Stiliyan, Henrik, Scott, Brendan, Stoichkov and Mendieta

456

I listened to Stiliyan Petrov talk calmly about cancer yesterday, as he sat with Liverpool’s James Milner ahead of your Foundation’s Match for Cancer next month.  Just a few decades ago, his recovery would be considered miraculous.

Cancer will affect one in every two of us.  That rate is higher than ever, as people live longer, but, what was a death sentence all too recently, is now treatable and often curable.

If you have been around CQN for long enough, you will know stories like Stiliyan’s are not always how things conclude.  We have lost too many of our number, and more of our loved ones, to this awful disease.

So the work goes on.  In memory of those we have lost, in appreciation of those who have come through successful treatment, and in that hope that our futures are increasingly spared.  Cancer success stories are one of the wonders of the modern world, and while millions suffer this illness, millions more contribute to the cause of treating and eradicating it.

The game itself will be a gathering of the Celtic clans, not just because of the way this disease has touched so many, but because Henrik will once more grace Celtic Park, as will Lubo, the brilliant Hristo Stoichkov, and the phenomenal Gaizka Mendieta.

Scott Brown will play too and Brendan is manager of Stiliyan’s team.  The great and the good are touched by this affliction, which is rapidly being controlled thanks to the efforts of millions.

The game takes place on Sunday 8 September (it’s an international break).  Tickets cost £14 or £6 concessions.  You can buy them here.

I Look forward to seeing you there.

Welcome to Celtic, Daniel Arzani.  The 19-year-old winger-come-central defender (lighten up, honestly!) arrives on a two year loan, having joined Manchester City a few days ago.

A word of caution – an away game in the League Cup is not the game I would choose to play tomorrow.  Get the job done professionally, Celtic.

    Neganon, cheers.

Agree with none of it, but that’s the beauty of time.

Good to get you on record (what was your prediction 5 years ago?)

    See you next year.

  5. The way it works as i understand it, is the Management team, including Brendan and Congerton, compile a list of preferred targets in order and pass these to Lawwell, forget the Board, they go to Lawwell direct and nobody else. Brendan has the final say on everyone on the list so it’s all very well blaming Congerton but he is essentially chief scout and nothing more. We do not know which of recommendations are being followed through or not.

Mark Lawwell works for Manchester City as a scout i believe, probably the best run football Club from top to bottom, on the planet. It is not an arrangement to be sniffed at. I assume and hope that Mark Lawwell is able to indicate to his father which players might be available and these are passed to Brendan for approval or not. I firmly believe Brendan has the final say on this.

It is preferable to have as many strings to your bow as is possible. The Man City link has served us very well and will continue to do so over the coming years. IMO it would be foolish to dismiss such a partnership, As long as Brendan is able to veto any options from Man City, i don’t see an issue.

  6. The stage is set for the NFL.

I hope he says no. I don’t know Neil. I know he is headstrong.

    Gambling.

The lack of Respect from the Leader p!ssed me off so much.

I’d advise Neil to go to the Continent and Become the Genius Coach that he is, then come BACH..

Maybe the Director of Everything will have left the Building by then.

  7. GUTENBERG @ 11:11 PM,

    Many thanks for clarifying…

This recruitment thing is becoming quite a mess.

Now as Man City and ourselves fish in different waters then we are not looking at procuring the same players, certainly not first team not even squad members…

That said to be running an in-house recruitment procedure and running and informal process in parallel seems go be madness…

I see that getting a “heads up” on a player has got to be a good thing. Scouts need all the “intelligence” they can get.

Yet there seems to be a process of recruitment/hawking of players that is outwith the knowledge, let alone control, of our Head of Football operations…

    Very, very strange…

When you hear reports that our (football) Management Team aren’t trusted on recruitment, while the Manager suggests his requests to strengthen the team/squad are all but ignored…

    Very, Very, very strange…

    Hail Hail

  8. Our failure to progress to the CL group stages is a major disappointment none of us can hide from. Responsibility for success and failure on the park rests with our manager. Our preparation and planning for this crucial part of our season imo was poor and bordering on complacent. If our CEO got in the way of the managers plans he has to now do the decent thing and step aside. Celtic is bigger than PL. We are far bigger than PL and DD combined. We will still be here long after they have gone. Hh

  9. Gordon64,

Dude – DD is currently a lot bigger than Celtic.

    The rank and file Celtic.

    He is CELTIC

Now about the pictures of the Jetskis with Masonic emblems on them @ Sandy Lane courtesy of the Nasty Sun photographs of the LOOSE LIPS ……. Simon Cowell. Way back in the day…..

    That said it all.

  10. So two league games into the season and people on here talking about not winning the league ffs!!! For the record we got beat by hearts by the odd goal when we left 5 players out and we got beat by the champion of greece in aek who are no mugs.

I would give it a couple of months before getting worked up. If we are struggling in january then fair enough.

We have best players in the league and I cant think of one players I would pick in scotland over our own. That does not meam we should not strive for better ;-)

i would love to see us purchase a better rightback and centreback, but dont buy into the we are weaker argument given that the players who have left thusfar contributed jack last season, fact!!!

    HH

  11. Petec Disagree amigo. Celtic will survive and thrive if Mr Desmond walks away. Likewise with Peter Lawwell who has served the club well but has now become an obstacle to progress. The one great constant has been our support through good times and bad . Hh

  12. GORDON64 @ 11:37 PM,

“Our preparation and planning for this crucial part of our season imo was poor and bordering on complacent.”

    My feelings are the opposite…

When we travelled to the far reaches of Europe to start our UCL qualifying campaign our preparation and planning was nothing short of excellent.

The team fitness, conditioning and attitude, our pre-season training regime and match schedules could not have went better.

We started the campaign with a tour-de-force.

This was despite a very short break, injuries to key personnel and the World Cup in progress.

If we believe our Manager, and why wouldn’t we, he had identified certain positions that needed strengthening and a player who he wanted the Club to buy.

He wanted these players in as early in the campaign as possible so he could integrate them into the team and use them in the qualifying campaign.

That didn’t happen, it was outside his control.

Suspensions and injuries took their toll sufficiently to make the difference between success and failure.

If our Manager had been supported in his preparation plans we may well have had the players to mitigate for those unavailable, we may well still have a chance of qualifying for the UCL.

I can find no fault with the football departments preparations.

    Hail Hail

  13. Chairbhoy

I suspect that Man City will come across really good players that won’t fit their CL winners criteria and that’s they, through their Celtic minded scout, might find their way to the Celtic recruitment team.

Perfectly understandable but as you said it makes it a bit messy and kinda complicates things but in an ideal situation it’d be like having the best of both worlds.

  14. If someone thinks that CQN is dead then the only logical reason for them being here is to troll. Or maybe I’ve got it all wrong and they are on an evangelical mission to show the remainder on here the error of our ways.

Or there again maybe thats all sychophantic shite mo chairde.

  15. Chair Brendan knew Dedryck and Mickel would be at the world cup. (He obviously forgot about Gamboa). In central defence that left 2 youngsters Ajer and Hendry and mr unreliable Jozo. Comper is nowhere to be seen leaving the best defender on the planet KT to martial the defence. Hh

  16. See all the Johhnycomelatelyseasonticketholders instead of the expected precession to 10 in a row you might need to actually turn up to every game at CP and support the team. Hh

  17. G64- correctafknmundo – Jozo is a sicknote, Livvy another plastic pitch, Boyata blanking contract talks last season.Major priority in January and start of this window for me,2 centre backs , instead we are scrathing about with young guys, amateur forward planning, WHEN THERE IS NO EXCUSE.HH

  18. GUTENBERG @ 12:04 AM,

Well Yes, it’s always difficult knowing where the lines are in a “you scratch my back I’ll scratch yours” relationship.

So this situation has to handled very carefully, be as transparent as possible and communicated well through those involved.

It seems that didn’t happen, almost wilfully.

    GORDON64 @ 12:16 AM,

Yes, that’s very true. Although he didn’t go public until the eve of our third qualifying round, BR stated he’d asked for players and asked to get them in early in the window.

Now some have said hard luck BR, you didn’t get the January window right that’s your look out – deal with it.

To me very harsh… what of the Compper situation?

Look at Hearts, they are now looking for a CH, why? Because Chrisophe Berra got injured, he’s out long term.

Hearts Board aren’t saying you should have covered that in January, they’ve been pragmatic, they’ve said these things happen, we need another Centre Half.

    That’s football…

BR was incensed by the lack of commitment in securing John McGinn, ok, there seems to be factors involved in this but why was our Manager so peeved?

Then we have Danny Arzani, the process of securing his services was far more professional and smooth however our Head of Football operations knew little or nothing about this… in fact the best you could say was he’s ambivalent.

The most bizarre though is the Boyata situation, we were in the midst of negotiating his departure, in fact a transfer was imminent and all over the press and our Manager had to make a public declaration to stop it in it’s tracks.

The way I see it our recruitment is a total shambles and I for one can’t lay it at the door of our Head of Football.

    Hail Hail

  19. GORDON64 @ 1:01 AM,

    Very true…

Although it’s way past my bedtime…

Goodnight all – thanks for the blather…

    Hail Hail

  20. Reading back for the last couple of hours there , some interesting views .

    I’ve always said , i dont care or worry about 10 n a row , or trebles .

Trying to win the league with our best 11 plus subs is my aim first and foremost .

Placing trebles and 10 in a row as priorities are the reason ( in my eyes ) why our kids are not developing as they might / should . I would love Celtic to play (start) at least 2 youths / development squad in our cup games and more game time through the season . I know i’m on my own in this way of thinking , just how i see it .
