Striking partners, sloppy thinking, define overinvestment

613

It’s difficult to say for sure if Stjarnan are the worst team I’ve seen Celtic play but they are there or there about.  They defended resolutely, have a good goalkeeper and scored a fine goal, but they are no Arbroath.

Ronny will be annoyed at the loss of the early goal.  I always think of San Marino’s opening goal against England on these occasions.  This was back in the 90s, when San Marino weren’t the team they are now (cough).  England took kick off but found themselves a goal down after 7 seconds.  They lost a sloppy goal because they were far too complacent, as did Celtic last night.

One thing which will be clear to all is the focus on goal Leigh Griffiths brought when he came on.  It will be tempting to contrast this to Nadir Ciftci, who looked (and was) less potent, but Leigh’s first sight of goal came as a result of Nadir’s work.  I suspect both benefit from being able to play off a partner.

The passing looked better last night and it was good to see the lungs remained productive until late in the game.  We now have a big week of preparation ahead of the next round.

Delighted to see the Celtic Foundation on the shirts last night, well done to all concerned.  The Foundation should feature more prominently in everything we do (fans and club).  And if you’ve got a pair of trainers, sign up for the Great Scottish Run.

Just caught news of Newco’s £175k bid for Scott Allan.  Define overinvestment, to use local parlance.

  1. How about the Celtic suits work on forming official relations and sponsorship with this Celtic Castilla?

Great PR in Spain and a chance to run an eye over some young local footballing talent.

    Win/win.

I think defensively we have a problem of ball watching.

Any diagonal ball to the backside causes us problems

Also VVD over committed on his man in lead up to the goal which is a cardinal sin for central defenders.

We get away with such errors in SPL but Europe is less forgiving,

The good save Craig Gordon made from the volley outside the box was also the result of naive defending when Efe shepherded guy inside to a more dangerous area.

These are all fixable but defensive coaching needs improvement.

We also need to work on keeping up our tempo in last third were everything seems to stall.

Better off the ball movement would help.

Would like to see Armstrong given more freedom as he is our most creative.

Just back home to find a nice Bielefeld registered Aston Martin Vantage parked across from the house. This is one of many upmarket cars that park there. All with the same purpose – visiting the local Pro around the corner.

  4. Yesterday was merely a training game, in the middle of pre-season. Nothing more, nothing less.

After some bluster from their coach earlier in the week, they were dispatched with aplomb.

Certain defenders are unlikely to ship a similar goal again after being subject to a word in the ear from Ronny.

Our team is taking shape, with others nipping at the heels of the first picks.

The often much maligned Charlie Mulgrew, goal of the tie aside, had a great game yesterday. He is Celtic through and through.

However they barely got a sniff for the rest of the game, so was the problem the set-up as dictated by the manager or a lapse of concentration from the players?

I’ll go with the latter. Hopefully that kind of mistake will disappear as they players learn each other’s style.

It’s muddy because I think DKs money was invested in Murray Sports rather than directly in Rangers FC.

That’s my recollection too. Think it was some kind of rights issue back around 2000.

King now claiming he didn’t know Murray was using the bank’s money, but bank debt was near £50m when he invested. All a bit – ahem – “strange”…..

On the need for supporters of TRFC to out spend Celtic supporters:

Fergus McCann changed the balance of fan spending when he rebuilt Celtic Park.

Even then gate money was the core income stream and as soon as CP started filling up to its new capacity Celtic could out wage Rangers.

That’s when SDM indulged in over borrowing and ebts to redress that balance.

How much more will TRFC supporters need to spend to overtake?

Is that amount achievable? Depends how much they hate being second to Celtic and more important how deep are the pockets of those who do.

    I doubt it’s honestly possible.

    ———

Does that mean you think it’s dishonestly possible? :-)

You also have to spend “right”. Look at how Tottenham spent the Bale money or how Inter spent gazillions buying mega-stars in the 90s and early 2000s without winning anything.

Hamilton Tim et al: Met with the local MSP. We started off by discussing the Hamilton game and the 2 boys in jail over the weekend and how what was previously a BOTP ended up being overblown.

He agreed that the legislation needs to be revisited and that a report was published 2 weeks ago which he will bring me a copy of. I asked him about FAC not being allowed to present their study, he will contact Paul Wheelhouse by email and will forward his reply to me.

I got the impression that they know this is poor legislation but want to somehow save face before scrapping it. Fair enough as long as it’s scrapped I don’t really care…

I kept my questions at a local level and highlighted to him the Morton v St Mirren derby coming up in August and that if the police were to enforce the bill at that game there would hardly be a soul left in the ground.

Some other discussion around policing and such. He’s coming back on Monday with answers to other questions I put to him, so we;ll see what that brings…I’ll let you know how that goes…

  15. Their goal

Individual misjudgements aggravated the pressing style that we began the game with.

Lustig was too close to the guy in possession and so had no chance to jockey him. His only other option then was to foul the guy.

Both VVD and Dedryck were too central and neither one was close enough to Lustig to get to the ball once their guy knocked it past Mikael. VVD was closest and was turned easily, which left Charlie steaming in from the other wing to try and block the shot that we all knew was coming. Some punters on the Wall at Celtic TV slagged Charlie off – which was unbelievable in the circumstances.

Someone said last night that the pitch was an early generation astro and today Ronny has mentioned that it was not watered and so was sticky. It was clear early on that our players couldn’t change direction as quickly as we would on grass, so I’m just very glad that we have no injuries and have some time to prepare for next Wednesday.

Regarding losing goals in Europe, the defence need to realise that they can’t go gallivanting up the pitch, almost en masse, a la SPFL as they will be punished severely. Keeping it tight at the back is imperative in European games. Being difficult to score against is quite often more effective than playing “good football”. Sure like all Celtic fans I want to be entertained but progression in Europe needs a different mindset. We have pace in the team that can punish teams on the break. I’m not advocating parking the bus just merely having it sitting at the bus stop until all the passengers get on.

Is that were we need “the third eye”

  24. I’m honestly puzzled by the analysis of the goal and the concept that we were on a cavalry charge or gallivanting up the pitch.

I thought we played an intelligent game last night, we dominated possession and they were confined to about 3 chances over the 90 minutes. The big lads at the back were uncomfortable trying to turn on the poor surface, that in my opinion was the main cause of their goal.

We dominated these lads home and away and yes I understand they are part-timers and not having a great season anyway, so I am not overdoing the kudos but you can only play what’s in front of you. We did that and we move on, next games will present a bigger more potent challenge for our coach and team and this time next week we will all be wiser as to our strengths and failings.

one thing that struck me after watching yesterday’s game …we missed Denayer …. I have high hopes for Boyata … he looks like a good, but different, type of player than Denayer ….

Denayer had a calmness and confidence that (i) for one so young was remarkable, and (ii) seemed to calm the rest of our defence (even the more senior players).

I knew last year that Denayer was special, but sometimes it takes their absence to realize how special….

think Denayer will go on to be a GREAT player ….

not criticizing Boyata (for whom I have high hopes, but haven’t seen enough of him to really know) ….

just saying it was a pleasure to watch Denayer in the hoops for a year.

Well said,I think barring some chances missed we put in a very professional performance over the two legs! The most important thing on Wednesday is a clean sheet! Looking at their recent results they don’t seem to score many but seem to have the knack of winning on away goals. 2-0 would be a great result though I’d rather take five off them, sick of watching champions league games through my fingers.

  34. mike in toronto on

RWE …. I’m not criticzing Dedryck … he checks all the boxes for a good modern CB … seems to be a more athletic player than Denayer … but Denayer was smooooth …. not in a flashy way like VVD … but calm, understated way …

and TinyTim …. will disagree on Ciftci … in RD’s system, I think he is exactly the sort of player we need up front, and his touch and ability to draw fouls was quite good … (even if he sometimes made the most of the fouls) ….. He is trying a bit to hard to score, I agree, but think that will change once he breaks the ice ….

I think the problem is less with him (who I thought did a decent job as the front man), but the other guys (SA, SJ and GMS) weren’t timing/making the runs to play off big ciftci ….

towards the end of the game, when stj tired, we were better at finding space, but we need to find the confidence/skill to do it from the start …..

For me, that is the biggest thing we need to improve before the next round .
