Strachan lessons as Milan looms

1655

Neil Lennon will begin to get his players back at Lennoxtown tomorrow after, what for most of the first team, has been a two week international break.  For many of the established players, he’ll be hoping for a clean bill of health, but with trips to Tynecastle and Milan ahead, the manager will be keen to spend time with Teemu Pukki.

Teemu played 92 minutes for Finland in Tbilisi last night so will get little time on the training fields before Celtic’s next two games.  Tynecastle itself may provide the most effective training opportunity ahead of Wednesday’s game at the San Siro.

Delighted for Gordon Strachan, who has already caused an unlikely upturn in Scotland’s fortunes.  He is a better coach and tactician than he ever got credit for.  His Key Performance Indicators (winning leagues, knock out stages of the Champions League) were achieved in spades, but there was a soft underbelly which always seemed to undermine progress.  Curiously, his Celtic team went 15 months without keeping a clean sheet away from home in all competitions, despite winning the league in both seasons this run spanned.

The one game during this period of note was the 1-0 defeat to Milan in the Champions League knock out stage; the only game Celtic completed 90 minutes without conceding.  If Neil Lennon can replicate this achievement he stands an excellent chance of a second successive memorable Champions League campaign.

  1. Reminds me of a First Division club…

Standard Liege will need to make at least a

Champions League place this season if they

are to avoid fears of bankruptcy, according to

the president of its fan-clubs association.

Louis Smal, who heads Famille des Rouches –

the umbrella group overseeing Standard’s fan

clubs – has for long been protesting against

supposed plans to resell the club.

Standard fans have not been huge supporters

of club owner Roland Duchatelet, whose tenure

has seen a marked rise in expenses and

    losses.

However, the 10-time Belgian league winners

are on a 12-match winning streak – at both

home and in Europe – since the start of the the season.

However, Smal has warned of a storm to come

unless they get back to the league-winning

    ways they enjoyed until 2008/09.

“If we do not qualify for the Champions

League, the club will be on the verge of

bankruptcy”, he told Sudinfo . “This is my fear.

“Although Duchatelet is the boss, I do not

share his politics. Where Anderlecht have

reduced their payroll by 30%, that of Standard

    has exploded.

“This was even after Duchatelet had said on

21st May that it should decrease.

“[Former Standard player Axel] Witsel used to

earn €650,000 per year. Today, six or seven

players are on €1.2m per year, while the

operating loss at June 30, was about €10m.

“With such treatment, no one will buy the

club. This club cannot become like Beerschot

[who went bankrupt earlier this year].”

Standard could only finish fourth last season

and had to enter Europe via the Europa

    League’s second qualifying round.

If you are from Lennoxtoun maybe you will know Campsie Joe from Twitter — he stays in Milton of Campsie and his old man used to be the jannie at St Peter’s in Partick and then at Our Lady of the Assumption in Ruchill?

I have no doubt that there were politics involved in the decision not to play him more than he did, however, I’m not privy to exactly what was going on within the corridors of power at Parkhead.

Yep the holding hands thing was something more akin to a red ash pitch in north Glasgow than the San Siro but it was a tactic that was used by other, probably better, teams than us at the time.

I’m not, and never have been, convinced with this arument that Balde was better than we had at the time. McCmanus was an excellent near post defender but he lacked pace, strength and was frequently outjumped by slighter, smaller forwards.

Balde’s greatest attribute was his pace, he was able to counter the age old tactic of getting the defenders to turn because quite simply he was often able to turn and still catch up with an attacking player.

For me though he made far too many mistakes and I was more than happy that WGS kept him for occasional outings like Tannadice on Boxing Day in ’07.

    Horses for courses mate.

    —-

The BBC does retain, sometimes reluctantly, a respect that would cause convulsions even amongst some of the abusers if it disappeared as institution. Despite the infighting at the highest level that resembles a Mexican cockfight; despite the flaws which have exposed lack of due diligence over Saville, in the coming months the BBC will have to hold its nerve and supply a life-support system to their political frontmen that looked sadly lacking with someone who merely passed a few words about Rangers.

So there you are. That’s my view and I’m sticking to it. The BBC should have spurned the Rangers apology and said something of the same of their correspondent as a litmus test for the fun and games about to start over where a cross will be placed on a ballot.

Archie Macpherson is a broadcaster who worked for the BBC for more than 20 years.

  8. Paul 67, fellow CQN’ers et al,

Read your article with total agreement. I too am delighted for Gordon Strachan. Much seems to have been achieved in a very short period and the slide to international obscurity seems to have been halted and maybe, just maybe even reversed. He is without doubt a better coach and tactician than he ever gets credit for.

Three successive league titles and I do not believe that it was only his fault we failed to get a fourth. However to some, WGS was never going to receive unequivocal backing ( For a variety of reasons ). Some of us remember saying watch what you wish for. Tony Mowbray Nice Guy, but top Manager ??

Ref the Jim Spence situation : As most will know I am a great advocate of free speech, within acceptable parameters . A while ago I promised myself that I would concentrate on Celtic matters and ignore the dead club, however what is happening cannot go without comment. For 400 deluded persons to complain about the truth is almost perverse.

Surely for sanity’s sake we can meet and surpass that. I would urge all to complain to the BBC about distortion of the truth. As for an apology: your having a laugh.

We must contradict the people that believe if you shout and repeat the myth often enough, i.e., that the club did not die it was the holding company then history will be re-written and it will become acceptable and the norm. Absolute claptrap and they know it. They hypocritically urge free speech when it suits and demonise anyone who disagrees.

I welcome the renewed debate and controversy. Let us hope the BBC and NUJ do likewise.

The truth : Liquidation is a matter of public record. Not opinion. The club and its corporate identity are indivisible. It is the single entity of club and company that are to be liquidated. Are we to let them redefine the dictionary without challenge?

If the club did not die then why did the fans of the late RFC hold a ” Show liquidation the red card protest” They knew what it meant.

Richard Gough : ” The club I gave blood, sweat and tears for is dead”

Walter Smith : ” I wish the new Rangers Football Club every good fortune”

Jim Traynor : “Rangers as we know them died. Rangers FC are dead”.

Steven Naismith : ” Rangers Football Club no longer exists in its original form ”

Steven Whittaker : ” Whatever form the new club takes”

FIFA : ” After 140 years of history the club was consigned to liquidation. They have subsequently reformed as a new company and have been granted entry to the third division; Scotland’s forth tier.

Charles Green : “If a CVA is not agreed then the history of the 140 year old intuition will be at an end”

    Truth must and will prevail.

    Facts are facts.

Its difficult, boring and tedious, but I feel we must revisit old ground regarding the dead team.

It is much easier and pleasant to focus on the good side of the game. Sunday’s game is an excellent example of what football can achieve and the unbridled enjoyment it can bring while aiding a good cause.

A mega thanks to ALL the players and entertainers who participated. If anyone needed a reminder, we are truly more than a football club.

    HH, Always in Celtic.

  9. i see the tops from Sunday are up for grabs with that wee child from one direction getting the highest bid so far at over £2150 (still 4 days to go) and so quadruple what stilian’s is up for just now. 21. With regards to the Jim Spence affair. For my sins I read Chris Graham’s twitter feed. A horrible individual who while slagging every journo in Scotland would love nothing better than to be a PAID member of the journalistic profession himself. He backed Whyte (until admin) He backed Green (until Wattie resigned) and is now backing McColl and however much I dislike the guy he holds sway with a lot of the hordes. Even a lot of journos debate with him, some like Mathew Lindsay in a vomit inducing way. Lorraine Herbison and Richard Wilson the same while a lot of others play the twitter game with him albeit I think they do it so as he doesn’t get the hordes to turn on them as happened to Jim Spence.
