Strict Liability, for you, but not for me

454

The Scottish Government yesterday suggested the SFA act unilaterally to introduce Strict Liability on the game, making clubs liable for the actions of their lunatic fringe, or else the government would impose measures. This is a curious stance for a government who are not prepared to accept ANY liability for their own lunatic fringe.

When the lunatics in charge only see other people’s lunatics, we’re all in trouble. And it should be noted, lunatics inhibiting a democracy cause vastly more damage than football fans fighting on a field once every 36 years.

The notion of Strict Liability in itself is a separate question, but I have serious concerns at the increasingly right wing, and selective, attitude to law and control at Holyrood.

If you want to impose Strict Liability on football, accept if for yourself first. Then come back after a year’s experience and talk to us about football.  This, of course, will never happen.  Not all lunatic fringes are equal.

I was born in 1959, and during my lifetime, politics and sport have a destiny that is forever entwined. The following list will not be exhaustive, but off the top of my head:

The Summer Olympics of 1964 marked the start of South Africa’s long exile from major international sports, due to its apartheid society.

The 1968 Olympic’s saw black American athletes make black power gestures on the winners podium.

4 years later, the Munich Olympic’s were overshadowed by the murder of Israeli athletes by Palestinian extremists.

There were politically motivated boycotts of the Olympics in Moscow, Los Angeles and Seoul.

Various touring rugby and cricket teams have had controversial tours of South Africa, either completed or stopped by protests.

Football sparked off an actual war between Honduras and El Salvador in the late 60’s

Club football all over the world has political allegiances and undercurrents, such as Athletic Bilbao (Basque Nationalism), Barcelona (Catalan Nationalism), SC Bastia (Corsican Nationalism) and

    Beitar Jerusalem (Jewish Nationalism)

Indeed, our own club were founded as a charitable response to a political issue.

Don’t involve Politics with Sport? Difficult, if the history of sport is anything to go by.

Hail Hail………………and Viva the Revolution!!! ;))

Excellent post! As much chance (or wisdom) of removing politics from sport as removing sport from progressive society. It is all about being grown up.

  4. Interesting few days on Cqn. The RES12 bhoys get themselves up and out of the trenches only to face friendly fire. These guys have spent a load of time and effort on this issue and it’s not for the benefit of their health or marriages. i don’t know how it’s going to turn out but whatever happens these bhoys have attempted to do something for the greater good. And for that we should be thankful.

Where did i say that? Stay in your Ivory Tower with your typewriter, maybe Google ‘credibility ‘ as well. You do not fool everyone.

  17. !!BADA BING!!:

Although if you really want an answer I’ll give you one.

As I’ve been accused, from time to time, of trying to tell other Celtic fans what to do and what to think – instead of simply asking them to weigh things up and judge for themselves – I would stipulate that although an arrogant act in itself, it would be nothing compared to how off-the-scale full of it I’d be if I was telling someone to keep their money in their pockets whilst I was giving the club my own.

Put simply; I wouldn’t ask anyone to do anything I wasn’t prepared to do myself :)

Not that it’s any of your concern or anyone else’s but if I don’t buy one for the coming season it’ll be because my personal circumstances are about to change radically.

Let’s just say that one of my “ideological objections” no longer applies.

Another is on the way – well on the way – to being permanently resolved.

In short, I decided it was time to come home a few weeks ago.

The timing is all that’s left.

Last time I go “on the record” explaining myself about any of that. I’ve never hidden the fact that I self exile myself from Celtic Park. It’s not a secret, and this isn’t the first time I’ve heard that it makes me “less” a Celtic fan than someone else. And it was bollocks then and it’s bollocks now and whatever I decide to do this season (and certainly next) I hope I’ll never have such a condescending view of those who, for whatever reason, decided not to go to games.

It was a difficult decision and sitting in this chair where I’m writing this now, I can tell you there were times when I was honestly scunnered with myself for making it; Tony Watt’s Roy of the Rovers moment against Barcelona was just one of them.

I missed stuff. A lot of stuff. Because whatever you believe, a decision to stay away from somewhere you love is an act of sacrifice, but one I’ve never cried the blues over.

I’ve never held it against me the way other people do.

A wee comment on the Celtic fan going to games or not (whatever the reason) this blog at least gives us all a wee input on our team…..manager guy in my old work, season ticket since whenever, never had a good word to say about us, ever, a few year back he was getting tore into everything Celtic so I bite and answer him back, he gives it “whit, at least I go to the games and put money into the club” my retort was your last 12 season tickets haven’t even paid Josh Thompson’s monthly wage this month” …..I know for a fact he has always been a Celtic fan and always will be, but it takes all sorts, I don’t think there is any better fan than the next Celtic fan…… When it comes to us being idiots well that can be judged, this aimed solely at myself, am as much of an idiot as the next

JF-I posted that if guys have issues which mean they can’t go to CP and support the team, fair enough. I hope your own stuff gets settled quickly and amicably. ‘Condescending ‘ is a wee bit of a cheap shot,my post was to encourage bhoys,if they can manage,is to try and leave issues with PL,the Club or whatever, try and back Brendan and the team on the park. Thanks for reply, see you at CP soon hopefully HH

Yeah I read that too mate.

Listen, the atmosphere amongst our fans hasn’t been this good in a long, long time. Let’s not spoil it now fighting with each other over daft points like that.

My own circumstances are about to change in a very pleasant way :) I’m moving in with my good lady, which, unfortunately (if I might use such a word in those circumstances!) necessitates me leaving Glasgow behind for sunny Fife. Everything’s up in the air a bit.

Brendan’s appointment answer some major questions. I think we’re going to enjoy the way Resolution 12 spins out. I see good times ahead. When I wrote my first On Fields piece after the Sevco cup semi I called it The Storm Before The Calm. We’re well into the calm zone now and they’re entering the storm.

Things are looking really, really sweet :)
