Stokes, Griffiths, desolation and competition

1003

Anthony Stokes started the season with a flurry, scoring four goals in the first three league games of the season, but he managed just another three goals before the arrival of Leigh Griffiths two weeks ago.  He has since scored against Aberdeen in the Cup as well as Sunday’s hat-trick against St Johnstone.

Three goals in 28 appearances is a desolate return for a Celtic striker, especially during a season where the team have been so dominant, and would have contributed to Neil Lennon insisting a striker, capable of scoring regularly in the league, was recruited in January.  Managers often talk about needing competition for places, so it’s natural that we should extrapolate from the arrival of Griffiths.  While we may see both strikers play together between now and the end of the season I’m not convinced the manager will have this pairing in his mind for next season.

A generous CQN’er, who would like to remain below radar, has offered £1000 sponsorship of the CQteN Dream Team, if 125 people submit a team.  The Dream Team is your chance to select your team from those who have played 10 or more games during the CQN decade.

Select 11 players in either a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 formation; you’ll need a goalkeeper, two full backs, two central defenders, 3 or 4 midfielders and 2 or 3 forwards.  You also need to select a manager from the decade.

The team judged as the strongest will be announced at the CQteN St Patrick’s Dinner on 14 March.  The event is open to bloggers and lurkers but you can only enter ONCE.  Closing date is 3pm, Sunday 9 March.  There will be prizes!!

So far around 60 people have entered teams so we have lots to do to hit the £1000 target.  For a comprehensive list of players who are eligible for selection, see CRC’s comment here.  Email your entry to Doc here, and remember to include a manager: doccqten@gmail.com

I recognise that Leigh Griffiths, Anto Stokes and Tony Watt may well have had behaviour issues in the past, but it looks like they have settled down a wee bit.

If the manager can get those three to focus entirely on their football, then the club has an absolutely lethal strikeforce at it’s disposal.

Also there has been a lot of old tripe been directed at Leigh just because he has so many different children to so many different woman.

That’s nobody else’s business but his own.

Just so long as he is looking after them, and paying his way, which he is… Then it’s not a problem.

The three amigos are growing up and acting a lot more mature these days.

They are a force to be reckoned with.

PSG winning their game at a canter.

It would be foolish to bet against them, I think.

  5. O’Higgins play a controversial 4-2-1-3 system, which will make this an interesting fixture.

I offered 2 tickets for a Celtic Home game as a prize in a local Charity Raffle. The winner has opted to go to the Calley game on March 1st. My question is how far ahead of match will Ticket Office post out a Ticket. I need to have them in my hands here in Clonmel a few days before the game.

Cant work out German football. Two teams in CL final last year but this season’s second placed Bayer Leverkusen getting another horsing at home. Btw hunburg in serious relegation danger for the first time in their history.

I reckon the whole fenian army are behind Leigh, now that he has signed.

I can’t quite see all 3 playing in a Champions League game, in Scotland it will be carnage goalswise, whoever gets the nod.

I reckon Leigh will make a CL starting slot next season, if he settles down after all the nerves of joining the best Club in the World. Tony definitely has it in his locker if he comes back a lot stronger mentally. Stokesie has it all to do now, he can get a hat trick every week if he has the mentality right.

Intriguing games so far. Barca need to get their full-backs forward more. Crosses would be pointless against the City defenders. Might need to try cut-backs or nifty one-twos.

  15. Jon O’Neill etc,

The Soviet army did indeed play a major part in defeating the Nazis – not that we’re likely to forget it as we’re constantly reminded!

What many do forget is that the USSR was the No2 contributor to the outbreak of WWII: without his Pact with Stalin, Hitler might not have dared launch his attack on Poland. He had fought in WWI & had memories of losing the war on 2 fronts. BTW the Red Army’s (as it then was) first contributon in WWII was to stab the Poles in the back.

    Owen,

Poland defeated the main Red Army at Warsaw in 1920 & Stalin was the political commisar for the defeated force – but he might have hated the Poles in any case.

Petec – The future’s bright comrade.

The only thing I worry about is that other clubs keep trying to buy our best footballers, it’s frustrating for the manager because he is trying to build.

Football is like that these days though, we do the same to less wealthy clubs.

Seems to be fiarly level below Bayern. Dortmund’s lack of squad depth has hit them hard this season, but will probably finish second again. Hamburg and Stuttgart struggling badly.

Nobody seems to be saying Bayern are missing “Rangers” though :-)

    !!Bada Bing!! 20:41

You clearly didn’t read Paul’s article about competition for places. He’ll have to start on the bench and see if he can work his way into the team :-)

  20. Poor spectacle so far as both teams seem reluctant to commit players to run behind defensive lines. Can see the game stretching in last 20 minutes.

One good thing about watching the CL is that most of the Italian teams get knocked out early these days.

The Priest coughs a few times to get his attention but the drunk

Finally, the Priest pounds three times on the wall.

The drunk mumbles, “ain’t no use knockin, there’s no paper on this

  22. Zbyszek

I didn’t think that Stalin ever played an active combatant part in any war. The allies sold the Poles down the river at Yalta – and Poland was the reason Britain went to war. Mind you, Churchill was a busted flush by that time. It was the US and Russia who won the war. Britain played an honourable but far less significant role.

  23. Hopefully a better second half.

I don,t think we are out our depth in this company.

Never mind all this Soviet stuff back to the real world!

Empire biscuits were originally called Bismarck biscuits after Otto – they then were called German biscuits until the start of the Great War when they became the more patriotic Empire biscuits. A bit like the Saxe-Coburg-Gothas suddenly becoming the good old Windsors!
