Strong message from Supporters Association

926

Running late today…….

The Celtic Supporters Association are in their seventh decade so have seen it all before, albeit the matters the felt necessary to comment on today are uncommon in modern times.  After their AGM yesterday they issued the following statement:

“We do not condone in any circumstances the letting off of smoke devices of any kind, the dangers to the health of our supporters should at all times be paramount in everybody’s thoughts. We have quite a number of members who are of the senior variety, and the dangers to anyone with respiratory problems are greatly increased by coming into contact with smoke.

We also do not condone the use of pyrotechnics of any kind; again the dangers to our own supporter’s health should be paramount at all times.

Finally, the deliberate damaging of property within any stadium is not acceptable, and leaves a stain on the great reputation of the Celtic Support. The seats that were broken at Fir Park was blatant vandalism; nothing else.”

I share Association president Joe O’Rourke’s hope that this is a watershed moment for the support, but most of us know at least one person who thrives on chaos and notoriety.   We need as many strong voices to step forward as possible, someone with experience of putting genies back in bottles would be handy too.

Many thanks to those who participated in our Cinc Senti’s auction, which closed yesterday, raising £102 for charity.  More on where the money will be going later in the week……..

“Yes those were the days, when you didn’t reach for your laptop, phone or tablet or whatever to see what you had missed in terms of things Celtic. Those days when, unless you were from east Kilbride, you had no idea what the eather was like there— and to be honest, you had absolutely no interest in finding out!….. Back to the days when you had never heard of Kojo and his way of speaking or writing, when no one had ever Brattbakkedinanager, would recognise a cash strapped scrofulous hillbilly outside Beverley Hills, and the only Battered Bunnet you knew of belonged to your Grandad.”

Uly- yet again the serious ganja will be found not a million miles from ole Old Tim and his homey Snoop Dogg

  2. Sorry that the club has had to take this action.

I assume that “suspensions” give some leeway for those who have been caught up in this through no fault of their own to make a case for the suspension to be lifted.

With regard to the Green Brigade and hangers on, much as I love their passion and humour, I said at the time of the broken seats issue at Celtic Park that if those breaking seats are not members of the Green Brigade then they should be pointed out to Stewards etc to protect the reputation of the Green Brigade never mind Celtic. Accusations of “squealling or touting” would be childish nonsense. This is the real world not the school playground.

The club is damned no matter what actions they take. Someone broke seats, if it was accidental then those responsible have just to contact Celtic or Motherwell and offer compensation for the damage and then purue a civil claim for any damages they suffered caused by the shoddy construction of the seat, which should not fail under normal conditions.

I hope all those wrongly caught up in this can have the matter resolved quickly.

This isint the end it’s just the start, the plc won’t be happy until we’re all sitting down saying nothing and clapping goals no jumping about and paying for the privilege, they’ll be taking the tri colours off the kids going in and no moaning when we sell our good players and replace them with dross but don’t worry we have plenty of money in the bank. Sad day for football fans of our club

  4. I find the whole situation sad.

I was never in favour of a singing section, GB or anyone, in the first place. A silly solution to a temporary problem.

The outcome was predicted. A group of fans given a special status for an activity superficially harmless but as is the nature of things open to interpretation.

The GB or whoever influenced the activities simply went too far. The idea of a singing section seems so innocent now but it turned out much more than singing was involved.

Although sad at how the outcome had affected the fans (some of them certainly innocent) and the club I can’t but say the demise of the GB/singing section brings me no grief at all.

Quite possible I’m in a tiny minority but its how I see things.

  5. What’s the odds the GB will be back at the beginning of next season when they can generate some income for the Club by doing TIFOs for the qualifiers?

  6. Victory for hurting huns and a bonus for Jack Irvine.

A couple of weeks ago Aberdeen fans broke seats and wrecked a toilet at our place. Where was the msm outcry then.

Complete over-reaction to a fairly minor outbreak of vandalisim.

  7. Simon Cowell to oversee rehearsals for The Celtic Choir-provisionally(sic) named The X GB Factor.

Spot on. The vast majority in the Green Brigade had nothing to do with Friday. They know their every move is watched and them and the wider support have been filmed extensively for years. On top of this how many in 111 knew of the planned display before the AC Milan match? The answer is a tiny minority of them.

Yet, idiots like Tony Donnelly and others on this site who are quick to condemn the entire section clearly don’t go to many games or know anyone who sits in section 111.

The hangers on were the problem and the club have taken the easy way out. Granted, something had to be done but there are going to be an awful lot of bored youngsters whose focus was as much on the colour and singing of the GB as much as the game.

Lets not forget, the passion and atmosphere of the crowd is a large factor in what makes you fall in love with the club as a youngster. For some fans this is clearly not the case and they would prefer a bland, boring afternoon sitting in silence, occasionally offering some polite applause.

I know who the real fans are. I know the fans who have followed us home and away for years. And it is not people like Tony Donnelly.

  10. Afternoon all,

It is fascinating reading justifications for vandalism, and wreckless behaviour. I mean some are talking as if these kids, drunk and doing what they do on a Friday night, might have been representing a higher cause.

In a society that offers so many routes to self-expression (why this very blog is an enormous testament to the power of the written word and collective endeavour), it’s bizarre ( I mean logically bizarre) that anyone would want to behave this way in a venue for very expensive entertainment. What would cineworld do about protestors? Would it be ok for me to tear up seats and set off flairs at the cinema, because I was drunk and wanted to make a point about the ugly morality of a blockbuster film or it’s star?

The idealogical debate was over many years ago, football stadiums are entertainment venues, and the fact that Celtic Park has 50-60k in attendance most weeks reflects this change. In the glory days, oft referred to, our average gate was 20-30k.

Ok, whatever. The debate goes on, and some think it divides. In truth, and as Paul says, 99.9% of fans aren’t divided.

Meanwhile, does this last month of irksome behaviour end any hopes of a standing area at CP? Could have brought our capacity above 70k, so bit of a shame…

  14. I personally think the need for a standing only area had become more obvious. Lets follow the bundesliga…cram them in every week. Great atmosphere.

  15. Ernie Lynch – There are no meaningless Champions League games in the group stages. On top of the benefits Eurochamps67 pointed out, there is also a 1million Euro win bonus per game, and co-efficient points up for grabs.

Celtic are 12/1 to win this game. These are good odds if you like a flutter. I am looking forward to seeing the Bhoys play with more freedom in this game and giving Barcelona a run for their money.

Smash up seats and use flares and smoke bombs at football games and you’re out, it’s that simple. These idiots ignored warning after warning but thought they were above the rules. Good riddance.

  17. RE: the Barca game debate; there is indeed something in it for us. Every CL point results in a bonus payment (around €500,000- per point). A draw wouldn’t be shabby!

Bontybhoy- I dont see anyone glorifying or even justifying vandalism- I do see some peole asking for perspective and pointing out the overreaction by both the MSM and the Board

  19. Instead of banning the GB I would extend their area to the whole of the lisbon lion stand. Anyone over 40 would have to prove they could sing and dance and chant or be exiled to upper JS .

Really the over 50’s should be calling it a day and stay at home eating sweeties on the couch.

  20. Stairheedrammy on

Ipaddy- they banned all of the GB who were at the Motherwell – very few, if any were involved in the behaviour you mention. Do you think that merited?- and what should we do about the people who actually carried out the vandalism?
