Strain-related injury, the Belgian travels

327

With Leigh Griffiths and Moussa Dembele both approaching full fitness, the continued absence of Odsonne Edouard for the trip to Lithuania should not be too much of a concern, but the fact that our three strikers have all missed games due to strain-related injuries should give the fitness team matters to consider.

There is no surprise the Belgian will travel for the game against Suduva.  He can make his return to the team far away from all but a few fans.  After this game, the two remaining fixtures before most of Europe’s transfer windows close are at home, to Hamilton and Suduva.  If the result in the away European game goes well, I suspect we might not see much of our World Cup hero.

In terms of Jozo, he is now 23 / 24

When he was 21/22 I thought he would develop into a top level centre half.

Now he looks like he is in the wrong movie. His confidence is shot, his focus and concentration is lacking.

Shame as before his run of injuries, I thought he retained all the right attributes. But its all unravelled.

    ——-

Difficult to argue with that. He has a tendency to over-commit. Leads to giving away needless fouls or ending up on the wrong side of the ball.

I think he would have benefited from playing with a more experienced partner who could help him with his decision making.

    Maybe still could.

  2. Jerry Cornelius. Surely you asked the question about famous Belgians with tongue in cheek.. It is usually the little Englander that poses such a question. I am sure you know that Jean-Claude Van Damme, Audrey Hepburn Eddy Merckx, Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne, Peter Paul Rubens and Jan Van Eyck were/are famous Belgians. If you wish to find out about hundreds more who have contributed to science, medicine, etc. look up – List of Belgians – in Wikipedia. You’ll be surprised at how many are famous.

    ==============

to put some meat on that link here are two posts from SFM

From: KdS: Wolhardt’s shares went to Borita (7,500,000). New Trace have 7,500,000. New Trace run by Liu Haifeng. Both connected to DCP Capital Partners, L.P. Ostensibly out of Hong Kong, ultimate holding company registered in Caymen. Related parties. Bigger shareholder than King.

    and separately

The gradual increase in Julian Wolhardt’s influence and investment is an interesting one which I think signals a shift in direction which dependent on your viewpoint could be good or bad for them.

I say this because he’s a different type of investor. The guys keeping them afloat just now ie Taylor, Letham, King, Bennett, Park etc may be successful businessmen but in this instance appear to be treating this as an emotional investment, rich men funding their hobby if you like.

Wolhardt appears to be a non-emotional institutional investor which in a way is good for them as they certainly couldn’t have attracted a non-emotionally invested person to part with their money a couple of years ago with the wounds of the Charles Green debacle still fresh. What Rangers fans will probably not like so much is that no non-emotionally attached investor is going to happily subsidise losses indefinitely as the “Rangers men” had appeared content to.

It explains why Gerrard was appointed and the ability to absorb the cost of his purchases.

“Ostensibly out of Hong Kong “suggests a Take Away or a Chinese Laundry cash businesses, either way it could be the salad days are over.

Or alternatively they might end up trying to compete fairly having stayed in the game by unsustainable methods.

Will Celtic rise to a possible new threat to our domestic dominance but in focusing on countering that threat be guilty of lack of ambition in a competition placed out of our reach by changes in the qualification method and economic circumstances reflected in those changes.

Will Europe become a distraction in the next three seasons and is that a bad thing?

  4. On the basis that Simunovic might trip over the carpet in the hotel and nut Ajer, putting Lustig and Hendry as our CB pairing, if I were BR I’d be taking Boyata to Lithuania regardless of bloggers who do not have to face those risks.

    So there!

Honest competition is good. Bring it on I say.

(fixed that but I think that is what you were meaning). :)

Ah Eddy Merckx, The Cannibal, what a rider, still I believe the only man ever to win all three jerseys at the Tour De France, one of my early sporting heroes:))

Correct. All we’ve got to worry about now is ‘honest’ mistakes. :-0

I don’t think you can argue with eight league titles and four European trophies (2 CLs).

Yes, he spent a lot of money, but he targeted the spend really well, rather than just buying the “best” players.

You’d have to say though that most of the success was in the earlier part of his career.

I think his tactics have become a bit outdated and he hasn’t adapted to the different styles that have evolved over the past six or seven years.

His focus on results and winning trophies leaves no hiding place when the trophies don’t come.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

    I would say it’s more than likely………

  10. Would it not be possible for Dedryck (yes, that’s his name) to sign a contract extension then still go in the next window or the one thereafter? Didn’t Stan do something similar?

had hoped for the silver bullet, still do

Perhaps PL’s recent keenness to talk to the press is a signal of hope……

  12. Don’t know many famous Belgians apart from Plastic Bertrand, but….

Played in a volleyball tournament in a little town called Roselar (sp) when i was a lot younger, stayed in a school which was used to house participants. Sleeping bags and camp beds.

On returning home, when i unrolled my sleeping bag to wash it, i found a Belgian Street sign.

    Hoogleedsesteenweg.

No-one owned up to putting it there, but i still have it, more than 40 years later, just in case they ask for it back. I still feel guilty about the Belgians who stayed in Hoogleedsesteenweg unable to get home for weeks until they replaced the sign. ?

More recently, so did Stu Armstrong.

    Hail Hail

  14. Re Julian Wolhardt, I have highlighted this guy on more than one occasion on here and in discussions with others since day one of him buying half of MASH’s shares and intimated my suspicions that his investment and involvement was for one reason only, that is, the ole Chinese laundry. Maybe the penny is beginning to drop in other quarters now. No?

  15. If BR wants McKenna, put a deadline on any bid, say 48 hours, then move on.Can’t afford to get strung along till the 31st.

    —————

Boyata has refused to talk a new contract for the past 12 months, can’t see him changing his mind now unless we offered him a huge pay rise.

Signing a new contract will reduce the number of clubs interested in him and reduce his new wage at his potential new club.

Of course there are other hazards out there. I read of the misfortune of an un-named man, who on visiting a show by Anish Kapoor, in Porto no less, found out that her work, ‘Descent into Limbo’, was not a black circle painted on the floor but in fact was a bona fide 2.5m deep hole. Could it have been our eponymous Marvin (‘Morton’) Comppner? If so, limbo for him, and more purgatory for us.

  19. Considered by many the definitive version of the Belgian Strong Pale Ale style, Duvel is brewed with Pilsner malt and dextrose, and hopped with Saaz hops and Styrian Goldings, the yeast still stems from the original culture of Scottish yeast bought by Albert Moortgat during a business tour of the U.K. just after World War I.
