Strachan comments should inform latest reconstruction talks

121

Having failed to convince Premiership clubs of the need for league reconstruction to save Hearts from relegation earlier this month, Ann Budge’s latest plan will be discussed by the SPFL’s board today.  While Premiership football is expected to get underway behind closed doors in August, it is increasingly likely that the lower leagues will not start until it is possible for fans to attend, which will not be before January.

From what I hear, this plan, like the last, takes a holistic view of the game, spreading resources throughout the 42 clubs.  Minds in the Premiership, though, may be more attuned to recent comments from Gordon Strachan, who continued a lifetime habit of stating the bleeding obvious by saying most of Scotland’s senior clubs are not professional in the modern sense.  Sure, they pay wages, but they have few professional trappings and have an appalling record of player development in recent decades.

Budge would be better off with a plan to accommodate the few other lower league clubs who would prefer to start playing behind closed doors.  We could end up with around 16 senior clubs – a bit short for two divisions but these are unusual times.  Have a Community League, have promotion and relegation to/from the Professional League, but let’s not pretend clubs taking £100k are essentially the same as those who make our game commercially viable.

All profits from the beer will be directed towards funding free hand sanitiser for the NHS and healthcare charities.

  2. I’m ambivalent about the proposed reconstruction. 14-14-14 will rule out any repeat of what we seen last season with us playing away to the top 6 more than Sevco. And still they finished 13 behind us.

A 14 team set up should see equal games home and away among the top 6.

But on the other hand, I’d love to see Hearts go down.

    I don’t think it’ll pass.

  3. No one, not even the most desperate of Sevco fans will be talking about an asterisk next to 9 once we move past The Ten.

“Paddy is as gifted a footballer as I have ever seen,” said Gordon Strachan, the man who took McCourt to Scotland, in 2015. “Some players can see a pass, but not dribble. Others can dribble, but not see a pass. Paddy can do both. And, I have got to say, watching Paddy is one of the best things in football.”

I see some more EPL players tested positive for covid19

I cannot see clubs in Scotland being able to afford all of this testing and self isolating before games thingy.

Also how long before Sevco complain if 1 of their players test positive and they have to play without him, they will complain that he was their key man and they were disadvantaged.

They won’t….they’ll claim it stopped at 8, just as they were about to mount a run of form the seize the prize from our hands. And that the world restarted after Covid. So in ‘hun years’ next year would give us a mere 1IAR

  15. Lorenzo Amaruso ” GREETIN” in the Daily Ranger that other teams were trying to beat his mob MORE than when they played against Celtic.

He is more or less accusing other Teams of “Lying Down” to Celtic when we stopped the illegal 10 in season 1997/1998….this is the same mob who wanted Chris Sutton ” hung drawn and quartered” for his comments against Dunfermline in 2003 ?

” In the words of the late great Terry Thomas…….”What an absolute shower” !

Do these so called newspapers actually pay Chumps like Amaruso to re write history, as both Celtic and the Huns lost 6 league games that season, and Celtic won ONE Game more…hence why we won the League.

    Hun Chumps !

Re Amoruso, he is probably using the stats that they dropped more points vs the rest while having a better head to head vs us.

My view would be that the league is about points, not the teams you beat. They had no consistency that season vs mid table teams and let us off the hook(we were a pretty new team that year). They blew it, pure and simple.

I always had the impression in the 90s that they kept just a bit ahead of us in squad depth and quality to ensure the league. As such, they missed out on a lot of winnable trebles and were Lilian Gish in Europe

In contrast , I think we have put ourselves way ahead currently. In the Scottish league, a few million spend will get you challenging for top spot but ultimately you fall a few points short if you do not have the dominant squad and financing.

The Huns attitude lost them the 10, I honestly don’t see that in our squad. We had a great first half of the season and so did they. Our squad and the correct mentality burned them off after Christmas.

Sorry for long post, was up for a 7.30 Teams call which went well so am wide awake and happy!

  17. From the excerpt I read big Lorenzo Baileys was talking about this season and not season 97-98. A league is a marathon not a sprint and if you drop points against other teams that is due to inconsistency of performance, like dropping points right, left and centre at the turn of the year.

To use the favoured horse racing analogy you might be neck and neck until the final furlong but if the eventual winner puts on the burners and wins by several lengths that is due to the quality of the winner not because of the other horses in the race.

  18. Pleased to report that MACJAY is fine, just taking a break from CQN.

    ……..

Sorry mate, but the “interview” that I read this morning from Amaruso was about THEMS NOT getting to 10 in a row in season 1997/1998.

I havent read the entire “interview” so its possible he is also talking about this season also, but he was “greetin” about how other teams didnt try as much against Celtic back then.

    Stay safe.

  22. Former Rangers skipper Lorenzo Amoruso has warned Celtic every team in Scotland will try to stop them bagging Ten in a Row.

Amoruso was part of the Ibrox side’s failed quest to secure a Scottish record 10th successive top-flight crown in his debut season in Glasgow after signing for Walter Smith in 1997. The Italian quickly became convinced that the entire top flight was conspiring to stop Smith’s team in its tracks.

And now he expects history to be repeated when Neil Lennon’s side get back down to business after being awarded with title No.9 during the
coronavirus lockdown.

POG….This is part of the Amaruso “interview” Today….

In an exclusive Record Sport interview Amoruso said: “It was my first season in Glasgow and one of the first things I realised was how badly every other team wanted to beat us. It seemed very obvious to me they tried harder against Rangers than any other team.

“Everyone wants to beat the big guys and Rangers are always the big guys. But that particular season I felt everyone was trying even harder than normal.

  23. I can only imagine that ‘big Lorenzo’ has upset the staunchists of FF by recognising the obvious 10 IAR next season…..

    Just like Scottish football eh?

Why on earth do we feel the need to split the league near the seasons end, why (don’t mention money!!)

It’s a nonsense and not in the least fair, so what’s new? Each team should play each other the same number of times per season.

On top of that, all SPL clubs must play on grass, If they do not, then they face relegation, simple. Again it is not fair, it is bound to help those clubs playing on astroturf every week , bound to.

    But what do I know.
