Strikers like Anthony

578

When Anthony Stokes picked himself off the ground having won a penalty yesterday his eagerness for a piece of the action was clear.  Having missed the majority of the season through injury he is a player with a point to prove.

The penalty correctly went to Kris Commons but Anthony still had an opportunity to remind us what a valuable player he can be.  He is not the strongest or most skilful player at the club but he is a natural goal-scorer.

Competition for a place in Celtic’s attack has seldom been more acute.  Lassad, Miku, Samaras, Stokes and Watt are all pressing for a place alongside Gary Hooper.  Each of them will have to consider the possibility of new arrivals in the summer, when securing a place in the squad, never mind the starting line-up, will be a challenge.

Anthony’s return to fitness, and form, is a timely reminder of what he brings to Celtic, and what we have missed once or twice this season.

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

Thanks for a civil response. I personally find some of the hyperbole here quite distasteful. People are using language in an absurd way when talking about a police state and nazis. Anyway I thank you and others for being able to communicate in a reasoned and civil way. Others can learn from the likes of yourself and Stringer Bell.

You make a very good point about having former players of the club – legends – taking part in discussions between the club and supporters groups – in this case the GB.

    Why not?

Again when looking at how this is being analysed at a political level the data being used is majoring on arrests NOT convictions. Arrests do not equal law breaking. Only convictions do this.

But in the world of soundbite spin it is the arrest info that is being used to create the picture. The GB provide a convenient point of engagement to any state agent ‘proving’ their case. The question is ‘are we as a support prepared to see a small section of our family cynically used to this end?’

For the avoidance of doubt, whilst I’m a nobody, I’d happily volunteer to take on a brokerage role if that’s the bit that’s missing.

Remember after the AGM we spoke to Ian Bankier and asked him directly if the club were passing on supporters details to the police , he replied by insisting that the club would only hand over information in relation to a criminal offence having been committed.

Do you think he lied to us and the club have been passing on information to the police without evidence of criminal activity ?

  8. Paul67 etal.

This reminds me of back in the 50s, 60s.If someone felt they were being dicriminated against,There would be a call for a meeting, and then a vote for strike action, just because someone had been repremanded about his workmanship, strike for a couple of days then back to work.

I wasn’t at the game yesterday but can understand why there is animosity between club & fans,it’s been boiling on for years,Them and use attitude,If supporters misbehave at games they should be punished, same goes for management,if the books don’t add up they are responsible for any shortfall, and would be sacked.Thankfully we don’t seem to have that problem at Celtic, not like other clubs.

There were problems at the Dundee game a few weeks ago and Celtic wanted the names of who were the troublemakers at the Dundee game.Could it be that they have got those names and made a decision to ban the supporters who caused the agro, the police could have been informed before the game yesterday to weed out the pepetraitors of said trouble.

I never new that the green brigade was a members only singing section for our club,is this what happens at other clubs,To me,it sounds a bit sinister to have a membership within a membership.

I know one thing, anyone that is calling for action to be taken, before there has been an answer to what happened, are wrong. That’s back to the 50s- 60s in my eyes and I would argue against any such action.

  9. Scotland shame.

I agree with you, we have been on a role and the demise of the hunchbacks has made it all the sweeter.

Second last “war” between Ultras and Legia lasted for two years.

Last “war” between Legia Ultras and the club stayed for six months . It’s just coincidence fifteen minutes back the club and the groups of Legia supporters issued the statement saying that the war is over. Best transfer window ever.

In a few months ordinary supporters will be tired of the Green Brigade support and will start thinking that maybe Green Brigade is not very right and should talk with the club. Whatever happened since last boycotte it divided people and Celtic support.

My main point is that Green Brigade should have not call Peter Lawwell the liar and tell people what they discussed in open meetings and behind the closed doors. This is unacceptable.

The trouble at the Dundee game was nothing to do with the GB.

There have been a lot of things attributed to the GB, of which they are not guilty, in this thread, many from posters who, unlike your good self, are rarely heard from or are appearing for the first time,

  13. Forgive my ignorance. In Ireland, north and south there are independent police compliant investigators that hold the PSNI/Gardai to account for wrong doing.

Is there no police ombudsman that the GB can complain to ?

It does seen rather ridiculous to have so many arrests and charges but very little if any prosecutions.

  14. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

Why would the GB make relations with PL any more difficult than they seem to be by fingering him as their no 1 enemy?

They must be sure of their ground.

    Really sure.

    IMO

  15. I forgot to say why we have had second war at Legia.

It started from banning people for changing seats. Few were taken from their houses at 6 am to the police stations for these “crimes”. Ultras accused Legia for giving names to the police, colaborating with police. Some fans were banned for singing swears against another club from Warsaw. You know the rest.

With all due respect, the Polis don’t determine if an offence has been committed, only the court decides that. The Polis gather evidence and help present a case for an alleged offence having taken place.

If Bankier’s statement is accurate then Celtic should not share any info until a conviction has been secured. Now to date there have been many arrests but zilcho convictions.

Disappointed you’ve adopted such a passive stance on the GB issue. Undoubtedly, this will develop into a major issue. It has the potential to tear our club apart. You can attempt to understate the significance of these revelations and avoid asking questions but you should be absolutely clear that there is a strength of feeling which prevails throughout the vast majority of our support.

We will not tolerate this intimidation of our very own. Anything other than explicit support of the GB by Peter L will initiate years of turmoil and division. Unlike others, we do not stand idly by, unquestioning and ignorant.

    MrZ,

you have been on here long enough, maybe you have not been paying attention to previous GB statements or just ignoring them but the GB were banned by the police when they were meeting with supporters associations. The GB have continually requested meetings with the club and been refused on many occasions, contrary to the GB putting up walls, they have actively sought to negotiate, what they have done here is identify the walls that are being put in their way, blaming the GB is just plain wrong and disingenious.

  27. Having spent last season in section 111 I can vouch for the pressure policing doled out specifically to that area, a place where you have mainly teenagers doing little more than singing and enjoying themselves while occasionally producing fabulous artworks and witty, if sometimes politically questionable banners. Constantly filmed by a police section who seem to be allocated just to them- and supported by several others hiding in the stairwell., these upholders of the law frequently use the boys names- whether they have had dealings with the police or not- something I see as intimidation and search many of the boys as they walk in. Does the GB’s actions warrant this- you decide but I know that I’m already considering whether to attend the Dundee game- or not
