Strict liability

2246

Strict liability: if football fans misbehave in a stadium, their club is held liable.

This is the Uefa way and is how most European national associations conduct their business.  Not in Scotland.  In Scotland there is a belief that some problems are so entrenched, it would be unfair to penalise clubs, who do whatever they can to discourage fans from, for example, setting off flares.  Here, a club which does everything it can to stop an errant act is not held liable.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say some clubs fear strict liability.  Celtic cannot stop people setting off flares, they take steps to discourage it, so, the argument goes, why fine or otherwise punish Celtic?

It’s a cop out.  I’d hate to see points deducted, leagues decided, because a club was proxy for a strict liability offender, but everything else is on the table.  Clubs are poor at policing their own, there are in-built inhibitors which make doing so difficult.  Strict liability takes the issue out of their hands.  Stands will be shut, ticket allocations withdrawn, but almost certainly only once.

Flare carriers are the most difficult to police as they are the act of a small number of individuals, who are able to protect themselves [although not their club]by hiding in a crowd, but strict liability would end offensive chanting by thousands overnight.

For that, it’s worth it.

Only caught last night’s Motherwell game in highlights.  Newco looked like the Rangers I remember from the early 80s.  Despite being a mid-table mediocre outfit, Rangers were, and played like, a big team back then.  They attacked with all they had, but John Greig was often out-thought by the manager of a small club, who could organise a defence and break with purpose.

Football tactic students will be captivated by the second leg.  Do Newco go on the attack, and risk the same outcome, or do they learn to live within their limitations, hoping to tempt Motherwell beyond theirs?  The team which gets it wrong could lose by three goals.  It’s a good job Newco didn’t screw around with the ticket allocation, they’ll need that away end packed and energetic.

Thanks for all the feedback on the new issue of CQN Magazine, lots of great reading.

Thompson is a master of game management. He decides when to let the game flow or not.

He’s very clever at it,rarely can he be faulted on strict application of the laws of the game.

Of course, now and again he can be prone to an honest mistake but he doesn’t make many over a season(!)

They only way that Well will overcome the honest mistakery….is by scoring goals.

The Well manager and players will be aware what Craig Thompson can do.

My guess….is that he will try to contrive a controversial moment, that leads to a sending off.

He wants to be centre of attention, and it will def be the Craig Thompson Show once again.

    There will be Red Cards.

Hopefully, Well will have smashed them by then.

I watched the Zombiefest turn into a fiasco on Thursday, as a surprisingly professional Motherwell hit them with rapid breaking football to take them completely by surprise. In the the dignity of it all, they had underestimated a side from a league above and they had clearly been told to go out and beat up Motherwell, because they were superior,

They effectively blew the tie at a crowded Big Hoose .

Why am I still nervous , then?

We’re doing the devils work and listening and looking for ways the old Rangers would have been certain to turn this round, it’s all in the propaganda born from the moment the McGregor goal was labelled a lifeline, and not a consolation.

Motherwell are an infinately better side than the team that finished third in the Championship, and Stephen McManus’s mistake wasn’t punished at 0-0, because it was fate, just like the three Motherwell scored.

I’m going out now, I may be sometime.

Delaney’s, I’m certain Polaris would have loved to see lovely green and white hooped tops to make his day.

The last I heard he was a post man in Drumchapel or Knightswood and has a season ticket for the second club to play out of Ibrox.

Interesting that the Washington Post have had a pop at the SFA and Hun corruption.

I really hope they investigate it.

Maybe a wee e.mail might assist them in their enquiries.

Im waiting for a reaction from the SFA.

Wonder what they have to say about it?

Roy Croppie, how was the Glasgow Uni CSC dinner on Friday?

I had an invite to go but couldn’t make it unfortunately.

A crowd of us were at the twentieth anniversary dinner years ago, and the wonderful and much missed, Sean Fallon, gave a speech which left many at out table close to tears due to Sean’s passionate speech about our team and club.

  9. With the mullet recalling Boyd and elbows , you can rest assured that we will see plenty of thuggish challenges and a few dives if things are not going sevco’s way.

Dream scenario would be a last minute skippy goal to prevent the 3 year old club from getting into SPL for the first time .

Just got sent a caption of that lying rag the Sunday Mail from 3 years ago. Front page scaremongering, FIVE SPL CLUBS DEAD WITHIN A MONTH. And to think Reagan and Doncaster went along with it, and are still in the job. Nearly as untouchable as the shameless Ogilvie.

That has been mentioned before . Perhaps DCK hasn’t got deep enough pockets to fund the sevco revolution if they go up.

  16. 4 – 0 Motherwell and therefore an aggregate score of 7-1 would be most nicest of all,

  21. What is the Stars on

The problem about today is no matter what spin anyone puts on it motherwell are not very good. Their defence looked very rocky and Sevco in fairness could have scored the first goal the other night which would probably have changed everything. That said Sevco are also not very good ( to say the least) and if motherwell get their tactics right it could be easy . I think Sevco will fail to be promoted. …which of course is a disaster for Scottish football

..but a great day for the human race.
