Stuck in a league without competition also has benefits

519

When the Champions League draw was made, I feared we would face Anderlecht at home on the final game after five defeats.  This would not necessarily have been the end of our interest in European football, but it would have damaged the momentum in the club in recent months.

You will remember, ahead of match day five, we discussed that the Anderlecht-Bayern Munich game was probably more important to our season than the PSG-Celtic game.  As it transpired, Bayern’s second half winner made all the difference to the second half of our season.

News last night that Celtic are the only group stage qualifier from the Champions Pot to still be in European competition offer some comfort; outcomes could have been a lot worse.

While European football is the custard in our doughnut, all I hear from is Celtic fans who are grateful it is over for a couple of months.  We have an unbeaten record to further and two games a week until the January break.

It can be pretty horrible, a huge club stuck in a minor league without competition, but it offers us respite, an opportunity to recharge, experiment and return afresh.

Thanks too, mate. Oil on troubled waters is a good system, and usually my intention. Sometimes I throw it on the flames instead.

Hence, wish I could remember to think first more often.

True story re homelessness. Swindon is a town wi about 180,000 people, but a very small town centre. The town centre is rammed with homeless people.

I occasionally lose the rag with some people over this;how they are treated, abused, ridiculed. And worse, when I’m told that they’re all playing at it,dossing around in a duvet to get sympathy and maybe a few bob.

Aye,I’m not stupid-I know there are one or two like that. But so do the police. They’re soon moved on,quite forcefully reminded of things.

But I work nights, delivering around town. And I’ve seen these people huddled in doorways at 3 or 4 in the morning. They’re not making up their situation,it’s real.

About two years ago,I spoke to a local police officer about it. Howling gale, pouring rain. I asked him if his officers would object to the nearby car park being used as a make-shift shelter.

He said that if they were gone each morning by 6am,he would only check for serious law-breaking. So would his colleagues, unofficially.

It took the council about six weeks to put a stop to it.

Funnily enough Turners closed 50 years ago – in 1967! My father was the Shop Steward and brought the factory out on strike due to the conditions – he was ahead of his time in realising how much damage asbestos was doing. As a man of principle even with 12 children he stuck it out. Eventually the owners (South Africans if I recall) made everyone redundant.

My mum suggested he might want to take a trip to Lisbon with some of the redundancy money; however after the hardship we had gone through he couldn’t justify it to himself and declined.

He was that kind of man!

  14. Here’s the full Sevco statement. A wee dig at DM in there, surprise, surprise. Such dignity:

THERE has been a great deal of media speculation regarding the appointment of a new manager. We assure all supporters that they will be the first to know when we are certain we have someone with the correct qualities required by our club.

The Chairman made it clear at the AGM that the club did not consider there to be an outstanding candidate among those who had applied for the position and the club was therefore considering managers currently under contract. This requires permission from their present clubs.

The position of Rangers manager requires an ability to win football matches and the mentality to cope with the demanding off-pitch environment that goes with being the Rangers manager. This is a critical aspect of our assessment of any candidate during the interview process.

After the two games against Aberdeen, we requested permission to engage with their manager to assess his readiness and willingness to consider the Rangers position. This was declined. We were subsequently made aware by Aberdeen’s statement that, at this stage in his career, it would be best for him to remain in his current post. We endorse that position because moving to a massive club like Rangers is a big step with concomitant risk. We continue to consider candidates but will only appoint someone in whom we have full confidence and who feels he is ready for the job.

In the meantime, we have great confidence in Graeme Murty, who will continue as interim manager at least until the end of the year. The manner in which he has approached this task is a credit to himself and the club.

    Franny,

Turners eventually killed My Grandfather, My Grandmother and my Father.

They closed the factory and others elsewhere, and then attempted to Bankrupt the company so that no one could successfuly claim compensation from them.

The Government already knew that the effects of Asbestos was death by poisoning and they forced Turners to set up a compensation fund for all of thise who were affected by Asbestos and who would be affected by it in the future.

The fund is a bit of a joke as the number of claimants was hugely underestimated and as a result you get only something like 29 Pence in the pound in respect of the compensation that should have been available.

For many many years, some of the people of Clydebank were terrified of the sound of a plane overhead (of course it is right on the flight path for Glasgow Airport) while others were terrified of any kind of rubble, industrial dust or whatever.

Clydebank is still the Asbestos capital of Europe.

The blitz program had me thinking again about Kilbowie Kelt who used to post on here, Maurice was evacuated after the blitz heading over to Donegal I think, he came to visit me when I was in the Jubilee a few years ago and I tried to track him down last month when I was in Clydebank but couldn’t find the pub , not sure if it was station or central bar, unfortunately I found neither and returned home wondering how our friend Kilbowie Kelt( Maurice)was doing

  17. Just watched the documentary on the Clydebank Blitz, something I have heard very little about although I was vaguely aware of it, but, in no way aware of how bad the bombing was, the suffering ,deaths and destruction that took place, anyone who hasn’t seen it it is well worth watching.

Having been to the Golden Jubilee a couple of times with relatives what stood on that ground prior to the construction of the hospital?

Aye,I noticed that bit too. Again,I put it down to being badly expressed.

JIMBOB clearly doesn’t understand how or why people become homeless, that’s my opinion. He’s not to be criticised for that,I didn’t know of homeless people when I was growing up. It only started to bite in the early-to-mid 80s,and certainly not at the level it is now.

IMO,JIMBOB is just asking why there is a homeless problem, because it didn’t exist way back when.

Btw,I’ve mentioned this before, but in Michael Caine’s autobiography,he says that he came back to live in the UK because Thatcher had finally got the country back on its feet.

The Golden Jubilee stands on the site of what was Beardmore’s shipyard which stretched to 100 acres.

Later the site closed down and became The Royal Ordinance Factory Clydebank.

My older brother sent me a text after I posted about Turners correcting me that it actually closed in 70 but as he pointed out, the closure of Turners probably saved a good number of lives in Clydebank and the surrounding area. Like you, he is 100% convinced that the government knew the deadly impact of asbestos even pre-war but let it go.

My father died fairly young g and had been ill for a long time. Although asbestos related disease wasn’t what eventually killed him I am certain it was a contributing factor!

I’m sure there is a good chance our families paths may very well have crossed in the past!

Useful and widely used mineral, asbestos. Despite its use being effectively prohibited for decades, people are still dying from its effects.

Nearly as many die from it-even now-as die on the roads.

Widely used in the railway industry,so Swindon got a fair bit of it. I expect that Springburn did too.

But hey you can’t change a leopard’s spots.

Not winning in 10 games at Celtic Park,is not what I would call,A setback. You can try and cover it up any way you like, but there are far too many players who cannot cut it at this level.Too many chances to redeem themselves, and have not taken them.To carry on with the same guys is madness, and they wont get us further than the 1st round of the EL knockouts.Radical changes needed.
