Strachan, Sutton, Bratislava and losing interest in a job

389

It didn’t occur to me until I read the CQN this morning that today sees a return on active duty to Bratislava for Gordon Strachan and David Marshall. 11 years ago Gordon started his competitive career as Celtic manager against previously unheard of Slovak minnows, Artmedia. The scouting had been done and Gordon was privately confident of progressing but the evening turned into his worst 90 minutes in football.

Six days later Celtic came close to overcoming a 5-0 first leg deficit, but could not add to the scoring after going 4-0 up with 20 minutes remaining.

Gordon went on to win three consecutive titles and took Celtic to the knock-out stage of the Champions League twice, no manager had previously done this once, but he never really shook-off the baggage from that night.

David Marshall wasn’t to blame for what happened on the field but Artur Boruc had signed a few weeks earlier and would soon supplant Marshall as first choice.

Chris Sutton picked up an injury away to Artmedia but I’m not convinced he really took to Gordon Strachan’s attempts to improve training ground habits. The last days of the Martin O’Neill era will never be recalled as a time of intense work. Gordon’s first job was to change this. It didn’t go down well with some senior players.

11 years later you can see the echoes of that time, as Chris wrongly tells the nation Gordon has lost interest in the Scotland job. I’m not a footballer, or manager, so don’t know if it’s possible for someone to lose interest in a job. It’s got me wondering, though, did Chris ever lose interest in a job?

  1. Like some on here my first boots were the old brown ones that covered the ankles with widden studs, and then my brother got a pair of Manfield-Hotspur’s with the screw in studs. They were a revelation as they were lightweight, had a padded tongue and did not cover the ankles.

My iPad now diverts my every CQN login to a full-screen advert/”offer” without the option of backing out. It is now impossible for me to log in to CQN using iPad, which works fine for every other site.

    I can take a hint.

  3. Scotland team. No pace. No goal threat. Crap central defenders.

We know only too well the WGS crab football from his latter days at CP.

  4. Even a glass three-quarters full type of guy as me is rather underwhelmed by our starting line up tonight. Come on lads, prove me wrong.

  5. G67- he also started to talk up crap performances , like Saturday, he wasn’t watching the same game as me…

There is no logical reason for those two games being played in December especially looking at the following three months. Makes you wonder if our club have any balls at all !

The SFA apointing that dumplin , Gordon Duffield Smith, as CEO , told us all we needed to know about their plans for Scottish football, hee haw.

*he was a bader appointment, the cretin that ruined Scottish fitba.

Look at the national side’s record through the years, having not entered the WC in ’34 and ’38 they then qualified for the group stages in ’54, 58, missed out in ’62 losing in a playoff to beaten finalists Czechoslovakia, unlucky in ’66 and missing out to the fatherland in 1970

They them made the group stages again in ’74 though ’90 and since then only in ’98 when we provided the bulk (8 players) of the squad as well as John Collins and Derek Whyte not forgetting “should have been” Celts Kevin Gallacher and Billy McKinlay with only 1 token hun, a 32 year old juke box commonly known down Stamford Bridge and White Hart Lane way as medicine box for the amount of time he spent in the treatment room. This was in spite of paw broon being in charge.

And then the mendacity of the ayrshire harold steptoe took over. Like most Tims of my vintage I have no great love for the national side, but don’t wish them ill either.

It took Spain a few years before they recovered from interference of a right wing dictator, how long will it take Scotland.

First football boots was in 1952. A pair of Hotspurs. Wooden toecaps and leather studs. Three nail job.

They disappeared about a year later, but re emerged on my ninth birthday, with replacement Rubstuds.

There was a programme on the telly then called, Ask Pickles, It was hosted by an old radio worthy, Wilfred Pickles, an ee by guum Yorkshire man.

It was a precursor to Jim’ll Fixit (spit) where they took requests from the public and made “dreams come true”.

My father wrote in and asked for Celtic footage. No chance.

Still, I got my rubber studs and also saw Laurel and Hardy at the Empire!!

  10. Am sure that each stud on my first pairs of boots was secured by three pin nails. As studs deteriorated the nails became exposed and threat of injury. So ref inspected studs before the match.

I don’t want LG anywhere near the this Scotland team.

Any confidence the boy has built up will be destroyed playing in that set up. He will be required to run about, trying to get a touch of the ball and then be made the escaped goat for the SFA’s continued failings.

    Baca…,

The wee man always talked up his team, think of the number of very average games we witnessed when he was our manager, yet in every one we played great, for me that’s a very good manager, keep the criticism for the dressing room never single out a player and always bum them up, no point the manager destroying their confidence too now is there, he simply stops using them as much.

Could be his hands are being tied by the SFA on team selection, no long ago he was saying how Tierney was pound for pound easily the best defender in Scottish football, now he’s either no allowed to pick him or does not want to expose the Bhoy to the risk pointless injury with a team of chancers :)

Georgia apart, (and I’ve never figured out how playing over there is supposed to be a stick-on), Scotland’s away form wasn’t too bad in the Euro qualifiers. Hope we get some kind of a result tonight. Not too happy about Sutton’s comments re WGS, probably just waiting on an opportunity to put the boot in. Plenty in the media with the same agenda, not to mention the so-called Tartan Army. Have not got the Griff for 1st goal so happy he is on the bench. Slovenia have the Athletico goalie so shut out against England would not go amiss. As always here’s hoping!
