Strain-related injury, the Belgian travels

327

With Leigh Griffiths and Moussa Dembele both approaching full fitness, the continued absence of Odsonne Edouard for the trip to Lithuania should not be too much of a concern, but the fact that our three strikers have all missed games due to strain-related injuries should give the fitness team matters to consider.

There is no surprise the Belgian will travel for the game against Suduva.  He can make his return to the team far away from all but a few fans.  After this game, the two remaining fixtures before most of Europe’s transfer windows close are at home, to Hamilton and Suduva.  If the result in the away European game goes well, I suspect we might not see much of our World Cup hero.

I v much agree with jobo on his agreement with you.

Ultimately few clubs, if any, make significant money do they? They are certainly the vehicles through which individuals make copious amounts of cash. And significant – in other countries, huge – amounts flow through them. But the final profits made by ‘the company’ would hardly been seen as the best or wisest investment for ROI?

So, if we accept that, could we ask the Focus of investment to be on the footballing aspect?

To me the CH ‘problem’ revolves round ‘Did BR get the money to buy CHs’ or ‘Did BR pick some ‘Below Standard CHs’? In either case we have ended up with inexperienced Bhoys whom I am sure he never envisaged playing together in SPFL games never mind Chammpions League qualifiers.

I had heard we were interested in McKenna since away back in early June but Our interest seems out of step with other targets and declarations from the manager of needing quality.

Recent years have unearthed Armstrong from a list of other Scottish based signings. Brown would probably be the last one. McKay-Steven, Allen, Christie, Hayes, Ciftci, Hendry, Bain more recently with Hartley, Robson, Flood etc in years gone by.

The later 2 of 3 would probably be deemed to be successful but the jury is out on the rest. In fact Hartley and Robson represented the best of that lot by some distance with Brown a few rungs ahead of those two.

Do I can forgive those who didn’t think McGinn was value for money despite the fact this was probably based on a low learned opinion on more recent signings from Scottish clubs. I’d suggest (having watched McGinn very closely) that he would have gone on to surpass Hartley and Robson and perhaps emulated Brown.

That said, when considering McKenna at over £3.5m versus a player from say Germany, France or Italy at a similar age … not sure he has the ability to represent value for that money or do what is required to replace Boyata. Moreover, at £3.5m plus about £15k per week compared to Fabian Schar a Swiss international who signed for Newcastle from Deportivo la Corunna?

My view is still that Boyata is a bomb scare and if we had him in Athens we may have contrived to leak those goals in the same way or a more comedic way.

I was encouraged by the clubs identication of McGinn but not so encouraged by the pursuit of what appears to be a big standard centre back when better value could be had elsewhere. This is regardless of who identified him and who didn’t pursue/ sign other targets.

I still feel in my gut that we will sign a Man City CB on loan.

We are in that area again where the club see Gamboa (on the face of it) performing well and then don’t prioritise the full back position. Tierney could also move to right back!

Then centre back replacement for Boyata becomes a priority with a midfielder we clearly identified and need after Armstrong has left sits on the back burner!

It seems like a calamity we repeat and compound in every transfer window apart from when we change manager. Why why why do we never sort the team and the known issues prior to qualifiers?

Absolutely. He is not one to look to for leadership or organisation. It makes the rise of KT and Ajer’s conversion to CB all the more remarkable, that they have done so in spite of the clumsy Belgian contriving to commit at least 2 unforced errors per half. On a good day.

Great post. Recognition of the problem ——thinking thru a solution ; which as we know it will be extremely difficult to achieve ( in the next years ).

The tension you mention between the factions / departments is lopsided. The CEO is in one camp and they call the shots.

Only one outcome if the status quo remains —-Brendan leaves. Lawwell will ensure it’s a puppet next time.

  21. if any other team in Scotland was linked with McKenna you would be lucky if fee was anywhere near 6 figures , its a big NO from me.

  22. Regarding McKenna, in my opinion we should wait 4.5 years and sign him on a pre-contract, he’ll definitely be willing to wait for us. Also by that time he should have recovered from his injury and have become a seasoned professional.

  26. CELTIC have failed in a £3.5million bid for Aberdeen’s Scotland international centre-back Scott McKenna.

The Dons booted out the offer yesterday and claimed they value their 21-year-old defender at a staggering £10million!

Jobo Baldie @ 7:27 am and Jamesgang @ 7:38 am,

Thanks for the agreement, its complex but there things we can all identify as going wrong…

’…So, if we accept that, could we ask the Focus of investment to be on the footballing aspect?

Well yes, of course there are several capital projects on the go and I don’t have an issue with any of them. The PLC are doing their job in adding value to Celtic and looking at further income streams.

Yet I would not see the investment in the football team as being naïve or idealist, the largest most “money making” ventures in football are also the ones that spend most on footballers. Ok our model is different but as Lenny and now Brendan proved, if you are successful on the pitch you make more money and attract better players, then you can add value and sell those better players… Ronny won some Championships but his relative ineptitude in this regard only reinforces the argument.

Saint Stivs @ 7:55 am, and Go tell the Spartim @ 7:59 am

Thanks… I can’t see it myself, but if this debacle is down to egos or personal enrichment it will be a body blow to Celtic.

Thanks – I’ve tried to look at this objectively so don’t want to get too controversial on this at the moment many aspects seem opaque but the issues are overly complex.

The centre half situation is a great exemplar…

If the football department got a budget to spend say in January for the UCL qualifiers, spent it, got in prospects instead of the quality and experience needed then there is of course an issue. How is it resolved..? Does the football department come and say – in light of Compper’s injury and Henry is not up to speed yet and Boyata hasn’t signed the extension to his contract so it looks like he’s off. Here’s a list of potential CH’s we need to get one early doors for the UCL qualifiers…

What is the reaction? Is it really, you’ve spent that budget and your list of potential recruitments is rubbish so no can do… hard to believe.

Now if we assume and it’s a huge assumption that the football department can’t be trusted with recruitment, ergo managing their squad what is the solution?

    a) The football department is looked at to see where any issues lie and rectify them, if that means changes in personnel so be it but get things right for the qualifiers

    b) The commercial department sees the football department’s incompetence is costing them money so they run their own player recruitment process independently.

None of this makes any sense, yet something is patently wrong and like the above when you view any these scenarios you find fundamental issues and real head scratchers.

The Battered Bunnet @ 9:04 am,

    Hill 16 @ 9:34 am,

Thanks – as I’ve said it really needs sorting, I can see no room for ‘winners’ in this as we certainly don’t want to throw the baby out with the bath water… for me losing Brendan would be tragic, he seems the ideal football operations manager as his experience from the Academies to the top world stars gives him an insight into Celtics football set-up and requirements second to none.

If he has issues and blind spots and there not obvious to me we should remember – Einstein had trouble reading:)
