Strict Liability, for you, but not for me

454

The Scottish Government yesterday suggested the SFA act unilaterally to introduce Strict Liability on the game, making clubs liable for the actions of their lunatic fringe, or else the government would impose measures. This is a curious stance for a government who are not prepared to accept ANY liability for their own lunatic fringe.

When the lunatics in charge only see other people’s lunatics, we’re all in trouble. And it should be noted, lunatics inhibiting a democracy cause vastly more damage than football fans fighting on a field once every 36 years.

The notion of Strict Liability in itself is a separate question, but I have serious concerns at the increasingly right wing, and selective, attitude to law and control at Holyrood.

If you want to impose Strict Liability on football, accept if for yourself first. Then come back after a year’s experience and talk to us about football.  This, of course, will never happen.  Not all lunatic fringes are equal.

Mats Nilloc if you feel the urge to have a politically based rant why not go on one of the many more suitable blogs and rant until you’re heart is content. Would you not prefer to keep politics of what is primarily a Celtic blog. H H Hebcelt

Mats unquestionably indulged in a ‘Whitabootery’ political rant.

However in this case he was aided and abetted by Paul 67.

Mats. For good or bad, the wider population of Scotland recently showed its support for the SNP.

A wee bit naive, I thought all the evils you list would have been dealt with duly quick when we voted to be All Together.

As for football needing sorted out. As regulars here will be aware, that at least three times in the last year, I have, without getting anywhere, directly approached the SFA on football related sectarian matters.

We may not like the OB Act as a vehicle for change in football, but change is needed.

When politicians meddle in football affairs then politics is intertwined with football. When laws are made to even up the score then it’s political. Whether we like it or not.

I dont think the real dispute is between you and I. I know that most mineshafters and happyclappers want the Club to address the cheating…. I think most of us agree on that.

I just am not convinced that those running the club want that issue addressed. And failing to address the issues, at some point becomes tacitly accepting the status quo.

And I cant accept that from a Club that was supposed to stand for something.

What is the old saying? corruptio optimi pessima – the corruption of the best is the worst.

And I recognize that my witholding a few hundred dollars isn’t going to change the Board’s strategy. But, I can no longer support a regime which, to my mind, is working against the ethos of Celtic and its supporters.

For me, continuing to financially support those who seem to want to sweep the issues under the rug, is tacitly supporting that whitewash.

Maybe I am old fashioned (some would say a romantic … others a dinosaur), but Celtic used to mean something… under the present stewards, that something is being lost. And unless the fans do something, I’m afraid that something that made Celtic special will be irretrievably lost.

If I think the game is a bogey, and that Celtic are part of those shenanigans, then I am not walking away from Celtic; the Celtic I loved has already walked away from me and most of the supporters. All I am doing is recognizing that fact.

Only Celtic can prove that it is on the side of the supporters. They have had ample time to do something. And unless and until they do, I wont give them more money.

Had Celtic stood up and said something when all of this started, I believe that we would be in a very different and better situation today.

I’m not saying anyone has to agree with me. Just explaining how/what I feel.

Generations of fans through the years have probably felt at odds with the board (s) and felt as you do now (probably away back to when we cut right back on the charity donations in the very early days).

It is up to the support to hold the board accountable and make sure we remain something special.

  26. In the past we had rampant bigotry on the terraces and nothing much was done about there were arrests here and there but on it went.

Then we had the OBFA designed to ‘even things up’ and also introduce laws to deal with the online nature of a lot of bigotry. Many cried foul and said (correctly) that it was shambolic and besides laws already existed to deal with these crimes. It proved as before to be wholly ineffective and on it continued.

So what now? Police Scotland for all their many ineptitudes (and there are many) are correct to say that it’s not practical to try and arrest thousands of fans all chanting something they shouldn’t.

That to me leaves two options:

    1) the ref stops the game until it stops and/or abandons – that would I’m sure go down very well in the stands

    2) strict liability. Which might actually work.

This is where we diverge. You see Celtic as “the team on the park” and I get that. I just happen to believe Celtic is much more than that. And, for me, the team on the park is crucial, but probably not the most important part of Celtic. As Tommy said, Celtic is a cause.

And those that run the club sell market it as ‘more than a club’ … all I am saying is that, if they want to hold Celtic out as ‘more than a football team’ when they are taking our money, then they should be held to the same standard when they are running the club.

As I say, football is a big part of Celtic obviously, and winning football is even better. But, even winning trophies will never be what Celtic is about for me.
