Strikers and the comfort zone

538

There’s something healthy when the arrival of a new striker, who has yet to trouble the net, has raised the game of an incumbent.  If you talk to footballers they’ll tell you they need to be challenged.  Even most greats hit a comfort zone, where they know they are cherished by manager and fans alike, so that knot in the stomach about where the next contract is coming from never materialises.

Gary Hooper missed this at Celtic.  He was the apple of Neil Lennon’s eye, and clearly top striker at Celtic, but a few seasons in his appetite for the same old challenge seemed to wane.  I’m assured by those who shared a dressing room with Henrik Larsson, this was one area which set the Swede aside.  The accolades meant nothing to him, he wanted every trophy, every record, which perhaps indicates why he captured the Champions League in his mid-30s.

I remember when pope Benedict caused controversy by quoting an Islamic scholar who said Islam had been spread by the sword.Sky news had an irate Muslim academic who was so affronted by the suggestion of violence that he reminded the pope that “Islam isn’t a turn the other cheek religion” made me chuckle.

  2. I’m off ooot for a few pints of Guinness, scroll back some time to-morrow, God Bless All Heretics.

  3. Going to head off early now…” well lit” would be a good description now, so must leave before I make a complete tool of myself when the political experts arrive after a hard day digesting all the Sunday broadsheets.

Dripping with sarcasm would also be a good description of that statement.

I love my religion (as I have previously posted I question it everyday) only found out today one on my sisters best pals who I have known for the best part of 40yrs passed away yesterday which was my birthday, told my wee niece to tell her best pal (only daughter of my sisters friend) that at least her mum made sure we wouldn’t forget her anniversary as it was my birthday (she was only 2yrs older than me) won’t say the name in case friends or family are lurking or posting, puts every single thing on this wee planet into perspective, not looking for any posts but I am quite sure the punters on here will offer a wee prayer up anyway, as I say religion sometimes can help others, the ones who deride religion should just go with the flow, my wee mum used to say if you have nothing good to say why not just say nothing

I’m generally pro religion having seen a lot of the good but also bad it can do.

I’d have to ask however what perception of ‘cheek turning’ kindness children and civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan and rural Pakistan have experienced in recent years, delivered via a Hellfire missile?

What must most of the world think of ‘us’ cos like it or not it’s done in our name.?

  7. Theglasgowcelticway,

Wouldn’t surprise me if the pope knew more about islam than most Muslims

  8. One more from jj…

While serving in the RAF in the fifties jj was a black belt in karate, so he was super fit.

One day he blacked out due to what he thought was stomach cramp.

He woke up the next day to find out it was appendicitis with four doctors looking over him.

Well Mr Jameson, how are you feeling?

    I’m fine, why?

You had acute appendicitis and we had to operate on you. Do you train Mr Jameson?

    Yes why do ask?

Well, it took four doctors to hold open your stomach muscles so we could operate on you.

jj…oh god so I’ll have a big scar?

Surgeon…not at all, we didn’t need to stitch you as your muscles will contract.

The guy was good, no scar;)

Suppose religions are for the most part ok.

It’s man’s interpretation, often to further their own selfish aims. that causes the horrors.

  12. JG,

Got to agree, the hypocrisy of so called Christians throughout history is what many believe created the Islamic faith.

Much of Christianity was spread by the sword too.

Which is why I was so surprised when a Christian wad made pope

Like you after mass I feel good I look forward to going to mass and enjoy the experience.Going to confession is also enjoyable and after I feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders.I believe this life is been given to us in order that we may choose which way we want to go in our eternal life either to eternal Hell fire or to live with our saviour Jesus in Paradise we all I believe have that choice to make and it is the biggest most important choice we will ever have to make.

  16. 2 really interesting conversations over the weekend.

Last night. Best mate. Since S1. 1982! First time out since both our Mothers had passed.

He’s a copper. Good guy. Sergeant’s ticket but will only ever be a constable cos he plays by the rules and tells his bosses how it is.

Latest run in was when his report was changed – fundamentally – to try to downgrade an assault cos his area had reached its limit for assaults.

The need for FAC was never clearer.

The other was the night before. Guy I know through work. Yes voter. Ardent anti Royalist. But a Rankers fan cos of his childhood.

Fascinating. He felt their demise should have seen us come in to save them for the sake of Scottish football. And a chance to ‘refine the competition’ to take away the bad stuff. His idea of good days was when Walter – a gent – was in charge.

    My riposte. Delivered politely.

    1. When we almost died they’d have finished us off not helped us.

    2. His halcyon period of Walter equated to my period of unabashed, unpunished cheating of the highest order when state funded white collar cheats bought titles.

    3. While I support CFC for positive reasons and love what we do as a support I could never see a single positive ideal associated with his club(s)

Despite this, we parted on good terms!

Beheading: Anne Boleyn, on her way to be executed, played by the actor Claire Foy in the BBC’s Wolf Hall

ISLAM today is at the same point of violent turmoil as Christianity was during Henry VIII’s Reformation, the director of the BBC’s adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s best-selling novel of those times, Wolf Hall, says.

The Booker Prize-winning story charts the rise of Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII’s chief minister, as the King pursued an annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon.

Peter Kosminsky, the director of the BBC2 dramatisation, which started on Wednesday, was asked by the Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis if he thought that religious idealism, as displayed by Henry’s friend Sir Thomas More, was not coming from Christian leaders today, but from radical Islam.

Mr Kosminsky agreed that the concept was “very much” in his mind when he was working on the programme. He said: “It struck me that Islam is about 500 years younger than Christianity as a religion, which means that this drama, set about 500 years ago, looks at a time when Christianity was about the same age as a religion as Islam is today.

“So we look at some of the extraordinarily extreme things that radical Islam, jihadists, are doing – cutting people’s heads off, massacring Shias – over points of what might appear to outsiders [to be] fairly arcane differences of religious dogma. But look back 500 years to what Christianity was doing in that time: cutting people’s heads off and putting them on pikes . . . burning people alive . . . and often over disagreements: for example, whether the Bible should be available in the vernacular.”

Confession was a raw subject in our household, my mother never forgave me for stopping going, I told her if there is a God he knows exactly what I have done, I don’t need to go into a wee box and tell another human being, by the way every priest I have encountered has been brilliant but you will only read the horror stories in the papers

  19. Had a great day and evening at the Ayrshire Tims AGM yesterday. Not too sure what time I left but felt ok this morning. Must have still been pashed!

We made some very important decisions:-

    – Who was buying the first round

    – Who was buying the second round

    – Who was buying the third round

You get the idea. Hardly ground breaking stuff but very similar to how Warby is approaching Sevco games. He is calling the game against Burnley Game Three…….em because it is. And the Game against Hibs Game 4…….em because it is.

I wonder how long he will keep it going. Warby can you give us a heads-up on your plans for Game 69?

BGX. I have not studied the Islamic religion or any other religion for that matter but I have faith that Christianity is the true religion.I have not answered your question as to what happens if you are muslim. The reason for that is I do not know however,if a muslim asks me about my faith I would do my best to explain it and point him to the Bible as his reading material.

Why don’t you leave them huns alone…same reason I dont, next door neighbour was sitting in his garden with two monkeys when I got home from work (something he doesn’t know the meaning of) feck it, put foggy dew on.;)

  25. Lionroars67,

Had the same discussion, conclusion we reached, Islam started 700 years after Christianity and they appear to be making the same mistakes in the same time lag, difference is there is no hypocrisy involved with Islam, eye for eye, death of infidels and heretics are all acceptable punishments in the Koran.

  26. Noticed a wee bit of chat about religion etc on the site tonight.

here is my take on this.

Once I realized that the catholic church was one of the richest organisations in the world and could solve poverty WORLD wide, many, many times over.

And still be one of the richest organisations in the world.

It could have done this at any point in the last 500 years. Logistically it would have been nigh to impossible possibly until the start of the last century.

I began to see that as a religion the leaders did not practice what they preach.

    Its just a business folks…….

trading in our fears and money.

This is not an attack on the many fine people that are catholics or members of other religions in the world.

They are a credit to humanity. As are the people on this site that read this and will no doubt get hacked off by this.

As you do and reply back to have a go ask yourself on question.

Could the catholic church solve world poverty and still keep a vast amount of wealth.

  27. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Gerryfaethebrig. When we go to confession the priest is only the mediator between us and Jesus and our forgiveness comes not from the priest but Jesus.
