Strikers and the comfort zone

538

There’s something healthy when the arrival of a new striker, who has yet to trouble the net, has raised the game of an incumbent.  If you talk to footballers they’ll tell you they need to be challenged.  Even most greats hit a comfort zone, where they know they are cherished by manager and fans alike, so that knot in the stomach about where the next contract is coming from never materialises.

Gary Hooper missed this at Celtic.  He was the apple of Neil Lennon’s eye, and clearly top striker at Celtic, but a few seasons in his appetite for the same old challenge seemed to wane.  I’m assured by those who shared a dressing room with Henrik Larsson, this was one area which set the Swede aside.  The accolades meant nothing to him, he wanted every trophy, every record, which perhaps indicates why he captured the Champions League in his mid-30s.

I shared a room with my brother…the sensible one of us.

He actually taped the room halfway including our snooker table because I was a clatty git when young.

Darts used to get thrown at me as I wouldn’t abide to his rules.

The final straw was when he came home and I was in his bed with a lassie, I could tell you more but it’ll keep for later;)

    Ps..he’s a director with BT now ;)

There would be no Easter Rising if it wasn’t for guys like John Bulmer Hobson, a Belfast Quaker who organised the running of guns to land in Howth and Wicklow. The Asgard that landed with 900 guns from Hamburg was pivotal for the 1916 Rising. The crew of the Asgard, owned and sailed by Erskine Childers were all English including 2 women, except there

here were only two Irish ( fishermen) on board from Gola Island, Donegal.

All through Irish history it was the educated Protestants that fought for Irish Freedom.

Gerry, you should trace your family tree and see where your forebears came from.

    I visited my granda recently.

A village called Mayo Bridge near Newry.

He is 120, and was a bit down.

Nothing is a religion thing with me, my good lady is a Protestant and probably the best person I have ever met (apart face my mum) our young daughter goes to a catholic school because that is the way I want her to be taught, she will learn a million things more in the home, religion should be each to their own and never put on others, I question mine everyday but hopefully will always rely on it, for comfort if nothing else !

You are right about religion, it should be a personal thing for people to be guided by in their life if they so wish.

    Nothing else

It’s not until you get older that you appreciate that those darts were meant in friendship;)

Oh well, seen as I’m on, another wee story, all true.

I worked with a bloke when I was in my early twenties, what stories he would come out with…

His words… When in the RAF as a fitter maintaining early jet fighters.

Just before the wing commander took off, jj heard a rattle, he waved down the plane and advised the wing commander to let him check the left engine.

Right enough, after getting harnessed and dropped into the engine he found a screw that was loose, he saved that mans life!

As a reward, the wing comander took him up on a dual jet and let him fly it, true story…believe me there is a lot more;)

    WITS….

Religion helped my mum bury my dad, helped us bury my mum, people who don’t believe fair play, for people who believe let them get on with it, I know for a fact when I walk out of chapel on a Sunday I feel quite good, maybe that’s just in my heid but I choose my daughter to go at a catholic school, for one simple reason, it was the school I went too, for some nutters that think kids get taught hatred in schools they are the ones who have hatred in their minds, hatred is taught in the home, I am happy knowing their will be no hatred taught in my home

    I couldn’t agree more

Most religions help people get through their lives with comfort at times of stress etc

Most religions have the same basic tenets of love and tolerance, turn the other cheek, love thy neighbours, do unto others as you would have them do unto you etc.

It’s the crazy witch doctors who twist all that around to mean” burn the unbelievers” that are to be avoided

  23. Cathach,

Just had the weather forecast for the week: basically 1 low pressure system after another coming in from the Atlantic. Means more of the same: wind and rain, except that later in the week, the wind will be coming down from the North. So, it will get cold again. They contrasted Glasgow and some place in Surrey for rainfall so far this July. Glasgow 119 mms; the other place 2 mms. I’m sure Largs will be even higher than Glasgow.

  24. Another one from jj…

Whilst out fishing with his brother, said brother lost his rod and decided to go into the river to recoup it, unbeknown to him there was deadly reeds in his way, jj seing his brother entrapped in the reeds dived in with his favourite knife between his teeth.

After a long struggle to get his brother free and giving him the kiss of life…guess what?

He had dropped his knife, back in jj goes, amongst all the reeds to get his special knife fearing nothing. I saw the knife and I believe him;)

  25. WITS,

It’s only Christian religions that have turn the other cheek as a basic tenet which is why it was so revolutionary.

Most other religions have preach eye for eye
