STRACHAN’S SURPRISE FOR TEENAGE CELT RALSTON

1

ANTHONY RALSTON yesterday received a surprise call-up from Gordon Strachan to join the Scotland squad for training.

The 18-year-old right-back got the nod on the same day his team-mate Callum McGregor was snubbed for a second time for a place in the World Cup squad ahead of the games against Lithuania on Friday and Malta three days later.

Ralston only received his first step up to the Scotland Under-21 pool last week.

The teenager became the seventh Hoops star to be involved as he joined Craig Gordon, Kieran Tierney, Scott Brown, Stuart Armstrong, James Forrest and Leigh Griffiths as Strachan prepared for the crucial double-header.

However, it’s understood Ralston was brought into the session purely to gain experience as opposed to being considered for a full call-up.

The powerful defender scored his first senior goal in green and white during a 5-0 rout of Kilmarnock in the Betfred League Cup earlier this month.

McGregor was overlooked again by Strachan yesterday when he brought in West Brom’s James Morrison to take the midfield place of injured Fulham star Tom Cairney.
