Strachan, Sutton, Bratislava and losing interest in a job

389

It didn’t occur to me until I read the CQN this morning that today sees a return on active duty to Bratislava for Gordon Strachan and David Marshall. 11 years ago Gordon started his competitive career as Celtic manager against previously unheard of Slovak minnows, Artmedia. The scouting had been done and Gordon was privately confident of progressing but the evening turned into his worst 90 minutes in football.

Six days later Celtic came close to overcoming a 5-0 first leg deficit, but could not add to the scoring after going 4-0 up with 20 minutes remaining.

Gordon went on to win three consecutive titles and took Celtic to the knock-out stage of the Champions League twice, no manager had previously done this once, but he never really shook-off the baggage from that night.

David Marshall wasn’t to blame for what happened on the field but Artur Boruc had signed a few weeks earlier and would soon supplant Marshall as first choice.

Chris Sutton picked up an injury away to Artmedia but I’m not convinced he really took to Gordon Strachan’s attempts to improve training ground habits. The last days of the Martin O’Neill era will never be recalled as a time of intense work. Gordon’s first job was to change this. It didn’t go down well with some senior players.

11 years later you can see the echoes of that time, as Chris wrongly tells the nation Gordon has lost interest in the Scotland job. I’m not a footballer, or manager, so don’t know if it’s possible for someone to lose interest in a job. It’s got me wondering, though, did Chris ever lose interest in a job?

  1. God knows how much more the 36 point one season turnaround against financially doped, improperly registered cheats would have been had MO’N introduced intensity to the training.

We might’ve won a treble as well.

    Oh, wait a minute. .

No wonder Strachan has developed a deep affection for Celtic… If I were him I’d remind folk of that association as often as possible.

His achievements at Celtic are amazing. The results were imo in contrast to the rubbish football he orchestrated.

Celtic success has somehow defined Strachan as a manager yet that phase of his career isn’t reflective of his career as a whole where he has largely been poor. Therefore it is no surprise to me that his arrogance and lack of ability should catch up with him. I knew he was doomed when he compounded this fatal flaw by appointing McGhee as his sidekick- another recurring failure – a man with more clubs than Tiger Woods who shares all of Strachan’s flaws and delusions.

If only WGS had concentrated on being a coach rather than trying to be the funniest smartest man in football/world… Even that is a self delusion – sure he has pro idea the occasional witticism in I terrier but it was always just a wee bit too forced to be natural from my perspective and it was never really that funny.

Time for him to retire and sit on his sofa replaying videos of his time at Celtic..

Almost every newspaper still in existence has ruined its reputation over the last few years.

They are no longer in a fight for supremacy,it’s a struggle for survival.

Pandering to the lowest common denominator of sensationalism, selective reporting and downright lies is their chosen method of doing so.

Maybe they should try a bit of how they built that reputation in the first place;their current MO is suicide.

  5. Not been on for a wee while so just reading back.

My first football boots were presented to me in the late 50’s. Hand me downs.

They were half way up my shin and had bars for studs.

    Horrible things!

My old mhan made me put the boots on then I’d to submerge my booted feet in a bathtub of warm water, then keep them on until they “dried” and shrunk to fit around my foot shape.

    Nightmare!

I played for Dennistoun Waverley in the early 70’s. We were always trying to raise funds for the club, usually selling pontoon tickets.

There was a prize for whoever sold the most.

Anyway, my wee sister worked for the Daily Express in Albion Street and she sold hundreds of them every week, so I won the prize.

This time it was a pair of football boots of my choice to be purchased from the Sportsmen’s Emporium in Glasgow.

I picked a pair of Adidas Santiago, (I think) about 30 quid. A lot of money in those days.

Anyway, they didn’t suit me and I found them uncomfortable and sore after about 6 games.

I was in the Barrows one Sunday (how I loved that place!) and bought a pair of Puma’s for £4.

No frills or padding or fancy stripes.

They were great and lasted me two seasons.

Long story about no very much!

Talking of great German footballers, I went to see Borussia Mönchengladbach (pronounced, as in ‘loch’, easy for Scots), play FC Köln back in ’77, while I was working in then West Germany.

3-1, great match, as you would expect from a team with the likes of Vogts, Bonhof, Stielike, Heynkes and the great Dane Simonssen in the team.

So, thanks to some bad October break planning by certain dominies (tut! tut!), tickets about to become available for next week, and I’m in with a shout of seeing ‘Gladbach at our place, nearly 40 years later.

Same result for the home team’ll do fine!

  7. We should not be surprised at the headlines.we have seen it all before. The thing is,its not just our rag that does this .Look at the everyday front page headlines in the Express.Always about “Immigrants”or some right wing crusade.Pandering to their readership, trying to survive. They all do it.

Funniest thing I read in this mornings guff was that it was an “Investigation”into these tax matters.I can just imagine some raggedy arsed DR reporter arriving on Beckhams,Sir Alex,Linnekers door step looking to investigate their personal tax matters. Can just imagine him leaving Sir Alex house, walking awkwardly, due to the fact he had a hairdryer stuck up his jacksy.

That performance at Wembley by Netzer was one of the greatest displays of the art of the midfield general that I have ever seen, and I’ve seen your moniker inspiration and Paul McStay!

So few occasions that we were able to watch live games back then, it was a real treat to see that!

  11. Dearie me,if you thought the initial headlines were bad, have a gander at the latest.Mug shots of all the Celtic players and management and their Companies House info.

Witch hunt does not even do this justice. If Celtic dont respond big time to this,I dont know what the rag have to do to upset them.I really dont.

You never know,as well as one or two players from the former Rangers, there might be the occasional high-profile board member.

Maybe even a former employee of the rag which “broke” the story?

  16. Not one post between 1:17am and 5:44am looks like the brown shirts have chased a few of the howlers away, very interesting eh Paul ?

Anyhow let’s see how it pans out, when it starts that some will get away with it, and others don’t, because it will happen, I’ll stick around for a while just to observe the CT and GB clique.

In my opinion, I think P67 is being set up, time will tell.

  17. Now I ain’t no expert in investments by individuals or companies etc. Likewise when it comes to the Law regarding possible deliberate lies and/or deliberate attempts to mislead the public when running the so called story in their ” newspaper” about individuals who may at some time been an employee of Celtic FC.

However, I sincerely hope that Celtic’s legal team are at this moment dissecting the allegations made about those individuals who may have been employed by Celtic FC, by this rag ?

My point is this, IF the rags story in anyway even attempts to IMPLY that those investments in film companies, were somehow remotely , PROMOTED, UNDERTAKEN, and SANCTIONED officially by Celtic FC, when in FACT that was NOT the case, then surely Celtic FC will look to sue this rag for Libel ( now known as Defamation of Character) ?

Defamation of Character may not be the correct route to go down, but I am only using this ” charge” as an example of hopefully any action that Celtic FC may pursue legally ? As I said, I ain’t no legal expert.

In the meantime , again if the rags story is without any foundation in as much these investments were the decisions of individuals acting without ANY interference/ contribution by Celtic FC whatsoever, then until such times that Celtic FC pursue this rag legally, as suggested on here, I would fully support CelticFC to ban this rag and it’s employees from Celtic Park, Lennoxtow etc, etc ?

I read the “story” online ,and I could not see any reference that any Celtic FC employee took up these investments on the advice of Celtic FC ?

Therefore, that being the case, is this rag saying that ANY public individual who involves themselves in such investment schemes, that individuals employer ( despite not being involved), are perfectly entitled to be named when such a ” story” is being reported and published ?

Especially, when it clearly appears that this rag are determined to IMPLY that Celtic FC somehow promoted, SANCTIONED etc those investments, when being fully aware that was/is NOT the case ?

    Just my amatuer opinion .

A list of those known to have participated in those “investment plans” would fill every page of the rag in question for several days in the row . — Advertised , promoted and touted as a good thing by those who earn a living from investment / tax planning . . – Politicians , Members of The House of Lords , pop stars , BBC employees , sportsmen and women , lawyers , etc etc … The only interesting aspect of the long running story is why the rag in question has decided to focus on a select target .
