Strachan lessons as Milan looms

1655

Neil Lennon will begin to get his players back at Lennoxtown tomorrow after, what for most of the first team, has been a two week international break.  For many of the established players, he’ll be hoping for a clean bill of health, but with trips to Tynecastle and Milan ahead, the manager will be keen to spend time with Teemu Pukki.

Teemu played 92 minutes for Finland in Tbilisi last night so will get little time on the training fields before Celtic’s next two games.  Tynecastle itself may provide the most effective training opportunity ahead of Wednesday’s game at the San Siro.

Delighted for Gordon Strachan, who has already caused an unlikely upturn in Scotland’s fortunes.  He is a better coach and tactician than he ever got credit for.  His Key Performance Indicators (winning leagues, knock out stages of the Champions League) were achieved in spades, but there was a soft underbelly which always seemed to undermine progress.  Curiously, his Celtic team went 15 months without keeping a clean sheet away from home in all competitions, despite winning the league in both seasons this run spanned.

The one game during this period of note was the 1-0 defeat to Milan in the Champions League knock out stage; the only game Celtic completed 90 minutes without conceding.  If Neil Lennon can replicate this achievement he stands an excellent chance of a second successive memorable Champions League campaign.

0 – 0 in Milan after 90 minutes? I’ll take that right now thanks

    Will probably go to 96 mins if it’s still 0-0 :}

Was at that game myself. They were winning 1-0, they got a penalty, don`t know if it was Kai Johanson or Penman who took it. I recall it hit the bar and the penalty taker headed the rebound it but it didn`t count. We went straight up the park and scored, then added 2 more before time up. Was my favourite game v them until 21/05/79, which was my favourite game until 27th of August 2000

I think we may have missed Bobo during those fifteen months

Didn’t Mark Brown play in goal that day? Maybe we missed him too :-)

I have been hugely sceptical about the decision to pay Moyoukolo a considerable wage ,given his track record of continual serious injury.

I am hoping that he is on a pay as you play deal.

We didn’t break the bank to keep Rogic because of his injury record .

We were right to part with him.

    He is injured again.

Moyoukolo’s injuries were even more serious than Rogic’s.

It was therefore very surprising to me that we signed him.

As I say , hopefully he is on a pay as you play deal, and there wasn’t any signing on fee.

He has however taken up a CL squad place.

I have stated before that Derk is a big concern for me , due to his injury record.

He cost millions on salary and transfer fee.

Derk is an unnecessary gamble for me.

Time will tell if it pays off.

I oft wondered what Strachans Celtic would have achieved in that season Milan beat us in extra time if we had a Henrik in the side?

Funnily enough I often wondered what we might have achieved if Henrik’s team had had Boruc! :-)

I know we shouldn’t dwell on ‘what ifs’ but we do.

I have thought about yer two suggested ‘what ifs’ on many occasions. But the one I think about most is (and slightly more likely) is, what if Broto wasn’t cup tied?

I thought he was a decent enough player for us.

  15. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan supports Oscar Knox, MacKenzie Furniss and anyone else who fights Neuroblastoma on

I think we are capable of a draw in Milan to gain a point.

I also think we are capable of drawing with Milan at Celtic park to gain a point.

I think we are capable of a draw in Amsterdam to gain a point.

I think we are well capable of beating Ajax at Celtic park to gain three points.

Those games would leave us with six points.

I think Milan and Ajax can take a point off one another.

If so, then leaving Barcelona out of the equation, then after six games the tables would stand as follows.

    Celtic 6 points

    Milan 4 points

    Ajax 3 points.

All with Barcelona to come– and us to play Barca last.

    Is that unreasonable?

Lets say I am wrong in my assumption re Milan v Ajax.

If either one beats the other at home and draws away it still only puts them on 6 points — the same as us in my scenario.

Could we secure a win against Milan at Celtic park?

Are we capable of more than a draw in Amsterdam?

Can we take any points from Barca?

This group is far from impossible for us.

    THE LONG WAIT IS OVER

    Appalling,certainly.

    Surprising? Not really,IMO.

First thing Thatcher did was ramp up Police and Army pay.

Followed by quid pro quo all round.

Help us out here,we won’t ask questions how you do it.

Then, typically, telling lies while in a position of authority became endemic.

Cover-ups became the norm as there was no oversight.

I doubt it started with Thatcher, but it sure accelerated. It ended with the sleaze of the Major years.

Except it didn’t. Think expenses, weapons of mass destruction, the famous bigoted woman.

Power without oversight means never having to say you’re sorry.

Has it not been said derk has played over 30games past couple of seasons ? I think he will be a player for us. What concerns be is where does sammy go. As shakhtar showed (again) hes not a striker.

Anyway has lustig come back from swedish games injuryed or he be ok ? Big player for us.
