Structural change pack ice moving again

283

Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack gave us a glimpse into the finances of practically every club in Europe by explaining the financial predicament his club finds itself in.  They expected £1m in match day income between now and the end of the season, as well as £5m season ticket money by June, summer merchandising income and hospitality income.  Instead, they have practically zero income stretching out for an indeterminate number of months – quite possibly until August or September.

Monthly outgoings at Aberdeen are £1.2m, this month’s costs will consume nearly all the £1.5m they had in the bank at the start of the month.  How they, and others, meet payroll April, May and June, is a challenge for the industry.  Few clubs are as well run as Aberdeen, most will be in more serious peril.

This is not just a Scottish phenomenon; it will play out across Europe.  The Championship in England is particularly vulnerable. Around the time of the collapse of ITV Digital, Brian Quinn spoke of the pack ice of European football-broadcasting homogeny showing signs of a break up.  That financial crisis in English football passed when the Premier League stepped in to salve any sores.

It remains to be seen what, if any, issues afflict the Premier League.  Ticket and merchandising sales are almost irrelevant to the business model in England’s’ top tier. There, it is all about the domestic and international TV deals.  It cannot be emphasised enough, Premier League TV deals are absolutely critical to the entire pyramid of English football.  If the contracted number of games broadcast for this season or next cannot be fulfilled, the drop in income would have serious consequences.

You and I have been debating structural change in football for too long to get excited about any of this.  There is a better chance of things changing now than at any point in the last 18 years, but whatever change takes place will not necessarily involve Celtic. Still, we can ponder….

Maybe more realistic to assume that the league will not restart until a safe and effective vaccine is widely available.

There seems to be a growing assumption that early access to a test for the virus could lead the way for 22 men and officials to play in an empty stadium if passed fit to do so, screened out to the isolated at home. I’m sure this is probably simplistic but could be an interim step for this particular problem – finishing the 2019/20 season.

    What do you think ?

I hope whoever sent the email from Celtic gets their balls kicked, telling us the stadium and the shops are closed, but you can still buy online……ffs we should be much better than that just now

100% correct! You know my opinion about it from last night. Shooting yourself in the foot doesn’t come into it.

Reminds me of a recent Europa League match.

then closed door matches will be with us behind a pay wall,

Kris Boyd ranted, ” Fans won’t happy to watch games behind closed doors and fn pay wall as well”

  7. Due to aself imposed isolation and now the lock-down, I have for the first time been able to read the whole CQN blog, warts and all!

Despite having a decent command of the language, however, and being able to understand some Geordie, Scouse, Doric etc, I have found that two particular posters’ lingo completely baffles me!

Petec and Neustadt-Braw, when they are on, more or less take over the blog but 90% of the time, I haven’t a blessed scooby what they are on about!

Everyone has the right to post their opinions but, is it too much to ask for them to please read their posts before submitting them to ensure that they make sense.

But then again perhaps to them they do!

    Hail! Hail!

  8. Never underestimate the value of a morale booster if we are isolated for a long period.

This was one of the reasons football behind closed doors was recently mooted.

Is it true , if so its frightening to think that there is no profession sport being played anywhere in the world presently.

It’s a double edged sword though.

People see football being played they’ll assume everything’s OK and it’s all a fuss over nothing.

Bit like most were saying a couple of weeks ago.

  10. Maybe Now we should panic :-

” BUCKFAST Tonic Wine has ceased production with immediate effect during the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision, which bosses say was “not taken lightly” is to adhere to the latest Governement advice issued by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in his address to the nation last night.

He said all non-essential businesses should close.

Buckfast, which was originally made by monks at Buckfast Abbey in Devon, is popular among some within the West of Scotland. “

At what level do you think that decision was made? I can guarantee it wasn’t someone in the retail and commercial department who decided to charge on with an email.

  13. In sure the government have thought of this and black cab drivers have suggested it but just in case …

Seeing as they are going to pay self employed people …

Could they coordinate between them to arrange to pick up nhs workers round London and get them to and from work ? Black cabs ,glass partition ,it would mean cleaning cabs after every trip ,but would it work ?

    Just a thought

  19. Thanks SOT. At least a glimmer of hope. I look forward to your updates, mentally I feel when Italy starts to come right then we all start to come right. I know the UK and Ireland to a lesser extent are a few weeks behind Italy, but if Italy can get back to something like normality there is renewed hope for all of us.

Heard a Dr. on TV saying in this time of Coronavirus staying at home we should focus on inner peace. To achieve this we should always finish things we start and we all could use more calm in our lives. I looked through my house to find things i’d started and hadn’t finished, so I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of Chardonnay, a bodle of Baileys, a butle of wum, tha mainder of Valiumun srciptuns, an a box a chocletz.
