in the section?  I hope so but it’s a big ask. All it takes is one off-message person keen to ‘stick it to the man’, and there’s a long season ahead.  Place your bets, folks.

Our thoughts are with Paul Lennon and the Thai Tims after the news that one of the boys who sang on the Celtic videos died in a road accident while another is critically ill.

Canalar Nice patronizing post, says lots bout you. In fine with my education an understanding of ur post is fine afte re read. Excuse my ignorance an lack of education but u seemed to be criticising Celtic for apparent lack of contingency for replacing hooper yet only officially left in last hr an Lennon just said it was only in Germany that hooper told him he was leaving. What did i miss from ur post, feel free to have another go at me if it makes u feel a big man rather than answer civilly. Surely ur goin to at least give club few days to replace?

Could there be a case for limiting the number of posts each individual makes ?

The real thinkers & heavyweight posters rarely post more than 2 or 3 times in the course of a day.

    Normally even less.

That is probably because they only post when they have something to say that they deem to be worth the effort. They do not ever post just to see their names in print.

It is mostly those of us who very rarely have a constructive thought in our heads who feel the need to fill every idle moment with some kind of utterance, no matter how pointless it may be.

There appears to be a very clear connection between the number of our posts & the value of them.

The more posts, the less sense.

This offering only proves the point I am making.

BT,,,i was not having a go about old lizzie in the bar at sandyhills i am just long enough in the tooth to remember when they would not let any tims anywhere near the course,,,,its a fine course and i have played it several times in the last few years,,,but i know if they were still flush with money it would still be a masonic hole,,,,cheers

I remember when a teacher we had at St. Mungo’s, Mr. Innes, created a public stushie about Sandyhills not allowing Catholics. This would have been the early 60s I think. I can’t remember what the outcome was.

Well done for surviving the seemingly endless flack you’re getting on this behaviour issue. You deal with it with great equanimity. Why constructive criticism is seen as “doing the devil’s work” by some puzzles me.Such attitudes and behaviour will make it more difficult for Celtic to prosper.

  10. Scotland’s shame,

So you honestly believe the club did not know hooper wanted away before Germany ?

Do you think hooper strung them along all through the contract negotiations or do you think he might have told them he was determined to head south and would not be renewing ?

I believe the later and that is when the contingency should have been in place, now we are going into play CL offs without an leading front man.

If I remember correctly, your opening salvo my initial post was a ridiculous claim but when I answer in the same tone it me whose being unreasonable, away and bile yer heed, if you want to use derisive arguments then expect the same in return.

There’s no doubt that section 111 houses a broad spectrum of people but I don’t believe for a minute that the clever, creative and dedicated people responsible for the horsemen banner or the Barca display would wilfully damage seats or do anything else to harm the club for that matter.

Any section of the ground could if they wished get quite lively and break 100’s of seats ….

sections of the ground and the supporters in those sections bring themselves under the microscope by breaking their own seats, they are indeed drawing attention to themselves

you seem to have assumed that I am in favour of a 2 tier them and us system , whereas I am in favour of action to stop seats being broken by anyone who cares to break the seats.

Any suggestions on how this can be solved?

    Green Brigade’s Statement.

The Green Brigade find ourselves disappointed to hear that Celtic Football Club has deemed it necessary to release a statement which we feel unfairly demonizes our group as well as the Celtic supporters who sit in our section in 111. Following amicable discussions held behind closed doors it seems entirely counter-productive for such a statement to be released.

The group held discussions on Wednesday night with representatives of the club and outlined our position regarding the safety concerns that have been raised in Celtic’s statement. It was made clear that the Green Brigade were not responsible for any pyrotechnics which were used during the match against Cliftonville at Celtic Park and had no knowledge of any fan’s intention to use them. We accept that it took place in our section however and as a group we will strive to deal with the matter and have warned fans on our website against such behaviour in 111. We also demonstrated our willingness to work with the club regarding the mosh pits and crowd surfing which is concerning the safety team. It is however worth noting that the claim made regarding 131 broken seats is an exaggeration. Several of our members visited the empty section on Wednesday night following the meeting, and whilst it was evident that there was accidental damage, 131 broken seats appeared to be an embellishment. While this damage is regrettable it is totally accidental and simply a product of our sometimes boisterous style of support – intentional damage would not only be idiotic but it would not be tolerated.

A key safety concern mentioned was that of overcrowding. The group has worked with the club previously on this issue and urges those who do not have tickets for our section to stay away. We do our best to self-police the area in this regard however that has proven increasingly difficult, as Celtic this season had refused to allow us to control who has tickets for our block. If we do not know who has tickets for the area, and given that the stewards have proven their incompetence in this matter, it is extremely unfair to lay sole responsibility for this matter at the feet of the group. We have repeatedly requested that we have a regular stewarding team with whom we can build up a working relationship with in the hope that this will help with the issues raised.

Whilst the representatives of our group were willing to discuss the concerns that the club had, the club were extremely hesitant to discuss some of our concerns regarding the continual harassment of Celtic supporters. The Green Brigade have demonstrated a willingness to work with the club which is why we find it regrettable that the club have chosen to publicly castigate our section, and by doing so have invited the media to attack the Celtic support once more. At a time when Celtic supporters are being routinely harassed, intimidated and dragged through the courts we feel that this should hold greater priority than concerns over lateral movement.

It appears that Celtic Football Club are far more eager to publicly attack Celtic fans than they are to defend them.

  21. You are obviously in favour of a two tier system, you believe certain sections should be banned without recourse if the seats are broken, and that no one else in any other section would ever dream of damaging seats.

You also ignore the fact that there are many who enter section 111 without the correct ticket, who are more likely to cause the damage, as they are unlikely to suffer the consequences.

  23. I see those with short memories and fagile grasp of the realities that Celtic is operating within is asking.. “….Top striker for 3 years and we buy a project…?

Last I remembered Hopper was a project when we bought him.

    So was Wanyama.

Hands up those that said ….”Hooper Great”… when he first arrived?

The truth of the matter is that Celtic will and can only buy a project. If they were not a project they will not be comming to Celtic. No established striker who thinks he is worth his salt will come to Celtic so that they can play 6 Champion leaugue games…. if everything goes well with qualification, and then spend the rest of the year playing the Hibs and Inverness. No matter how big a club we think we are .. realy good striker or any footballer of anykind will always want to enhance and test their skills in a competitive environment. Scotland is not. The only good footballer that will stick with us .. will be a fan who happens to also be a footballer. In that case their emotions will overule common sense.

Others will come to Celtic as a project and if they get any good they will start thinking that they are too good for Celtic and agitate to go somewhere else … mostly the EPL.

The bottom line is that even if we offer Messie a zillion pounds a week.. he will not come ..at least not until he reaches retirement age and wants one last pay day.

Anothre thing that the would be great footbal managers in Celtic fan base who believes in splash the cash is that no one has considered the psychological impact of paying any player way over wht the rest is earning.

The dressing room harmony will be out of the window as other players will be looking to be payed on teh same par as the new guy.

A few players will down tools if you then tell them that they are not getting a pay rise to match the new guy.

PL and Lennon has not done a bad job so far , so I think we as supporters should just support and let them do the job they are being payed to do.

If I could do better I would probably not have a day job but be a footbal manager or CEO of whatever of a football club.

but if the stadium safety certificate is being compromised then they have to go…en masse if need be.

Certain elements within the GB overestimate their cultural and commercial value to the larger enterprise……who leads and who follows among them is neither here nor there…..ignorance is not an excuse.

Theres no negotiation with this……..they behave acceptably or they go.

    Just saying……

  27. Unbreakable seats good idea , they can be deployed selectively in the areas of greatest risk with a corresponding increase in the season ticket book process to cover the costs.
