Strachan, Sutton, Bratislava and losing interest in a job

389

It didn’t occur to me until I read the CQN this morning that today sees a return on active duty to Bratislava for Gordon Strachan and David Marshall. 11 years ago Gordon started his competitive career as Celtic manager against previously unheard of Slovak minnows, Artmedia. The scouting had been done and Gordon was privately confident of progressing but the evening turned into his worst 90 minutes in football.

Six days later Celtic came close to overcoming a 5-0 first leg deficit, but could not add to the scoring after going 4-0 up with 20 minutes remaining.

Gordon went on to win three consecutive titles and took Celtic to the knock-out stage of the Champions League twice, no manager had previously done this once, but he never really shook-off the baggage from that night.

David Marshall wasn’t to blame for what happened on the field but Artur Boruc had signed a few weeks earlier and would soon supplant Marshall as first choice.

Chris Sutton picked up an injury away to Artmedia but I’m not convinced he really took to Gordon Strachan’s attempts to improve training ground habits. The last days of the Martin O’Neill era will never be recalled as a time of intense work. Gordon’s first job was to change this. It didn’t go down well with some senior players.

11 years later you can see the echoes of that time, as Chris wrongly tells the nation Gordon has lost interest in the Scotland job. I’m not a footballer, or manager, so don’t know if it’s possible for someone to lose interest in a job. It’s got me wondering, though, did Chris ever lose interest in a job?

Not giving a toss about scotland….

I was going to tell anyone that if they do use Ebay a lot they should use a quality sniping prog, it’s virtually for free, $6 a year for a mirror service, it’s quality, paid for itself the first day I used it, no need for your computer to even be on, that’s all :-)

Most charge a fair few bob, this one doesn’t.

    Just caught the Scotland game.

No way any player will perform in that pink strip.

Just sign up, you don’t need to pay the $6 a year, but it’s well worth it imo.

Log your bids and sit back, it’s as easy as 123.

If you need any help just ask, I have been using it for a while now, it’s saved me a small fortune, I prob bid on about 25-50 items a day, so it’s a godsend, but even if you hardly use it at all it’s well worth it

    TET,

The Four non RCs were Ronnie, Tommy, Bertie and Willie.

Of the four, only Tommy would have been at CP in 1963…….and he was the worst left back I had ever seen at that time!!

Even though the rot set into the SFA 11 long ago, the last two games proved what we have known for a while.

    TET,

I was in the Central Station one night , after a midweek game at Firhill.

TG was walking across the concourse with his then girlfriend.

His head was stuck in the early edition of the morning paper.

I felt like going up to him and telling him not to read the report..as he was rubbish.

In fairness to Tommy, it wasn’t easy to play behind Jim Kennedy.

Jim was a whole-hearted full back, But a disaster of a left half.

  17. Thom

Oh how the game has changed, imagine calling a player a left half today, or an inside right.

You should have gone up to him, he might have scored a couple more in Milan :-)

Can’t remember Jim Kennedy at all, told you the grey stuff wisny the may west >-)

  18. Heard a good point tonight that more than half the Scotland squad are used to Not winning week in, week out, especially those in Englandshire.

Winning mindsets are the sole property of the big club players.

Problem is that these numpties are picking up wads of cash for being losers. On a regular basis.

How that then transfers to a winning Scotland team is beyond me.

Which brings me to WGS, He has winners in his ranks which you woukd think might increase your chances of a result….but doesn’t use them!

Always start with your best and hope you get lucky with the rest.

    Baffling team selection tonight.

    Nail on head.

If you were a professional mercenary why would you care if your national team wins?

Its the main reason internationals are now worthless.

  20. Mags – yep. Nuff said. Next evolution of International football is around the corner. And it won’t favour the smaller nations.

  23. The article states there were 20 mins left when Celtic went 4 up. If that were true we would’ve scored a 5th. There were only 8 mins left when Beattie got the 4th goal.

    RIP WULLIE DEGNAN.

Re GWS resigning, think it most unlikely since his next ‘gig’ is Wembley. I think the SFA would have to sack him if they want him out as I am sure he won’t want to miss it.BTW,gave up watching them at halftime same as Saturday! Brawn usually gives you mince (or dog meat when I were lhad!)

  25. An Teach Solais on

I notice that the Daily Ranger is running an “investigation” claiming that several Celtic officials including, PL, MON, NFL and a number of former players who invested in the film industry in a tax saving wheeze are now being pursued by HMRC for “tax dodging”

Pathetic rag always denigrating Celtic and looking for every way to align us with thems.

  26. References to some of our players from the 60`s reminded me of a wee incident.

Someone announced that Kennedy ” had been assassinated “.

” Bloody hell! ” said John Callaghan. ” Who would want to kill big Jim? ”

Football is only a game, eh?
