Strict liability

Strict liability: if football fans misbehave in a stadium, their club is held liable.

This is the Uefa way and is how most European national associations conduct their business.  Not in Scotland.  In Scotland there is a belief that some problems are so entrenched, it would be unfair to penalise clubs, who do whatever they can to discourage fans from, for example, setting off flares.  Here, a club which does everything it can to stop an errant act is not held liable.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say some clubs fear strict liability.  Celtic cannot stop people setting off flares, they take steps to discourage it, so, the argument goes, why fine or otherwise punish Celtic?

It’s a cop out.  I’d hate to see points deducted, leagues decided, because a club was proxy for a strict liability offender, but everything else is on the table.  Clubs are poor at policing their own, there are in-built inhibitors which make doing so difficult.  Strict liability takes the issue out of their hands.  Stands will be shut, ticket allocations withdrawn, but almost certainly only once.

Flare carriers are the most difficult to police as they are the act of a small number of individuals, who are able to protect themselves [although not their club]by hiding in a crowd, but strict liability would end offensive chanting by thousands overnight.

For that, it’s worth it.

Only caught last night’s Motherwell game in highlights.  Newco looked like the Rangers I remember from the early 80s.  Despite being a mid-table mediocre outfit, Rangers were, and played like, a big team back then.  They attacked with all they had, but John Greig was often out-thought by the manager of a small club, who could organise a defence and break with purpose.

Football tactic students will be captivated by the second leg.  Do Newco go on the attack, and risk the same outcome, or do they learn to live within their limitations, hoping to tempt Motherwell beyond theirs?  The team which gets it wrong could lose by three goals.  It’s a good job Newco didn’t screw around with the ticket allocation, they’ll need that away end packed and energetic.

Thanks for all the feedback on the new issue of CQN Magazine, lots of great reading.

David Low sat behind me at the – Save Our Celts meeting – at the Shettleston halls in the early 90’s and, I think he had a toddler with him…toddler was playing with the car-keys and, kept dropping them onto the floor(very annoying)and nor once did he take the keys off the toddler during the speeches from the stage which included…

I didn’t say that. I was questioning those claiming Sevco will be promoted because of the MIB and provided evidence to show that they had not done them any favours in the 5 previous play-offs.

Of course the referees favour Rangers over Celtic. Always have done. But here’s the rub. Celtic ain’t in the play-offs.

Did the Half Marathon this morning along with daughter and her pal all delighted with our sub 2 hour times but we definitely got the best of the conditions as the wind was getting up as we finished.

Baltic hanging around at the finish as well so we made an early exit and now might set off for a wee libation and a wee peek at the play off.

  6. Expect referee to do his best for the establishment team as usual and while TV might limit him to the snide/50-50 type of favouritism, don’t discount a full GIRUY blatant display a la McCurry, Dundee Utd.

If ref can swing it he will but hopefully Skippy (who wouldn’t be playing if biased ref Dallas had his way )can score first and make it Masonic mission impossible.

Fair enough Tom…..there hasn’t been too much dubious stuff in the play-offs.

But, I do believe……that Craig Thompson is capable of anything…..you could easily compile a dossier of his previous adventures,

However, If Well play as the did in the first leg…..it wont matter.

The furore over the worst refereeing decision in years …the SC semi non pen …lasted …well…it did not last …because there wasn’t one

Imagine if that decision had been to CFC advantage or to Sevco detriment …

  10. bournesouprecipe on

You won’t get many Celtic fan members, of the referees are fair in Scotland brigade because they haven’t given a dodgy decision merely because the chance hasn’t yet arisen.

Bobby Madden had a steady less than subtle influence of the flow of play especially when Raingurs were pressing late in the second half he blew for a mystery foul when Motherwell won the ball while two on one, and continually ruled 50/50’s in Rainjurs favour.

Craig Thomson’s career is littered with honest mistakes and given the semblance of a chance he’ll call it for Rainjurs.

Why would Celtic supporters be praising referee’s for not disallowing Rainjurs goals that were offside, or praising them for being seemingly impartial?

Maybe you should analyse more closely before commenting.

You might well say that mibbery hasn’t been a factor so far. I disagree.

Name me one example of a decision going wrongly against the huns and I could give a hunner which went the other way.

My first europeam trip was on the uni bus. Delaney’s was on the same trip but we travelled separately if that makes sense.

I was with some pals I had gone to school with and he was with pals from his school.

Average Joe Miller is a top bloke, real good guy. I was disappointed he wasn’t at Paul Larkin’s asterisk years showing two weeks ago at Celtic Park. l haven’t seen or spoke to Joe for too long.

The Motherwell 0 Celtic 7 post you posted earlier was our league game before the above euro trip I went on.

Missed the Jam at Ingliston because of my first euro trip but was well worth it.

I’m not really one for buying into the conspiracy but the d Utd game and caley game made me think

Re the sevco hibs early whistle was there any sub/injuries in additional time or even a goal scored which should have added time?

I think it’s just bad referring tbh …even when they are good they are ordinary

  16. jorges barnet on

Hope Motherwell finish the job they began on thursday and truthfully can’t see them collapsing.

I know several of my fellow CQNers here are nervous about Craig Thomson but I remember in the League cup final against them at Hampden he awarded a penalty for Jelavic (spelling??) going down then changed his mind gave us a free kick or goal kick and carded Jelavic so I can’t see there being a soft penalty and red card in the game at least. But maybe I’m too optimistic.

  17. BSR –

Surely the point is, if the referee on Thursday was favouring Rangers, he would have allowed an offside goal to stand. You claim they are cheats. How do you cheat if you give the right decision every time? Major flaw in your logic there mate.

The comments of the Well manager before the first-leg are significant, he was fully aware of the possibilities of honest mistakery.

    IMO Craig Thompson….loves a drama.

He causes it, then steps back to let it unravel.
