Stuck in a league without competition also has benefits

519

When the Champions League draw was made, I feared we would face Anderlecht at home on the final game after five defeats.  This would not necessarily have been the end of our interest in European football, but it would have damaged the momentum in the club in recent months.

You will remember, ahead of match day five, we discussed that the Anderlecht-Bayern Munich game was probably more important to our season than the PSG-Celtic game.  As it transpired, Bayern’s second half winner made all the difference to the second half of our season.

News last night that Celtic are the only group stage qualifier from the Champions Pot to still be in European competition offer some comfort; outcomes could have been a lot worse.

While European football is the custard in our doughnut, all I hear from is Celtic fans who are grateful it is over for a couple of months.  We have an unbeaten record to further and two games a week until the January break.

It can be pretty horrible, a huge club stuck in a minor league without competition, but it offers us respite, an opportunity to recharge, experiment and return afresh.

What does ‘pretty sure that’s what I heard even mean’?

Apologies Jinky Red Star, the radio was in the kitchen and I was in the living room.

  3. Huns, Puns & Drollery.

They offered him & Doc more money than he was on.

Milne had to cough up to keep them.

McInnes knew that he daren’t lift the bonnet & look inside.

Somehow, he was able to complete his due diligence though.

Think he just read their “accounts” & looked at the fate of managers there since they began in 2012.

Gardening leave, litigation & acrimonious partings.

Dons should be well up for the game against Dundee tomorrow now.

  4. BREAKING NEWS- A defibrilator and an ambulance despatched to BBC Shortbread HQ for Kenny McIntyre and Dick Wilson

  5. Mcinnes staying , what did Aberdeen do to deserve that . With regards the hibs game , we need broony in our timid midfield . Wee McGinn had a field day at CP when broony was missing from our team . I would also be wary of fielding died in the wool hibby Griffiths at Easter rd , we will need a full team playing for the hoops , I know , tin hat on .

Yep. It’s like Christmas every day, innit?

Except,my Timmy paranoia is buzzing through the tinfoil.

McInnes has made his position at Aberdeen pretty much untenable. I honestly can’t see him lasting past February. And that’s if he’s lucky.

Meantime,Sevco carry on with The Caretaker.

McInnes walks with a payday, and straight into a job.

  7. Good evening Bhots from a bitterly cold central Éire. Looks like snow and severe ice/frost is to hit the Emerald Isle over the next 48 hours or so.

I think Brendan needs to freshen things up a bit against the Hibees at the weekend. Mika, Stuart, Sinky and Moussa (injured?) could all do with a rest. It looks like Gamboa, Erik and Benyu have all completely gone out of favour. I’d also live to see Jonny Hayes get a decent run in the side, he looked very lively last weekend.

  8. If Dek does not want the job, who the feck does. Step forward Murty, best of luck you’ll need it. He he they just keep giving.

I laugh my socks off at the ex Oldco players they quote.

Ray Wilkins tried to insinuate himself into the manager bun fight by solemnly stating

“I would love to be able to help a wonderful football club get back on its feet. And there are so many other ex-Rangers players who’d love to.”

It’s like they’ve been asleep for 25 years.

“Ray – if I may you that – your wages, bonuses & those of the rest of the undevoted mercenaries, especially the EBT gang, are precisely why that club was liquidated. Your simpering is further testament to the supremacy mentaility that pervades even the new club. They haven’t learned & neither have you.”

  10. Aberdeen refuse huns permission to talk to mc Innes.

McInnrs knocks back guns 3 days later …so huns DID obviously speak to him despite being g refused permission by his employers ?

Has McInnes knocked back a job he wasn’t offered officially….or have the huns ILLEGALLY tapped him up ?

If so…what will the SFA do about the hu ns ?

    Just off deadclub media:))))

They would go tonto if he got offered the job again,

  12. Is it worth someone putting in a freedom of information request to bbc shortbread – how much do you spend on ex oldco and ex sevco players as pundits / co-commentators

  13. BFDJ criticising the Sevco board shocker….

“I’m absolutely stunned – I thought it was a gimme as soon as Rangers were pursuing Derek McInnes. When Derek wasn’t at Aberdeen training I thought there was only going to be one outcome.

“I was stunned by the news. I think it’s a bit embarrassing – a club the size and stature of Rangers: to be six weeks without a manager, it’s not good enough.

““The directors don’t seem to have a Plan B. They just look clueless at the moment.”

  14. Starry . I know . Was very disappointed in the griff saying he wouldn,t celebrate if he scored against hibs . Never ever heard that from any celtic player in all my time following the hoops .

  15. I’m guessing that the main thrust of MSM blame will be laid at our door, in that, McIness’ family will have said that they didn’t want to move to the “toxic” environment present in Western Scotland and feared being targeted by “rival fans”.

  16. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Statement to follow – nobody has been offered the job, looking at a number of high-quality candidates, back where we belong, blah blah…..

  17. itscalledthemalvinas on

    Right cmon .

Surely it must be time for Dave King to get serious and appoint a real raingurs man(bigot)

Barry Ferguson you are that man.

    Hopefully !

  18. FF extracts below…hahaha

    __________________________

What makes you think he was our main target? What makes you think we haven’t spoken to other candidates? What makes you think we waited 6 weeks just to speak to McInnes?

    _______________________________________________

How do you know we didn’t know what mcinnes wanted. Looks to me like he’s bottled it.

    ______________________________________________

No business football or otherwise can force someone to come and work for them if he doesn’t want to

    —————————————————————–

That’s my feeling he has bottled it as he did with Sunderland obviously feels secure at a smaller club.

    __________________________________________

There was no clear cut strong choice…Mc Innes will be well aware of that fact…and that Rangers were not exactly knocking the door down to get him.

The Rangers job is a mighty tough call… far harder ,much bigger, more pressurised ,more demanding and extremely stressful than any demands that will ever be made of him at Aberdeen…he can eke out his days there comfortably

    _____________________________________________

You could see this coming a mile off, Rangers should never deal with a scottish team again.

  19. McInnes assistant manager will be delighted he wont be moving to a club where it was made clear he was not wanted.

  20. Shaktar Donertsk manager Paulo Fonseca wore a Zorro mask and hat to his press conference last night. I think this could catch on.

  21. Clyde is excellent tonight

Feyenoord £70m Turnover and champions league football, but he will drop everything to join Sevco…delusional isn’t the word for it

  22. An absolute disaster for Sevco re McInnes ( imho )- he was the one guy I felt would improve them.

When Celtic bought Johnny Hayes the money was in Aberdeen’s bank account the morning he signed- compare that to the way they have acted over all this.

The reason I think they never try to sign guys like Walker, Moult, Souttar etc is that it would confirm to their Scottish rivals that they don’t have two-bob.

I think we have to be fair to McInnes here and say well done regardless of his reasons.

It really would be side-splitting if they wouldn’t let Anthony Joseph Docherty be the assistant and that’s why DMc said no…….

    Side-splitting but plausible.

I said two weeks ago it would be Neill n Bazza but what if they find out McCann’s cousins like the Rebs?

  23. okay bhoys further to my post at 6.18. the guy in question is a mr sonny henderson. his taxi office is next to my shop. his old man no problem with wears his 1960s rangers scarf. but for some reason sonny junior only wears his 32 red jersey when sevco win if they get beat he put his liverpool top on and apart from his king billy tattoos you couldnt meet a nicer bloke.
