Stjarnan have form in Scotland and Poland

661

Celtic face Icelandic champions Stjarnan in their opening Champions League qualifier, with the first leg just three weeks away.  Stjarnan knocked Motherwell out of the Europa League last season, by all accounts the Scottish club should have given a much better account of themselves.

It will be vastly more concerning to Ronny Deila that they went on to eliminate Lech Poznan in the next round.  Lech finished second in Poland, just two points behind our old pals Legia Warsaw, and the Polish season starts two weeks before Scotland’s, so there is nothing to be complacent about.

A three goal home defeat at the hands of Inter Milan ended Stjarnan’s European adventure, but by that stage the Icelandic fans must had expired their European budget for the season, the trip to the San Siro would have been a suitable place to bow out.

The other consequential information when we draw teams from near the Arctic Circle is that they are midseason and (from what I can make out) play on an artificial surface.

I’ve no idea what happened to Motherwell and Lech Poznan but there are no excuses for either team and there will be none for Celtic.  Let’s get the job done.

While I agree we could have upped our bottom line on new acquisition values, I’d say we got very very lucky with the players we sold and it would be near impossible to repeat that luck season upon season.

However I do think that small increase would have reduced the number of duds we carry.

  3. Of all the regrets I have over Celtic players, the biggest I have is that Paddy McCourt was never given a run as the playmaker for the team. He had all the attributes. You don’t need searing pace, as Pirlo shows–as indeed Lubo showed. As Mo’N showed with Lubo, he didn’t know what to do at first. Track back with all that talent and football brain? He finally left him alone. Ach Paddy, if only—

  4. And if we sign another proven injury prone player I’m gonna shit my brains out.

I agree, we need more revenue, greatly more. If we doubled income from domestic football we’d still be smaller than Leicester City.

Champions League lets us hang onto their coattails.

Until we radically change our domestic environment, the club will continue to diminish year on year relative to clubs in the big leagues in Europe.

No amount of innovation will deliver meaningful change unless it involves a change of environment.

I think we’re all in agreement that the only priority objective for Celtic is to get the heck out of dodge. Everything else is just housekeeping in the interim.

The question follows: So what the hell are we doing about it?

Bob Paisley’s achievements speak for themselves, but he had a Club, Coaching set-up and players cast by Bill Shankly, Brian Clough on the other hand was about achieving with unfashionable Club’s with unspectacular players, mind you, you then have the Peter Taylor factor. But Great Managers both, who would choose?

Well I’ve got to agree, even though it’s early days, it looks like RD is getting more support from PL. Don’t know why, maybe because Neil was a rookie Manager or maybe his idea(l)s weren’t in sync but it’s so often about personalities.

I’d like to see this Coaching team stay together for sometime, I believe they can deliver.

    Good morning all!

I have absolutely no doubts, after losing out on the treble last season, that we will sign an expensive and world-class striker who is proven at the very top level…

… I mean how else could we hope to win the treble when Warburtons Buns are obviously favourites to win the scottish cup after swooping on and then jetting in all these top players?

I hear their scouting network are also keeping a close eye on Usain Bolt after being impressed by him in his TV advert. Also, Moshni has been lined up for a sensational return to ‘where he belongs’. He said, “Of course, it will be an honour to play for the best club in the world again. Obviously, I have been banned for quite a few games, but I read in the papers how brilliant Danny Wilson is and he’ll no doubt keep the defence solid until I’m back on the beautiful grass of Ibrox. Actually, I don’t think Mr McCoist gets enough credit for the work he does out there. The pitch condition allows us to play the classy, silky football we do so he certainly earns his wage.”
