Strachan, Sutton, Bratislava and losing interest in a job

389

It didn’t occur to me until I read the CQN this morning that today sees a return on active duty to Bratislava for Gordon Strachan and David Marshall. 11 years ago Gordon started his competitive career as Celtic manager against previously unheard of Slovak minnows, Artmedia. The scouting had been done and Gordon was privately confident of progressing but the evening turned into his worst 90 minutes in football.

Six days later Celtic came close to overcoming a 5-0 first leg deficit, but could not add to the scoring after going 4-0 up with 20 minutes remaining.

Gordon went on to win three consecutive titles and took Celtic to the knock-out stage of the Champions League twice, no manager had previously done this once, but he never really shook-off the baggage from that night.

David Marshall wasn’t to blame for what happened on the field but Artur Boruc had signed a few weeks earlier and would soon supplant Marshall as first choice.

Chris Sutton picked up an injury away to Artmedia but I’m not convinced he really took to Gordon Strachan’s attempts to improve training ground habits. The last days of the Martin O’Neill era will never be recalled as a time of intense work. Gordon’s first job was to change this. It didn’t go down well with some senior players.

11 years later you can see the echoes of that time, as Chris wrongly tells the nation Gordon has lost interest in the Scotland job. I’m not a footballer, or manager, so don’t know if it’s possible for someone to lose interest in a job. It’s got me wondering, though, did Chris ever lose interest in a job?

  1. Question,

Is ” Instagram” viewed as being part of ” social media” ?

If so, has Barton not ” breached” his Sevco masters intructions to stay off social media when he posted his photo of climbing a mountain, during his suspension ?

Could they use that photo against him to sack him ?

  3. Well, good on the ball comments on the Scotland Team. Many of these guys get paid a lot of money for playing mediocre Football, that’s if they get a game. New strategy required.

Still on the positive side I don’t think it was GS’s worst Managerial performance in Slovakia.

Thought Kieran Tierney was great, so assured for a young man.

Watched it down the Pub, being in England the Slovenia game was on…

    Couple of points…

Slovenia are no mugs, England were very lucky and can thank Mr Hart for the clean sheet.

While watching the Scotland game heard the England co-commentator, Glen Hoddle I think, say “he got on the wrong side of him”.

So looked at the reply, sure enuff, Dier had got on the wrong side of the Slovenia player, had made a tackle… got the ball… but Slonvenia got the foul and Dier got booked for his trouble.

Glen Hoddle… Yeah! The Referee is going to see that as a professional foul.

Interesting as it was almost a carbon copy of Travenier’s Foul on Hayes that led to Maddison’s wonder free-kick in the Aberdeen game. Interesting when Sevco do it, it’s a great tackle and Scotland’s in uproar.

We need to draaaggg Scottish fitbaw into the 21st Century.

We’re the famous Bonnie Scotland and we’re off to Wembeleeee…

You’d be looking forward to that at one time:(

I think this confirms there is some bad news on the way at Sevco…

  6. IMO, there is no way GS will be sacked or walk away from the Scotland job unless England hand out a very heavy defeat next month.

If or when he does go, the SFA can always turn to guys with fantastic proven track records of knowing f##k all about football, but who never let that get in the way of offering up their expert advice to there once masters at rankers and Sevco.

Bhoys and Ghirls, I give you McCoist, Alex ( the alien) Rae, Derek Johnstone to name but few.

  7. A Glasgow multi millionaire aged 87, meets a stunningly beautiful lady aged 23 one Friday night.

A week later they are married, and are on honeymoon in a playboys Paradise somewhere in the Caribbean .

The morning after their wedding night, both are lying by the hotels poolside,

When the wife heads towards the highest diving board at the luxury pool, and stands on that highest edge.

All around the pool, hotel guests and staff are watching .

This beautiful new bride, leaps off the diving board .

Between the board and the water, she shows off fantastic twistandturns, somersaults etc, and enters the water straight as an arrow.

The guests etc including her new 87 year old husband are giving her diving skills the most tremendous ovation, applauding and cheering loudly .

She surfaces, and as she drys herself off the applause and cheers are still ongoing.

Her husband ( still applauding), says, ” My dear I know that we only met just last week, but that dive that you have just performed was truly spectacular, tell me were you once an Olympic diving champion before we met” ?…,……….

” No my love, I used to be a prostitute in Glesga and I used to work both sides of the Clyde” !

  8. Just spoken to a couple of the un-handsome ones in work. They asked if I’d watched the game last night, so I pretended I hadn’t seen any of it – otherwise engaged. I asked what it was like:

    1. KT was excellent, best player on the park

    2. Team selection was baffling; why no Griffiths or Forrest

    3. Both should have been on at half-time

    4. Couldn’t understand why Anya and the other sub (so forgettable they couldnae remember) was on ahead of Forrest

    5. Really miss Scott Brown.

The article you refer to is old news if I am not mistaken. Very old news in fact, 2004 old, and all done and dusted including the court cases. Celtic employees did not ‘net’ benefit from the scheme other than that to which they were entitled.

The Daily Record actually have reported on this scheme several times in the past. Definitely 4 years ago and probably even earlier. I can’t be sure that it is an immutable fact – or not – but I have a wee suspicion that when either things are not going too well south of the river (lately rumoured problems meeting their financial obligations)… or there is an important Celtic game approaching… the Daily Record are known to publish anti-Celtic guff!!!

Thanks for your reply. Now that you mention it I did hear about it some years ago. I suppose George Osborne’s statement re HMRC intensified pursuit of those using tax avoidance schemes now judged to be tax dodges gives them a nail to hang their latest anti-Celtic diatribe. Apparently, David Dodds is also named.

However, a rag to be shunned. HH

  11. The Daily Record story can only be a plant by Level 5 to deflect impending bad news for Sevco. The film tax avoidance scheme has NOTHING to do with Celtic other than some of their employees at the time received advice that the scheme was worth investing in. Celtic collected and PAID ALL taxes due unlike our deceased southside neighbour.

HMRC went after these schemes in 2012 – it was widely reported at the time (Gary Barlow caught most of the flack but Sven Goran Erriksen, Sir Swallex and David Beckham were also investors along with 100s of other high profile people). The Record, Times and Glasgow Herald have all carried stories about it over the last 4 years – which until today ALWAY had headlines that started – “Celtic and Rangers players involved ……”.

Ingenious Film Partnership and Icebreaker lost their case against HMRC in August of this year and are likely to appeal (does that ring a bell??!!) in the meantime the Record see fit to “investigate” news that is 4 years old – I wonder why??!!

    H! H!

  12. From memory and possibly a memory a wee bit torn and tattered by time… Celtic employees bought into the film scheme, they were advised that they would receive XXXX in return as ‘legitimate’ personal tax deductions as private investing individuals (not as employees of Celtic. It had nothing to do with Celtic as a club or and entity or a company or anything else).

The taxman closed the loophole after Celtic employees – as private individuals detached/removed from Celtic PLC and her legal/civil obligations – had bought in. The Celtic employees did get a reduction in their individual tax liabilities, just not as much as they were promised. All monies due the Crown, by private investors – who happened to be Celtic employees – were paid in full by all the private investors – who happened to be Celtic employees.

It is mud-slinging by the Daily Record and nothing else, but there is a reason why the mud-slinging occurred this day. This story was reported more than 4 years ago in the same publication, what motivated them to regurgitate it today?

    I wonder….

  13. Scotland seem to lack the commitment and togetherness fighting spirit of say- Ireland.

The Ireland doesnt have many real stars but it has one factor that Scotland lacks -it is a fully independent nation.

Because lets face it Scotland is lucky to even be allowed to have an international team.

Level 5 is the PR machine run by fat Traynor and issues press releases etc on behalf of Sevco. He used to write for the “paper” you name. HH

  20. On the Scotland match, obviously Strachan should have played those terrific superstars Messrs, Holt , Halliday and Wallace from Sevco, considering the number of times I’m reading and hearing drivel of how Wobbly Warbo should build his team around them ?

These nobodies have achieved nothing, and yet they are being hailed as being saviours of Sevco , and will become legends ?

IMO, KT, Griff wee Jamesy should just simply announce their early retirement from the Scotland squad for ever ?

I hate the thought that our excellent players are having their confidence dented by being part of that scene, all Celtic playrs should just do a “Brooney” ?

GS stated in his interview that the Scotland players play for”nothing” ? Not sure about that, but I have to imagine that he knows better than I do obviously ?
