Strict liability

Strict liability: if football fans misbehave in a stadium, their club is held liable.

This is the Uefa way and is how most European national associations conduct their business.  Not in Scotland.  In Scotland there is a belief that some problems are so entrenched, it would be unfair to penalise clubs, who do whatever they can to discourage fans from, for example, setting off flares.  Here, a club which does everything it can to stop an errant act is not held liable.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say some clubs fear strict liability.  Celtic cannot stop people setting off flares, they take steps to discourage it, so, the argument goes, why fine or otherwise punish Celtic?

It’s a cop out.  I’d hate to see points deducted, leagues decided, because a club was proxy for a strict liability offender, but everything else is on the table.  Clubs are poor at policing their own, there are in-built inhibitors which make doing so difficult.  Strict liability takes the issue out of their hands.  Stands will be shut, ticket allocations withdrawn, but almost certainly only once.

Flare carriers are the most difficult to police as they are the act of a small number of individuals, who are able to protect themselves [although not their club]by hiding in a crowd, but strict liability would end offensive chanting by thousands overnight.

For that, it’s worth it.

Only caught last night’s Motherwell game in highlights.  Newco looked like the Rangers I remember from the early 80s.  Despite being a mid-table mediocre outfit, Rangers were, and played like, a big team back then.  They attacked with all they had, but John Greig was often out-thought by the manager of a small club, who could organise a defence and break with purpose.

Football tactic students will be captivated by the second leg.  Do Newco go on the attack, and risk the same outcome, or do they learn to live within their limitations, hoping to tempt Motherwell beyond theirs?  The team which gets it wrong could lose by three goals.  It’s a good job Newco didn’t screw around with the ticket allocation, they’ll need that away end packed and energetic.

Thanks for all the feedback on the new issue of CQN Magazine, lots of great reading.

Skippy to score the goal that sinks the Ship of fools.

  2. Play-off predictions, Motherwell to have at least one player sent off, and the new wee plucky team to get not one but two dodgy penalties…..Result, the new team will still be playing 2nd tier fitba(cheating) next season

Why. Are THEY going to miss one?

Bobby Murdoch, we have had worse seasons before and after but the 77/78 season was terrible after the highs of the previous season.

People relate that rubbish season to Kenny Dalglish leaving and it played its part but losing Pat Stanton and Alfie Conn against United in the first game of the season against United than Danny about six weeks later against Hibs, played a big part in that awful season.

Kenny, Danny, Pat and Alfie were our best four footballers in the 76/77 season, Alfie from February when he signed.

I sometimes get criticised for saying Alfie Conn was one of our best footballers during the 76/77 season. He was on the same wavelength, football wise, as Kenny, Danny and Pat.

Good players play well in ok teams but good players play far better when they have players on the same wavelength as them on the pitch.

Yesterday’s cup final refereeing actually lent support to the ‘incompetent rather than corrupt’ view on our refs. The top man in UEFA s eyes proceeded to tackle a Falkirk player on the edge of his own box, measure out 8 yard walls, ignore advantage, play advantage when their was none among other ‘mistakes’ both teams appeared to suffer almost equally.

    That’s not to say that Craig Thomson isn’t a cheating h#n :)

  7. Hope this goes down as Impotent Sunday and the SFA, Mibs and MSM fail to get IT up!

Adopting 3 monkeys logic – hear no evil (no radio), see no evil (no TV) and speak no evil (can I have a bet on Motherwell).

Off oot – till its done and dusted.

It will down to brother thompshun today IMO, he is a master at his job, watch him break up the play, everything will favour the hun.

I just hope that the Well players want it more, their lifes are riding on this game.

Whatever, what will be will be.

  9. Well, it will be an interesting game today.

Hope the predicted honest mistake(s) don’t determine the outcome of the game.

Wouldn’t rule out a Meekins size oversight. If that happens and Newco are promoted then I really fear for the credibility of Scottish Football – think many will be sickened.

Still there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be a good game and the best team wins.

    That’s what I’m hoping for.

You misunderstood. That was in response to BSR who said you can’t praise the referee for disallowing an offside goal. I said, the only way they can cheat is by giving them an offside goal. So if, as BSR was suggesting, they never get a decision wrong, when do they cheat?

My missus just said they gave Willie Carson a box to stand on, should give that to Strachan, told her the wee man is a giant of a person !

  13. Motherwell’s pace is the key to this one. The Rangers will try to start fast and get the early goal, but will run out of steam. I’ll settle for 0 – 0 at half time right now.

Although a couple of Motherwell goals would be very welcome of course.

Think it has taken me about two days to catch up on here. Learned a lot too, The West of Scotland is a terrible place, Falkirk is too even if it is more east than west.

Read the report by the Advisory Group re Sectarianism in Scotland, but wonder now if said report, submitted to Edinburgh in December 2013 has been overtaken by subsequent events, much discussed on here. That said see TBB’s post on it a couple of days back. The major problem is the attempt to treat marches by the Orange Order with Republican processions as equivalent when in fact they are simply non pareil. That is the problem with using surveys. “What do you think o they Republican Marches?” “Oh they’re terrible, they should be banned”.

  17. I feel really bad about myself wanting Motherwell to win.

    I just can’t help it.

  18. Hun tactics sit right on top of the keeper at free kicks and I have no doubt there will be plenty

Ginger, correct. I see he’s not playing. They must have left him in the paddock.
