Strikers like Anthony

578

When Anthony Stokes picked himself off the ground having won a penalty yesterday his eagerness for a piece of the action was clear.  Having missed the majority of the season through injury he is a player with a point to prove.

The penalty correctly went to Kris Commons but Anthony still had an opportunity to remind us what a valuable player he can be.  He is not the strongest or most skilful player at the club but he is a natural goal-scorer.

Competition for a place in Celtic’s attack has seldom been more acute.  Lassad, Miku, Samaras, Stokes and Watt are all pressing for a place alongside Gary Hooper.  Each of them will have to consider the possibility of new arrivals in the summer, when securing a place in the squad, never mind the starting line-up, will be a challenge.

Anthony’s return to fitness, and form, is a timely reminder of what he brings to Celtic, and what we have missed once or twice this season.

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

  1. Re the Songs, In case any of ye don’t know the IRA and Pira have disbanded, they no longer exist, how can historical songs that mention the IRA in past times be seen as showing support for illegal organisations. Having a bit of banter with a Dub who was slagging off my home place of Cork last week , I posted the lyrics of a ballad from the 1920/21 period re Corks part in the struggle for Irish Independence. The post was highlighted by a certain gentleman who I have previously crossed swords with and I was subsequently rebuked by Paul and had my post deleted. I accept its Paul’s blog and he is within his rights in acting as he did but I must admit I was pretty dismayed and considered quitting site altogether. For the moment I’m remaining on but am greatly reducing my contributions.

Re Lateral Movement, Will the Club condemn the entire support for doing “The Huddle”, and what after that, “Sit as you sing YNWA.

I’m a 65 yr old based in Ireland, I gave up my SB 3 years ago as I was only attending 5 or 6 games per annum, I realise I’m a very small fish both to the Club and this site. However over the years I was responsible for bringing hundreds of supporters to Glasgow on Club organised trips and responsible for converting a good few EPL lads into Celts. These young lads will hopefully continue to travel for years. At this stage any stand taken by me will be purely token and will effect nobody but myself, however I still feel I have to take it. I will not attend Celtic Park again until this issue is resolved in a satisfactory manner. I cannot stop loving and following Celtic, its part of who I am but not at Celtic Park.

    Doc..,

UEFA did not fine the club for political singing, it is not a UEFA offence, there was a trumped up lie about sectarian singing which the board refused to contest as it suited their agenda, please get you facts right before making such accusations.

  4. Magnificentseven on

a lot of new posters on here tonight!!! strange in the circumstances…a wee stench from some of them as well

  5. I want to attempt a contribution to the debate based on correcting many of the errors perpetrated by posters today. I apologise in advance to the regular match attenders who will already know the truth of what is stated below.. However, there are a few lurking journos, politicians, police spies, and trolls on here too who won’t know this :-

The GB only operate as a unified group in one section of the stadium at home games.

Some of them attend away games as individuals or on supporters buses or in small groups but there is no coherent GB group at away matches and that includes Euro ties.

There are other fans near to the GB, and elsewhere in the stadium, whose behaviour with regards to singing, flares, organising fights etc; is worthy of criticism but their behaviour is not committed by the GB nor is it condoned or encouraged by them. The opposite is true. The GB philosophy would proscribe anti-protestant chanting, homophobia, racism and aggression towards other supporters.

Therefore the persecution by the Police and the support given to the Police by our Board must relate to concerns solely about behaviour of GB members at home fixtures.

So forget all talk about flares, “F*** Uefa” banners, and Pro-IRA singing, all of which have occured away from CP. This battle is being fought under the “catch all” terms of the new Offensive Behaviour Legislation, an anti-football fan measure which cannot be applied to fans attending other sports matches. It is itself a snobbish class-ridden piece of nonsense, as can be seen by those endorsing its introduction to the spectacularly ill-informed politicians and genteel law makers in Auld Reekie (Spiers, Nevin and oor ain sadly departed Paul McBride)

The intelligent members of the Police hierarchy, and there will be many, know that this is stupid legislation but they also know there is an interface between the Police and politics. If the SNP were prepared to fund this bill and the Police Unit to implement it, then they will want the Police to supply them with a body count in terms of either convictions in the short term or a reduction in offences following football matches in the longer term.

The signs are that the poorly drafted legislation is not going to obtain the short term target so the police are now motivated to discourage the emergence of what they see as an anarchic trend, fans who will not forelock tug, and they wish to intimidate, discourage and wear down their enemy so that football is an unattractive pastime and the people they are currently prosecuting, but not obtaining convictions against, will wander off and football will become a dull sterile unattractive pastime for all in attendance.

There will not be a reduction in violence in Scotland. There will not be an improvement in quality of life for anyone. The problem will be merely moved on to somewhere else, pubs and streets away from the football, but there will be a declared PR triumph about beating the soccer yobs.

There is a degree of stupidity in the “War against Terrorist Singing” and much of it is perpetrated on here too. The police may want to declare BOTOB or The Roll of Honour as illegal as they find them offensive but they are unlikely to win any court case where there is a half decent defence lawyer, and the police classification and interpretation of these songs reveals an inherent bias in their own thinking. These songs are sung regularly in the pubs and clubs of friendly nations. They appear without restriction on You Tube, and they are licensed for sale on i tunes and in record shops. Now if they were to target The Celtic Symphony, an execrable song with execrable lyrics, I might welcome its banning but I am not a banner of things by nature and I know that my taking offence does not mean that any offence was being offered to me. In short, I should not be protected from things I don’t like.

There are some facts about this story that have yet to emerge but it is incontrovertible that there has been a breakdown of trust between the GB and PL. That is a real shame. If PL, and please note that little big word “if”, has said one thing to the GB and acted contrary to that in private, thenhe has made a big mistake. He would be far better served in continuing to state baldly, without sugaring the pill, what it is about GB behaviour that is unacceptable to our Club.

After that, any other persecution of their activities should be seen for what it is, the choice of the police trying to justify their new FOCUS taskforce and to save the SNP and the values of middle class Embra from further ridicule.

When “Green Brigade” boycotte was announced in 2012 I compared the situation with what happened between Legia Ultras and my club. I said that this was first step to make total war between the support and the club. Saddly, I see I was right. I just read the Green Brigade statement and feel that this was written by an irresponsible few guys. The most stupid thing is give details of talks with Peter Lawwell. I might be wrong but guess that few things should be kept secret. Now Peter Lawwell is the target. The question is: The Green Brigade things Peter Lawwell is to be kicked out as first step to make things right?

To make my position clear, I would like to say that Ultras like Green Brigade are solt of the stadiums and support. I can imagine games without them but don’t get fooled

This is not about what three wee boys sing in Row Z near Prestonpansbhoy, because the MSM don’t hear what they sing, and neither does anyone else except of course Prestonpansbhoy ;-)

They do, and have besmirched the GB and the Celtic support in general ad infintaum for singing pro IRA songs en masse, whilst anyone that follows Celtic knows that this is not the case, home or away.

We should not continue to allow ‘tarring with the same brush’ because it is that, which has led to the present issues, given us via the Offensive Behaviour at Football Bill devized and laid out, because the powers in this country could not would not address the sectarian issues, deep rooted in a former club.

As for offensive there are offensive to some songs, sung at every ground in Scotland, and always will be.

You just jumped on the bandwagon, with generalising, about supporters who didn’t even get into yesterday’s game, and as others have noted your presence on this site usually coincides with controversy.

  12. I enjoy the energy the GB bring to our stadium especially in the non European games when the place is full of consumers waiting to be entertained. They have added huge value to the cp experience. They are not however accountable or indeed infallible. IMO.

Interesting that many on here seem to believe, without question, a body which has no accountability or responsibility on this matter.

I guess many on here also believed the old media when they compared Murray favourably with fergus and when they mocked Brian Quinns relative parsimony.

I Suppose it suits people’s outlook on life to be victims and seek to find fault with those in positions of relative authority.

I do not know the truth of who said what and who lied to whom. I am not sure many on here do either.

I raised that earlier and likened it with the “Irish tosh” comment by the Ibrox PR man, it appears p67 and many on here now agree with him, the hypocracy is stinking.

I remarked I thought it is the start of a co-ordinated agenda led by the board, to get rid of the “Irish tosh” which p67 appeards to have bought into.

IMO the board are trying to curry favour with corporate huns, it appears their money is more important than ours.

“There were problems at the Dundee game a few weeks ago and Celtic wanted the names of who were the troublemakers at the Dundee game. Could it be that they have got those names and made a decision to ban the supporters who caused the agro, the police could have been informed before the game yesterday to weed out the perpetraitors, of said trouble.”

It is highly unlikely that the perpetrators of the fight at Dundee were to be found within 111, where the police were operating yesterday with their “little list”. We are also being told that the numbers involved with unheralded and arbitrary banning orders were far in excess of the numbers involved in the Dundee incident, which, if you remember, escaped the notice of most Celtic fans who attended the game i.e. It was a minor and not a large scale incident.

You may wish to believe the best of the Police by thinking they were merely targeting violent offenders at football matches but they were not. If they were they would arrest and caution them. Yesterday was about intimidation and harrassment and citing banners as a pretext.

The GB have made many statements over the years keeping us abreast of their tribulations throught both the police and the board, neither have responded to any of these statements as thought it was beneath them, that to me shows contempt and shows an attitude common to both.
