Strikers liniked, the good and the indifferent

557

Back in the 90s, when we struggled to achieve much, we appeared to have the Midas Touch when it came to signing strikers. The Three Amigos, Henrik and even big Mark(o) made the job look simple. It was keepers and the like we had trouble signing back then.

The litany of strikers who have trudged through Celtic Park in recent seasons provides sharp contrast to earlier times. Scott McDonald, Gary Hooper and Leigh Griffiths are the only strikers with a half decent scoring record since the departure of The Swede 12 years ago. Since then we’ve been home to many and various strays, from Dion Dublin to the Miku-Lassad twins, Kazim-Richards, Cole, Scepovic and Guidetti.

A few of these worked on paper (Scepovic and Guidetti) but the return on our money has been painful.

Getting it right in this department is important for Brendan Rodgers but I’d caution judging too much on what a player looks like on paper. I remember the comments section when McDonald (largely sceptical) and Griffiths (vehemently opposed by many) joined.

There are lessons from elsewhere too. Markus Rosenberg scored 20 goals in five seasons (none in 18 months at West Brom) before pitching up at his first club Malmo and eliminating Ronny Deila’s Celtic. Rosenberg was 32-years-old at the time but Malmo knew what they would get from him.

I’m not particularly inspired by any of the strikers we’re being publicly linked with but I’d take a player the manager knows and trusts can do the job before someone who shakes out of the scouting DVDs.

Chris Sutton Night, Irvine CSC

The Irvine Celtic Supporters’ Club are hosting a Chris Sutton evening on Friday, 24 June, at their social club in the town. Tickets are available for £10 by calling the club (evenings only) on 01294 271967.

If you are from the area, or fancy a good night out in Ayrshire with a Celtic striker who looked good on paper, looked better on the field, and delivered some of our best memories in the last 40 years, get along to see him – and bring your camera.

I’d say Danny Graham if he were to come in would be a foil for Griffiths. An option. Griff is only 24. Another season at over 30 goals and some of them in the Champions league and he could be talked about as one of our best ever. Any striker we bring in should be different from Griff and give us an option.

    ———

Agree with that. Mark Hughes doesn’t have the greatest goalscoring record, but ask any of his striking partners if they liked playing with him.

Obviously better if they CAN score a few :-)

Would prefer someone a bit younger than Graham and with a better recent record, but let’s see what happens…

  5. If it is Danny Graham then I will cry.

I posted the same when Tony Mowbray signed his most expensive player.

He had first hand knowledge of him at West Brom.

I give you Mark Antoine Fortune.

I’m hoping Brendan Rodgers is a good judge of player .

I have my doubts because of the £190m net that he spent at Liverpool.

I know it was a committee that signed the players ,but he had final say.

    Park has to go .

If it is Danny Graham ,then this shows how poor our scouting is. , and how limited our new managers options are.

  9. Leigh was prolific last season – usually (KoK apart) top scorers have a leaner time in their following season. He was also very lucky in respect of injuries.

With that in mind it would be good to get a proven goalscorer to share the burden.

However I think the mobility, work-rate and presence of someone like Graham would also add something, similar to the Mark Hughes analogy offered by GLASSTWOTHIRDSFULL@2:08.

We suffered a lot last term, as we do every year, playing through packed defences, therefore would be good to have someone to hit and stick like Steven Fletcher.

Brendan will know ‘to the penny’ what he has at his disposal – I am sure he will make good use of it HH.

I would be looking for our 2nd striker,or a foil for LG to score at least 20 goals a season. Graham ‘s previous doesn’t look like he’s capable of that.

  14. Celitc remain the frontrunners for Wales hero Hal Robson-Kanu.

The 27-year-old, who came off the bench to score Wales’s winner against Slovakia on Saturday, is a free agent after leaving Reading.

However, Brendan Rodgers will also face competition from Bundesliga sides who have made early sounding to Robson-Kanu’s representatives.

  15. CELTIC midfielder Scott Allan hopes his story of playing football at the highest level can inspire young people with diabetes to get involved in sport.

The 24-year-old, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of three, recently spent time with a group of children with the same condition at Toryglen Regional Football Centre in Glasgow.

They took part in a football coaching session and played games with the Hoops player at Toryglen Regional Football Centre in Glasgow before visiting the Scottish Football Museum at Hampden.

And Allan told the official website that he was delighted to participate in the event on behalf of Diabetes UK and show that having the condition isn’t a barrier to taking up sport.

He said: “I was there to support Diabetes UK and help out as much as I can. A big thing for a kid is to have a role model who has the same condition as you as it gives you a bit of inspiration. That’s what I looked for when I was younger and there weren’t many players in my era who were diabetic growing up, it was more people like the rower Steve Redgrave

“I was diagnosed at age three. In the early years it was hard getting to grips with it but my Mum looked after me when I was younger and then when I was about six or seven, I started doing my injections myself.

“But from day one, I never thought I wouldn’t be a footballer. I always wanted to be one and I was never going to let this stand in my way. For me, anything is possible no matter what condition you have and that was the way I looked at it.”

    picture

Close to home at Celtic, Allan has someone he can turn to for inspiration in the form of Celtic legend Danny McGrain, who was also diagnosed with Diabetes early in his career but conquered the condition to become a great for club and country.

“I have spoken to Danny many times about it,” said Allan. “I get on really well with him and it’s good to look up to someone like that who has come through and been very successful at Celtic.”

Over four million people are living with diabetes across the UK including over 276,000 in Scotland. There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes affects around 10 per cent of those diagnosed while Type 2 diabetes accounts for almost 90 per cent of cases.

Type 1 diabetes is most commonly diagnosed in children and adolescents although it can develop at any age.

It’s a condition where the body cannot produce insulin and is treated by taking daily insulin doses either by injection or via an insulin pump. No-one knows exactly what causes Type 1 diabetes but it’s not caused by eating too many sweets or being overweight and it isn’t currently preventable.

Despite its prevalence, diabetes is still a very misunderstood condition with a number of common myths and misconceptions.

This Diabetes Week (June 12-18), Diabetes UK is ‘setting the record straight’ to raise awareness of the condition and let people know the truth about what it’s like to live with it every day.

As part of the campaign Scott Allan and children from across Scotland with Type 1 diabetes will feature in a short online film which Diabetes UK hopes will go some way to dispelling the myth that people with diabetes can’t play sport.

After giving the order to go, Eisenhower, fearing the worst spent the next few hours agonising over things. He wrote a Statement, put it in his inside pocket and intended to release it if the news from Europe was bad.

I believe the Statement was in English.

The statement was never issued. Actions spoke louder than words.

That’s a fair point. But you can’t directly translate scoring records in England to Scotland. Sutton, Hartson, Commons for example.

If this was August 31st and we hadn’t signed a striker and it was looking like Graham was going to be our only striker coming in I’d be pretty hacked off! It’s still early days.

Are you suggesting the feedback from Europe (aka UEFA) has been positive towards the report and the contents contained, if so are they going to request the SFA answer questions that they now wish answered and because this feedback has been positive are you alluding to Celtic keeping the powder dry on their statement for the time being?

  25. The Johnatron on

I would be surprised if anyone comes in any time soon. Brendan said he would assess the current squad (which is no mean feat considering the size of it!) as well as the Academy. If someone arrives over the next few days I would suspect Brendan would have had little input, and PL would have his fingers all over it. Danny Graham? No thanks. Hopefully Owen does us a favour with that one.

  26. I’m not worried about having not signed anyone yet. Think best to wait until the windy is open or them Sevco’s will raise another petition to have us banned from Europe and them being awarded their rightful place based on their exemplary 4 year history of only fighting once in a major tournament.
