Stjarnan have form in Scotland and Poland

661

Celtic face Icelandic champions Stjarnan in their opening Champions League qualifier, with the first leg just three weeks away.  Stjarnan knocked Motherwell out of the Europa League last season, by all accounts the Scottish club should have given a much better account of themselves.

It will be vastly more concerning to Ronny Deila that they went on to eliminate Lech Poznan in the next round.  Lech finished second in Poland, just two points behind our old pals Legia Warsaw, and the Polish season starts two weeks before Scotland’s, so there is nothing to be complacent about.

A three goal home defeat at the hands of Inter Milan ended Stjarnan’s European adventure, but by that stage the Icelandic fans must had expired their European budget for the season, the trip to the San Siro would have been a suitable place to bow out.

The other consequential information when we draw teams from near the Arctic Circle is that they are midseason and (from what I can make out) play on an artificial surface.

I’ve no idea what happened to Motherwell and Lech Poznan but there are no excuses for either team and there will be none for Celtic.  Let’s get the job done.

It looks as if Parma – if it can be resurrected(!) – will have to ‘return(?) to several tiers lower than the fourth.

A lawyer married a woman who had previously divorced 10 husbands. On their wedding night, she told her new husband, “Please be gentle, I’m still a virgin.” “What?” said the puzzled groom. “How can that be if you’ve been married 10 times?” “Well, Husband #1 was a sales representative. He kept telling me how great it was going to be. Husband #2 was in software services. He was never really sure how it was supposed to function, but he said he’d look into it and get back to me. Husband #3 was from field services. He said everything checked out diagnostically, but he just couldn’t get the system up. Husband #4 was in telemarketing. Even though he knew he had the order, he didn’t know when he would be able to deliver. Husband #5 was an engineer. He understood the basic process, but wanted three years to research, implement, and design a new state-of-the-art method. Husband #6 was from finance and administration. He thought he knew how, but he wasn’t sure whether it was his job or not. Husband #7 was in marketing. Although he had a nice product, he was never sure how to position it. Husband #8 was a psychologist. All he ever did was talk about it. Husband #9 was a gynecologist. All he did was look at it. Husband #10 was a stamp collector. All he ever did was… God! I miss him! But now that I’ve married you, I’m really excited!” “Good,” said the new husband, “but, why?” “You’re a lawyer. This time I know I’m going to get screwed!”

  16. the glorious balance sheet on

These European qualifying round ties are a joke. Sending st Johnstone to Armenia at this stage of the competition is laughable but i don’t think either st Johnstone or the Armenian side will be laughing. Whatever of those 2 sides gets eliminated will end up making a big financial loss from their “European adventure” given the travel costs involved in traipsing from one edge of the continent to another to off the beaten track locations.

The draws should be regionalised at these early pre qualifying stages. it’s folly to send a team from the western edge of Europe to play a no-mark game 500 miles from Baghdad and vice versa.

To think that both those teams slogged their guts out over the course of a season to earn the right to play European football and for one of them it will only be a costly exercise that is over and done with before the 2nd last week in July is done.

I honestly think that the clubs from the smaller nations are being put in a situation where they are losing money from playing 1 or 2 European ties per season in the back of beyond. We are getting to the stage where the Europa league positions in the SPFL are a poisoned chalice.

As for our draw, it should be comfortable if KR Rejkavik last season were a reliable indicator of the quality of the Icelandic league.

  17. 3 weeks until we Kick off the CL qualifiers? Are the Bhoys back in training? Some of them have just finished international duty n’est pas?
