Stunning charity effort by Celtic fans

936

A big well done to everyone who participated in the efforts to send Vanessa Riddle to Philadelphia for crucial medical treatment.  The £500k required was raised yesterday.

Brogan Rogan’ brought the issue to the blog and Taggsybhoy arranged the CQN Music Quiz earlier this month, our first formal activity for Vanessa.  Penfold gave us a signed Celtic top at the quiz which raised an incredible £5000 on eBay (plus gift aid) from a Celtic fan who, quite simply, gets what following this club is all about.

Not only did he pay £5000 but he told us to keep the shirt and use it again!  We then raffled the shirt on eBay and raised almost £1400.  You are all part of an incredible story by an incredible support.

The draw for the signed shirt took place at Uefa headquarters in Nyon, you can watch the video of below and find out if you won.

Our thanks again to Andrew in Belfast for his tireless help with the site this week.  The new ‘whyte’ template is in place and we’ll continue to restore functionality.

  2. Gerry on Sky Sports, the Administrators believe they have found money that should be with Rangers, it may be in the client account held for our Hero by Colliers Bristow? Also no announcements on redundancies today, you’ll notice he said no announcements, not that there will be no redundancies.

    Good Morning,

There is far FAR too many plaudits coming my way over this.

There is no doubt that the Celtic support played a huge role in achieving this target– across all forums and boards– Kerrydale Street, Mailey’s Bhoys, The Rhebel Rhebels, Beyond the Waves, Celtic Network, Not the View and so many many others.

Other football fans and players contributed too and a special mention should go to the “bluenose” who wore the Celtic strip for 24 hours and even went to Celtic Park for a Photoshoot……….. if only………… well perhaps another day.

Yesterday I was contacted by someone who donated £10,000– a follower of this forum, and a look through the donations page shows loads of donations by CQN’ers. Have a read at the donations pages… talk about making you feel humble. There are some really good folk in this world!

Without the Celtic element, Vanessa would still be looking for funds, and things Celtic have been a really significant part of that campaign. That includes those who work within the building at Kerrydale Street, the players, fans, fans’ wives and husbands, kids, neighbours, employees, employers.. and yes even the sports journalists who chipped in.

People have collected in pubs, classes, schools,Gym’s, hairdressers, churches and God know where else– I could name loads but I would be here all day.

Celtic Football Club has always been about delivering hope.. even when things appear at their darkest and bleakest. £500k appears an awful lot of money but when you consider the sheer numbers of Celtic fans, what those fans stand for and believe in, what their ethos is and what their history stands for and is built on then in all truth… what was to be afraid of our to doubt?

It is a fantastic effort, a remarkable result, but it leaves me more convinced than ever that the Celtic support can achieve astounding things and reach remarkable targets if asked, gently pushed (? lol) and just plain called upon.

“Vanessa” set out from a standing start– something else which could be wound up and implemented from a long way out with a feel good factor would blow the socks away. The idea of the Green Mile still makes my head reel with possibilities.. you could dominate media coverage like nothing has before. You could take the interest in the club to untold levels in my view, and knock the current biggest charity event in the world into a cocked hat and then some.

That is perhaps for another day.. although just maybe it is being worked on ;-o).

Today, “Thankyou” will never suffice, but it is a decent start. The praise– well that should really go to oh so many others rather than me.. I am just a bozo with a keyboard. Others really put themselves out.. none more so than Taggsy and family.. and others gave relentlessly in terms of time, effort, ideas and money.

Most of all.. the praise should go to the Riddle family whose ongoing journey we can only follow from a distance with prayers, good will and.. yes… Hope. But that is what we are all about.

There are others who are raising money for children with this same disease. I understand that some have watched in awe at the speed with which Vanessa hit the target. Not surprisingly she was named fundraser of the month for the one full month that it took. Others are not Celtic fans though– maybe they should be– because it clearly makes a difference.

Hopefuly, at some point in the future, we can all share in what will hopefully an old Joke by then. I look forward to seeing Tony Hamilton announce the half time draw one day and say:

    ” Ok Bhoys and Ghirls… here is a riddle… she’s called Vanessa!”

    Until next time……

    Brogan

The amount of money in the Colliers Bristow client account may have been paid in VAT according to Gerry, that’s likely don’t you think.

more likely to have gone in fees to the Whyte Knight and his cronies, do they really think he hasn’t being paying himself for his good work

There is little doubt that it was an inspired piece of thinking to mobilise donations through your connections on this, and I expect, other Celtic-related sites.

That is a mark of your ability to carry out your day-job,I expect!

But I have mentioned before that I think we are making a cross for our own backs by claiming it as a Celtic thing. The reason being that we run the risk of alienating other people who donated simply because, like the rest of us,they were touched by Vanessa’s plight.

I congratulate you on pointing this out,and I congratulate you for your efforts.

It’s a fantastic achievement to have on your CV,and an even better one to have in the ledger at The End of The Day!

    Well done,one and all.
